Tog, I used to be in the all the time and the kids knew But know I am proud to say I am on day 19 without any cope. Most coaches I have worked with never figured they would see the day I could quit for more then 48 hours until the stuff had killed me.

when I was coaching college ball I had a cope in 24/7, but when I made the switch to coach at the high school level took the leap of faith and quit cold turkey. 50 pounds later, I am still tobacco free.

the school I worked at had a tabacco free policy, this included all staff members.
if you smoked, you had to leave the campus or do it on your time at home.
i personally do not think coaches should smoke, drink or be overweight. sets a bad example for the kids.

Want to contract cancer of the mouth? Keep on dipping and chewing! Want to contract lung cancer, keep on smoking! Want a glass of plain old water to taste like a gourmets delight? Quit taking tobacco into your mouth in any form! When your taste buds get all that corrosion off of them, and you remember how good things used to taste and find that they do once again, you'll gain weight if your not careful sure enough! Just don't let it happen, have more self discipline than that. Just a suggestion as always. If you ever see a lung cancer in a jar that has been removed from a patient, believe you me it is not worth it!

Just don't let it happen, have more self discipline than that. Just a suggestion as always. If you ever see a lung cancer in a jar that has been removed from a patient, believe you me it is not worth it! Coach Easton my father died of lung cancer. I can attest to what coach easton is saying. not a very nice sight. my dad smoked from the time he was 16 tell he was 70, when the doctor put him on oxygen. he died 2 yrs later. he worked every day up until 3 months before his death. one day I watched him cough up blood from his lungs. the doctor told he had less then 30 days to live. he was right. my mother just died of cancer. they married when she was 20. she died at age 69. cancer got her her as well. 40+years of inhaling smoke. I was exposed to my dad smoking for 20 plus years, I contracted cancer at age 25. smoking will kill you period end of story. now I respect your right to do what ever you choose to your body but think of this, I am 38 and I have no parents left. my dad died at 72 and my mom just recently at 69. if you have kids think about it, no more birthdays, holidays, family get togethers. is it really worth it? my grandfather on my dads side lived to be 90, his brother 87, his other brother 80. if you died before 80 in my grandfathers family it was do to a farming or sawmill accident. none of them smoked.

i tried to keep my mouth shut on this deal, but i can't any longer.
you guys are all certainly entitled to your opinions. but you have no place preaching or acting like your better than me or anyone else. do you all really think that we don't know its bad for us? don't presume to tell me or anyone else what to do on my own time or with my life.
i'll do what the f i want, when the f i want and you got no business telling me otherwise. i am grown and breaking no laws, governmental or moral. i am sick to death of holier than thou, high and mighties telling everyone what to do all the time. take care of you and leave everyone else alone.
the fact that i drink, dip, cuss and generally have a good time with my life doesn't make me a bad person or coach.
to each his own and i'll stay outta your kitchen if you stay outta mine.
I am the Peg and i don't really care who cares.

Peg, Does your campus have an anti-tobbacco policy? If it does and you do it on campus you are breaking rules. That is what I referred to. If you do it on your own time, you can do what you want. I do feel that players do model what they see... If you do what you want, I would expect to see them doing what they want.

people are the sum total of the choice they make.
If people want to smoke, then fine, but do not then on your death bed get some trial lawyer to bring a lawsuite on your behalf because you are going to die as a result of years of tobacco use.
it says right on the packing this product will kill you.
cancer survival rates for lung cancer are 25% make it 5 years. that means 75% die from long cancer. 25% make is 5 yrs and about half the 25% make it 10 yrs.
what you do in your private life does effect your on the job performance studies have shown.
peg, I hope you do not have any children. I would hate for them to lose you as a father over a silly habbit.

my point is simply this: why is everyone in this damn profession so f*cking self righteous? (oh no did i offend you with my foul language?)
"judge not lest ye be judged" yes, i'm certain i read that somewhere.
i am sick of all these people talking about morality and role modleing when no one is perfect. i will cast no stones because #1 i am far from perect and #2 i don't give a sh*t what you do at the casa or out with the boys.

Oh yeah I have beer on tap in the locker room! PLayer of the game has to do a keg stand! PEG, I agree with you man, I mean I feel we can all do whatever we want. I Personally don't care about cancer, I am way too macho to be affected by anything like that! Gotta relax though man! Life is too short to worry about other people's POV. BTW I have no idea what coach that is in your pictures...but the one on the left has a can in his pocket.

Thank goodness for cope pouches, they save (the kids) lives. You cant tell because they are so small and you don't have to spit. And it can't get all over your teeth.

i used to dip, but stopped. it's expensive and I got a couple of sores in my mouth. that made me quit real quick. that was abotu 18 months ago. I've had one dip since then. Anyway, most people gain weight, i've actually lost 50 pounds or so. my dad went through some bad stuff that I don't want to deal with. this is all my choice. why, b/c I want to. As for the kids knowing I dipped, yeah some did. Only did it once around them though. Long story short.... all things in moderation. I see as more of a health issue. that's why I quit dipping, quit eating like crap and started running. anyway, that and $0.50 might buy you a coke.

I don't smoke or chew, but I do eat an awful lot of jelly donuts. Usually not at practice, though. I would imagine that it would be pretty tough to coach while walking around with a mouth full of sugary goodness! By the way, I hate it when I'm talking to a coach up in the box and I can't understand him because he's eating the goodies the AD lays out for the media guys.

Kudos to those of you who have quit. Addictions are hard to overcome.
Questions I would like to add.... for those of you that do chew, do you hide it from your wife/gf? Do they nag you about your habit?

Yes, smoke cigars and cigarrettes(usually not at the same time) and can go thru a pack of Levi Garrett easy, during the course of a game. Drink about 12-15 cups of coffee a day and try not to cuss too damn much! But for some strange reason, I have lost my desire to drink?? Anything I do or say, I would certainly do in front of the team and not sneak around! If any ask me about smoking or drinking, I will tell them the truth, I didnt have any bad habits till my sports playing career was over and advise them to do the same.
