But who's odds and statistics? It would seem that this would be a better analysis if taken only from his own stats, rather than from all teams, college or NFL.

What was that 2014 change? wasn't that the no more than 6 on each side of the kicker? What did that have to do with huddling and faking the onside?

State championship game. Up by 3. 4 minutes remaining. 4th and 30. From your own 20 yard line.
If he's not punting, he's fired. He just doesn't know it yet.

Not sure what stats he's looking at. You see this quoted sometimes from NFL stats or FBS schools. The conventional=acceptable vs. unconventional=unacceptable thing is huge here. People in SEC country still make fun of Hal Mumme a and look down on him, even though he's been one of the most influential coaches in the last 50 years. You tell people you're running West Virginia's offense and you're cool. Tell them you're running Mumme's offense from UK and they look at you cross-eyed. They just remember him as being so unconventional, especially in terms of not punting and kicking inside, that he's considered a fool. The coach from the OP has a ton of talent at his disposal. He was Gus Malzahn's successor, IIRC, so he not only came into a great program, but also came into a program that was conditioned to accept doing things differently and has been very successful with it. Most of us don't have that. Still, I've coached on teams who were lucky to get the punt past the LOS at times and usually only got off 20-yard punts, at best. If you're only walking away with 15 yards net on punts, it makes sense to take more shots. I completely buy the concept of always attempt some version of an onside kick. 1-Coaching up coverage for kick off is a PITA but necessary if you are kicking deep & the ball doesn’t go into the EZ. 2-Quite often the 1-2 of the guys back deep can be the fastest guys on the field. Kick off is the one place you can make sure they don’t touch the ball via squib or onside with onside giving you a chance to recover the ball in exchange for about 10 yards if field position. 3-To make a kick off coverage team legitimate at many smaller schools it needs to include starters and running 15-20 yards with a shot at the ball on a 3-4 second play takes less energy than running further downfield to a ball that is changing directions for 5+ seconds. 4-Sometimes your kick coverage just sucks for a variety of reasons. Why continue to do it when you regularly let the other team get back to mid field with opportunities to score? Take a chance at getting the ball back! 5-Forces opponents to waste practice time preparing for something different especially of your kicker(s) can execute a few different types of directional onside kicks or drop it into dead spots while the other 10 guys on the kick off team are just doing the same thing of basically run to recover the ball. Punting meanwhile is something I’d never walk away from completely. Some nights it has been the best way to move the ball. Additionally there are certain spots where a punt just makes so much more sense (end of half or end of game backed up deep in your own territory or really anywhere before the 50 & especially with a lead).

I'm from the state(my pic is actually in their stadium) and PA has many advantages that go into being successful with these "gimmicks." 1) year in year out they have great talent. they are a private school so i'm sure you guys know the advantage to that 2) Their conference is terrible! Seriously though it's one of the worst in the state. 3) They have a feeder system that most in the country don't have. Some rich guy has a sports complex that would rival any youth program in the country as far as facilities go and they start on his stuff real early. I had the opportunity to watch their semi-final game last year against Morrilton and I feel like they lost the game because of not punting. He gave a very good team field position inside the +30 twice which resulted in 2 TD's and threw a pic on a 4th down that got ran back into their territory that also resulted in a TD. Good for Morrilton!
