rsmith627, with all the different colors people are sticking on "alternate" jerseys nowadays, does anyone even care about school colors anymore? It wouldn't surprise me to find out there's some school out there whose colors are say, blue and silver, but they have red and white "alternate" uniforms they wear at every home game. We are navy blue and dark green. We have switched that green to a lime green, seahawks style look instead. Hate it because it isn't a school color. It does look pretty cool though. Got the players and the entire school excited and talking about our program though, so mission accomplished I guess, which harkens back to the OP.

Colleges should be forced to take all that alternative uniform money and give it to their home state high schools that can barely afford to buy one set of jerseys. Just sayin'.

I assume that we should pass along Congrats to Nike & University of Oregon, etc. Their marketing ploy has been a huge success.
Even though many schools can not truly afford to do this...they feel compelled to do so in order to keep up with those few schools that can actually afford to do so.
This, along with the concussion issue, makes me wonder how much longer high school football will last.

School I was at a few years back had SEVEN hats for the baseball team that finished fourth in league.

So that you can have a different jersey for each one of your girlfriends to wear.

So that you can have a different jersey for each one of your girlfriends to wear. This is actually the best answer on here. I now support alternate unis.

OK...we are looking a another jersey...but only because we wear head to toe black and our jersey is heavy as all get out. So we are looking for a belt length home jersey that isn't 10 pounds with no ventilation.
But as soon as it hits October we will want hose heavy suckers cause it starts to get a bit chilly.

Ive never seen coaching fundamemtals, lifting, and working on teamwork get the ENTIRE school excited about football and talking about it. Now those things you mentioned will help you win. Winning will create a buzz around the school, but the student body is a bunch of teenagers. All the jazz like brand new uniforms, field turf, etc is what gets the students and the average teacher talking about the team. Eventually, if the team is bad, then the the uniform mystique will wear off. Our uni's are nice and new, but we are very old school and have a lot of tradition. We are exactly the same as Penn State. We have had the same look forever. So old that it's just a coincidence we have the same uni's as PSU. I probably would never want to change it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using proboards

Winning will create more "buzz" than any colored jersey ever will.

Two alternate home jerseys? Shoot... We have a black, grey, gold, white, green (memorial to a staff member who died last year), and pink breast cancer awareness jerseys to go along with black, gold, white, and grey pants as well as black and white helmets. Why do we do it? Because we have the money to spend and kids LOVE it.

Why do we do it? Because we have the money to spend and kids LOVE it. If you have the money, spend it any way that you want. The question is for programs that don't have spare cash. If you have other football needs are alternative unis a wise choice? Does it make sense to spend money on a flashy new set of jersies than on something like HUDL or an end zone camera? My answer would be a definitive maybe. If you're taking over a down program, new unis can send a message that the new staff means a fresh start. If you're in an open enrollment district and have to compete to keep players, a new set of unis may convince some kids that they don't need to transfer. Sure, winning is more important than looking flashy but you need players to win.

It's fun, it's trendy, and it keeps your kids excited and attracts other ones to your program. If you have the money and it's your thing, go for it. If not, or your program isn't where it needs to be in regards to facilities, equipment, etc., your money is probably better spent in those areas.
At the end of the day, it's subjective. Personally, I think it's exciting for all involved and if money isn't the issue and not causing you to suffer elsewhere, it's a good thing.

Our varsity has home, away, and two sets of alternate jerseys. I don't get the decision to get them. Can someone sell me on the benefits of these versus something like an end zone camera? ONE OF OUR ASSISTANT COACHES TOLD THE BOYS IF THEY WON THE SECTION TITLE (CA) HE WOULD BUY THE PROGRAM AN ALTERNATE UNIFORM...HE HAS MONEY LIKE THAT I GUESS...

We bought new pants this year so we can combo the new white pants and the old black pants with both out white and black jerseys. Gives us 4 different looks. The kids loved it. But i do agree the money could be used on other stuff. In our case we receive money that can only be used for uniforms which we get in a four year cycle. We had enough jerseys so we opted for the mini Oregon look!

It's a great boost to a program. After year around lifting, spring, summer practices, the grind of the year it's a boost to the kids.
I do t let our kids wear flashy stuff on their own we wear basically everything as a team. We got black uniforms two years ago. We don't wear them often we rotate but it's a thing our kids look forward to.
I love the grays I just need more $$.
