We practice about 2hrs & 45 mins. That's with FLEX and breaks through out. I know of some teams that will practice in upwards of 4 hours, even more.
What most effective?

2-2 1/2 max. I think from experience after about that long you loose kids. 4 hours? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ? Thats a bit extreme would hate to play on that team

Personally I don't think you should ever practice over 2 1/2 hours. The kids lose focus and you just waste your time. I've done it before and I don't ever want to do it again. The kids hated it, I hated it and we didn't get any better. We started getting better when we focused on doing things right the first time and cutting back our practice time greatly. If you dangle that carrot in front of the kids of focusing on practice and doing it right the first time they will take it and you will get more accomplished. Focus, quick pace and attention are the keys to getting this done.

Usually about 2 hr 45 minutes counting everything, stretch, special teams, conditioning. Early in the season we may run over a few minutes and later in the year and in the playoffs may cut back some.

We try to start by 3:50 and end by 6:00, but usually we wrap up around 6:15. Our kids have had to walk a few blocks from the school to the practice field in the past, but we have two brand new practice fields behind the high school starting next fall. That should allow us to start at 3:45 and be done by 6:00.
I feel that we aren't going to get better after two and a half hours, so we might as well wrap it up. Also, we try to shorten practices by 10-15 minutes later in the season.

We spend about 2:30 on practice. This includes film and flex daily. Might me a little longer early and shorter late in the season.

We go two hours, any more and you seem to start losing the attention of some of the players.

Monday, Tuesday on field 3 - 6:15 Wed - 2:45 Thurs- 1 hour. It's a cliche that you lose them after 3 hours. It depends on who is coaching and what you are doing. We used to go 3.5 always M-W and went 39-2-1 doing that. But you better be intense and not standing around or you will lose them.

BTW We don't stretch and never have. We spend 5 minutes on rope ladders at the start. We haven't had a hamstring pull in 2 years.

Old school here, we are going to get 2 and 1/2 hours of good practice in, even if it takes us 6 hours to do it.
We are usually between 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours M-T, 2 1/2 on Wednesday (church night) and 2 on Thursday.
Seems to be plenty for us.

Under our old hc we have about 3 hours practices, from about 5:30-8:30. Under our new hc we will probably go from 4-6:30 or so.

I practice in intervals no longer than 15 minutes.....keep things moving! 10 individual, 5 jet sweep period, 5 punt team, high intensity, quick reps.......the talking and explaining needs to be done off the field, before practice especially later in the season.........I know a guy who runs 2 hours of offensive scrimmage every practice.....talk about losing interest

I hate it when people say you are gonna lose the kids if you go so long. I hear it about film time and about practice time. If you got stuff to do, you got to get it done. I think some people use this as an excuse to get home earlier.

our practices get shorter as the season progresses. start out about 2:45 total...finish around 2:15 OR even 2:10.

I went to this when a bunch of parents thought every kid should play. so we practiced long hrs. parents just got used to it. I also get no spring or summer practice so I have to get it done during the season. after the half way point I cut 1hr off practice. at the 3/4 mark i cut 30 min off.

I'm wondering if the guys who have longer practices, like myself, don't platoon. We play guys both ways so all of our offensive heavy lifting has to be done on Tuesday. Defense is Wednesday.

for me it is special teams. most people do not devote 60 minutes daily and practice on the weekend to special teams.
i believe special teams win games. it is the only time where the ball is changing hands and a big play can happen.
my philosophy is to make special teams a weapon. most teams take the punt for granted. most teams do not fake punts and most teams do not try and block punts. most just go through the motions. better work on your punt protection vs us or you might get a blocked punt. so you need to take time from what you do to devote extra time. or better worry about the 10 different kickoff returns, my favorite is ladderal pass to the otherside of the field. run right, throw left. go this one from bobby bowden.

You'll probably think we're crazy but here's what we do. We go 3.5 hours. Kick first 15 min. After team offense which is about 60 plays we go defense. While we are on defense I take the oline ( I'm HC ) and we work oline stuff for about 20-25 min. Then we go inside the football building, take off shoulder pads, and watch that day's offense shot from a 35' high rear view camera. We go over defense, what calls should have been, technique etc. That takes about a 1/2 hour. Then when defense is done, we go back out and run conditioning. We started doing that 3 years ago and it has helped our off. line tremendously. We platoon the line but not the backs.

Anywhere from 2 h 15 min to 2 h 45 min. Anything longer and they lose focus. The best practices, in my opinion, are those with quick efficient transitioning.
