You can get low and hit with your chest. I have never said there won't be any contact with the mask. Just not initiate the contact with head (top, crown or forehead)! There is a big difference!

Again - if there wasn't incidental or accidental contact with any part of head, Football players wouldn't need helmets or face masks.
The issues are teaching illegal contact, not penalizing it, and properly treating head injuries when they occur.
And also for coaches publicizing our efforts to reduce such injuries as much as possible.

I understand that. But, people are saying that making any contact with the head (including face mask) is giving more people autism than vaccinations.

I have not heard that. I have heard that repeated blows with the forehead can lead to more damage than concussions. That is very believable to me.

I hadn't heard that either. Wouldn't be hard for anything to cause more autism that vaccinations, though, since that study turned out to be bogus.

NFL players might want to quit "head butting" each other to get "fired up" before games or to celebrate big plays.
I literally cringe whenever I see MNF opening where they have two teams' helmets smashing into each other and exploding.
Nice message to be sending these days.

fantom - That is a TERRIFIC article...thanks for posting! Unfortunately, it doesn't jive with what many in the media want the public to believe about a long NFL career being a potential death sentence. that's probably why I haven't see anything anywhere about that CDC study.

Great piece - thanks for sharing it. It is a fair and balanced look at the issues, which is why it won't get much play. The fact that former NFLers actually do better than the general public when it comes to premature death? Hey, that doesn't sell newspapers...

I watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Their Death Montage went on and on and very few died of old age. Since then two more former stars have died in their 40's. THAT'S a business that somebody needs to look into. Great piece - thanks for sharing it. It is a fair and balanced look at the issues, which is why it won't get much play. I've read most of the posts on here and most of them have some awesome information and studies but I think we need to be focusing on what are we going to be telling the parents of our athletes!
Look at the last 2 NFL guys who shot themselves(Duerson/Seau). Graduated high school in about 1980 and 1986 respectively I believe. Compare the helmet technology from those days to what it is today. Even compare the helmet technology from when they played college and professionally throughout their career. A lot has changed!
I don't know when IMPACT testing came about for sure, but now that we do it, and many other schools do it, it gives us another medical baseline to go off of for a kids safety to play the game of football. I was in high school pads 10 years ago and the best diagnosis of ability to play after a concussion then was when was your last head ache.
We as coaches need to focus on the NOW and the FUTURE of the game and technology that the kids are able to play in, rather than the past and what their fathers played the game in. My Sr. year we got the new Revolution helmets for the first time. That was a huge step in protection of the head. Now schutt uses technology put into helmets that pilots use in the air force (i believe there was a special done by ESPN on Deshaun Jackson a couple years ago on his helmet). The safety and technology of protection is going in the right direction.
I'm hoping over the next few years we don't see the game fade away or change for the negative. Instead, i'm hoping that we see the technology of protection for the game continue to improve drastically. Hopefully it's affordable for us H.S. coaches!

I believe it will get better, before it gets any worse. Today it's Less practices, less contact, fines will turn into suspensions eventually, certain coaches will change the technique they teach. The more info provided will in turn have an some effect on youth tackle football numbers.

I see that the NFL is looking to get the pads back on the players...great first step...next having mouth pieces being required would also be huge It is all about perception
