Just wondering if any of you out there have a name for your offense or defense (Fun and Gun, Blackshirts, etc.)? I know it's popular in the college ranks, but you don't hear about it much in high school. But, that could be becuase they're not as publicized.
So, who uses them? Do you think they help? And if you were going to use a name (but don't right now) what would it be?

we've discussed this very issue in the coaches office here recently. looking more along the lines of getting our kids excited about what we are doing. give them something catchy to latch onto that might help in wanting to make the whole thing better. mainly a publicity stunt within our own locker room but we are willing to try anything once.
have not come up with any names thus far, though........

That's where I'm coming from on this. I wonder if it would help to fire kids up. I remember when my brother played in high school, his D-coord started calling the defense the Dawg Pound. As the team improved (to eventual state champs) the whole community latched on to the Dawg Pound. It was a little crazy.

that could very well happen. i think that is the reason most coaches/teams employ some type of nickname. at the college level it gets them exposure - which gets them players. at the high school level it could get more community involvement and more player ownership.....we're going to start it when spring ball starts, just got to find a name....
"Red Spread" --- sounds like something you put on a sandwich.....or worse, lol
"Code Red Offense" -- sounds too much like a defensive name
i'm not an advertising guy so trying to figure out a unique name is next to impossible for me. don't want to go with the ones already in use....i.e. "fast break"..."fun n gun"....etc.

Huey give us your mascot, school colors and style of offense and I'm your you'd get some help.
I've been toosing one around for my team (the Wildcats). If I do grow a pair and decide to run the spread offense, I'm thinking about calling it: WILDFIRE. What do you think?

yeah...we've tried and tried to come up with something the kids could 'rally' around. We do have Black practice jersey for the defensive players...but nothing as a source of the Blackshirts...
We do have a rallying cry though, I guess. It was always "Nasty" - and maybe that's just my personality, but from Frosh - Varsity, my time with the defense has always been centered on playing efficiently but with the whole intent of getting "caveman" on the offense, ie "Nasty".
The players would typically break a defensive huddle with a "Nasty" call. BTW- we are NOT a 'dirty' team, either.

mascot: tigers colors: red & white offense: multiple one-back (we use several different personnel packages: 2-back/1 TE; 2-back/3WR; 1-back/3 WR [base]; 1-back/4 WR; Ace) and are no-huddle majority of time. utilize shifts & motion when in our 'huddle mode'

Our defense is named "BIG NASTY". In our weight room we have a 4x8 wall painted white with Nasty Wall painted on it. Whenever a kid gets a "snot bubble" hit they get to sign the nasty wall. I think it help our kids physicallity. They are always looking for nasty wall hits and wanting to sign the wall.

Being and Aggie fan i still prefer: The Wrecking Crew
I use this once my defenses start to develop an attitude that they bring to the field, unfortunatley this year was not one fo those teams.

In college, the kickoff team and punt return team wore Dark green Scrimmage hats. They were labeled the "Green Berets", only the best tacklers got on this team. Starters on both sides of the ball competed hard to be on these teams. It was sold to the players as being the "elite players". Very effective, everybody on the team wanted to be on them, special teams practices were always spirited and not treated like something inbetween O and D.

You could use the Michael Vick method of coming up with a name.
The Ron Mexico Team The George Kazakhstan Offense
How about
Air Tigers THE RED ZONE OFFENSE or THE TIGER ZONE (since you run zone, and then you can call the red zone the "TIger Zone" and emphasize the fact that when you get down there you will score) that kind of thing?

I refer to our defense as "The Dark Side". And this year on the highlight tape we will include the Imperial March from Star Wars during a short segment of the defensive highlights.

The Gulf Storm Offense - 1 back - 3WR - 1TE sets but actually with 2 back personel. The quicker back playing the flanker with lots of motion. The stronger back (Thunder) is our featured back.
X and Z (our fastest player plays the Slot) are in twins set to one side and W and Y (TE) to the other side. We will motion either W or Z to or across the formation to trips or Y-Trips as well as Jets/Fly sweeps. We also motion both back to a two back I-Form set.
Our Running back runs are our Thunder runs and the runs to Z and W are our Lightning runs.
I like the matchups with our fastest guy in the slot being covered by Safety or LB. Plus if we motion Z across to a Y-Trips and the rotate over we get one-on-one with X, our best receiver.

Your right ogie thats exactly where it comes from, and yes I am a child of the eightys hair bands and proid of it! Holla Gotta love it. Several years ago, my hockey drill/systems playbook went missing, it shows up a week later with a custom airbrushed print of Ozzy's "Diary of a Madman" album cover on it. Then the kids started stealing the keys to my truck to find pregame warmup music from my hair band CD case. Lynch Mob was one of their favorites.

I get a lot of the same grief Ogie from our kids with the hair bands music. I told them I'm going to make our hi-light tape this year with ol' school 80's music. I don't think they were to found of that idea. How can you listen to music that doesn't swear?

My take on is you never heard Lawerence Welk from the old days on them, and no Fitty Cent is going on it.
