The officiating in the NFL is terrible. Some of it is the rules as they are (RTP, defenseless receivers), but others are how they are enforced (offensive PI, illegal contact). There's no consistency.
In one of the games (I think the Colts/Jets) there was an overthrow on some a deep ball. The corner had great coverage, locked on the WR's top shoulder, facing the ball, going stride for stride. The receiver pushed the corner down to prevent the pick on the over throw.
If the roles are reversed, that's PI every time. It might have been uncatchable, but it was close enough that it would be called. However, since it was the offense committing the penalty it was let go.
I just hate how the NFL is using rules to manufacture a style of play. It really does take the game away from the teams playing.

Again, he shouldn't have thrown the pass that was intercepted (but in moments of stress or high anxiety, athletes fall bnack on what they trust most - in Favre's case, his arm).
But remember this: 40-year old guy who a few minutes before was prostrate on trainer's table with injured ankle hobbles back on field to run 2-minute offense - is going to RUN for 1st Down on 3rd and Long?

Turnovers cost the game!! But, the NFL rules dont come down to a coin flip..it comes down to defense and special teams! Can you stop the other team from scoring! Can you stop them from getting good field goal position...if you can, you are in good shape. Its not as if the offense gets the ball at the 25!

As a side note (to the thread in general, bot to any specific individual) the next time you complain about fans second-guessing your coaching keep this thread in mind.

He didn't need a first down, it was 3rd and 15, he just needed to get the ball to the 35 or maybe the 30. Then there is a shot at the field goal. With the pick it didn't matter. no field goal attempt means no shot. His ankle was already full of xylocaine and he wouldn't feel a thing either way. He had no reason to through the ball there and hadn't done it all year. I have been a Favre fan for so many years it hurts to see him do something to make all the talking heads right. Anything but that!!!!
He just can't help himself and I don't think he will quit. Look fot one more year!!!!!!

For another point of view

Thoughts:
(1) Vikings were stupid to begin with to "play for" a 50 yard field goal. NFL coaches (and fans) act like such field goals are automatic. They had first down on the 33 or so and basically began playing for it.
(2) Then the 12 men penalty happened, which was ridiculous but it happens -- I guess. And then Favre tried to use their last timeout. Imagine if they had used the timeout then had the clock expire before they got the field goal off, Les Miles style.
(3) Favre's INT was bad. Not much else to say.
(4) NFL overtime *is* unfair. This is not to say that the Saints were "given" the game, just that the NFL system is silly. From an analytical point of view, it is ridiculous that over a third of the time the game ends without the other team touching the ball, and the fact that the team that wins the toss has *any* advantage at all (it is closer to 60%), is silly when the game is -- by definition -- fairly even and then you toss a coin. There's a lot of better systems, but a simple one would be to say first team to six wins.
From a cosmetic standpoint, I was rooting for the Saints but I thought it was silly that the game could end without Favre touching the ball again. Remember Brees had the ball twice in the last few minutes and couldn't do anything with it (before and after the Favre INT).

I agree. I hate that the outcome of a game is dependent on a coin toss...christ they might as well do paper-rock-scissors to add a little bit of skill/strategy to it! This is the 4th conference championship game to be decided in overtime. This is the 1st one where the team that won the toss won the game....

I am not sure how the game ended 'without the ball in Favre's hands' is not true. The game DID end with Favre throwing an INT. Was he supposed to get a mulligan?
I would imagine the NFL's OT rules are so because they want to ensure finality, timeliness (on a Sunday evening-see TV influence), as well as the pressure to score points (NOW!) before regulation ends (because you know that you may not have a 'second wind/life' in OT).
Also, it isn't like points are automatic in the NFL OT. A team still has to drive 45-80 yards to get those points. Its not like they start in scoring position as in NCAA rules.
The changing of NFL OT talk is purely "timely" sports writer drivel that haven't looked at the data.

My idea to change the OT rule...is just have a 5th quarter..exactly like the 4th. 2:00 minute warning, 3 TOs, team with most points wins after 15 minutes win.
Still need the coin flip...but at least the O gets a chance

Not a bad idea but OT could be 7.5 minutes. Half a quarter.
