For high school coaches, I was wondering how many coaches you have on your staff and how the responsibilities (positions) are broken down.
We have 11 coaches. Head Coach/OC/QB DC/LB OL DB DL RB WR JV Head Coach JV OC JV DC Kickers/Punters

I have 8 or 9 (depending on whether I find the right guy to fit the 9th spot)
Head Coach (OC/RB/QB) DC (DB's) STC (DL) OL (x 2) LB DB (assistant + Scout Team coach) TE (also works with Qb's during specific periods)
Currently looking for a Strength and Conditioning coach who would also become a position coach as well.

Myself and two paid assistants, I have a few volunteer guys that come and go.
Paid assistant #1 is my right hand man in the school, gets more administrative duties, more supervision of wt room, locker room and that kind of thing. Hes our dline coach and an assistant oline coach.
Paid assistant #2 is my backs and defensive backs coach. he works more with the scout team as hes young and capable to run the offense etc.
vol 1- assistant oline coach, if he was more available hed be the best assistant I have. he also works hard at dline.
vol 2- assistant backfield coach, assistant dbacks too
vol 3- rah rah guy, more of a get on the kids about energy and effort, scout team, run whatever drill we need guy
vol 4- extra set of eyes, helps out more on game days and maybe one or two practices a week he will help with the oline and dline.
Nice staff with no egos to contend with. Loyal and good with the kids.

Coach,
Last year when I was at a school with 2600 students we had 14 for all levels: 8 Varsity - We had our players go one way 2 JV 4 9th grade...
I came to a new school smaller and this year we had 12....
Next year the kids will go both ways so I plan to do the following: 10 together 6 Varsity - 2 JV 2 9th grade
At the varsity level we will have our kids go both ways. The JV and 9t grade sub levels will practice together next year (Basically 9th grade and 10th grade team). We will have around 45 Juniors and seniors on varsity alone.
I have found sometimes when you have TOO many coaches there can be a lot of standing around and down time. The plus was we had plenty of peopel to help with fields, laundry, inventory... All of the grunt work!

So that we're comparing apples to apples may I suggest that we add the level and classification where we coach?
At our AAA (highest in our state) HS we have:
HC/OC/DE DC/OL/DB TE/DT/S&C WR/P,K/ST RB/LB OLB/RB/JV HC QB Assistant DB- Non-teacher who gets to practice late on defensive days but helps a lot by working with CBs on man coverage while I take safeties in run support. Assistant/JV OL Assistant/JV OL Assistant/JV 0L- all are very helpful because they work with OL scout teamers and the varsity OL during ST period. One's the get-back coach and one films. Another helps by talking to the OL while the OL coach (me) calls the defense.
Scout Team- The baseball coach who volunteers but not a full-timer. He does a great job with the scout team.
Assistant RB/JV RB - a college player who's sitting out a semester. He's been very helpful working with the RBs because he speaks their language.
Most are volunteers and all have a role that they perform well. Also most attend Sunday staff meetings.

5A school in Kansas
7 coaches total (grades 9-12)
QB/RB (special teams coordinator and JV OC) OL/LB (varsity OC) DL (JV DC) Head Coach was DC, but didn't coach a position 3 freshmen coaches
Our WR/secondary coach quit during week 4, so from that point onward they either didn't get coach or just got yelled at by other coaches. It's no wonder they got worse as the year went on huh!

3A program in IL. Our enrollment is just under 500 (487, I think) and we had right at 50 players freshmen through senior. All five of us were paid, but we had no volunteers.
HC/OC/QBs/DBs
Assistant #1 (me, I guess, although equal rank with #2)--Varsith OL/DL/Specials
Assistant #2--Varsity RBs/LBs/DC
Assistant #3--JV OL/DL/JV DC
Assistant #4--JV Backs/LBs/DBs/JV OC
Due to only having five coaches, we normally did our drill work freshmen through senior and then divided up for scrimmage and contact drills.

We are a 2A in Texas and have between 60-70 football players. We have 6 high school coaches and 3 Jr. High. That includes our athletic director at the high school and one of the Jr. High coaches knows nothing about football he is the high school basket ball coach.
1- A.D./head coach/DC 2- OC/runs defensive Scout team 3- OL/helps me with scout team/LB 4- DL/QB ; we dont do much indivual on offense and i work with the QB's most of the time 5- WR/DB 6- RB/LB Are commutiy will not let us have volunteer coaches we had 2 but a lot of people complained.
The two coaches that are at the Jr. High have about 45 kids and they are first year coaches.

Not agreeing or disagreeing with the TX rule, but I know most programs in IL would have A LOT of trouble filling staffs if they couldn't go outside the school district. I've been a part of four staffs and right at 50% of the coaches I've worked with have not been school employees.

We have just under 400 kids in the school which puts at us 3A in Minnesota. We have 4 total paid coaches for 9-12 plus 2 volunteers who come two 2-3 practices/week and all games.
We have 4 coaches in our 7-8 program and I am in the process of trying to have one of those positions reassigned to ninth grade.

I'm an Offensive Line coach at a High school with 200-220 total student body. We only have 5 coaches. We all coach up the JV/Varsity. Our entire team roster is about 40-43 kids each season (JV and Varsity together).
Head Coach - who also coaches up DBs/WRs Defensive Coordinator(paid asst)- who coaches up our spurs/dogs whatever you want to call them in 33 Def QB Coach(paid asst) -who also coaches Linebackers Oline Coach (me) (volunteer)- who helps with Defensive Line and Dline Coach(volunteer) - who helps me with Oline
Me and D-line coach get a lil financial help when we run the little kids football camps. Its been a good experience.
