Did anybody see Singletary's interview after his 1st game as HC with the niners?
What are your thoughts. I'd play for him right now even though I know my 48 year old body would get hurt.

I don't have the link but I saw it. He basically said he'd rather have 10 players on the field and take the penalty every play than have a guy on the field who doesn't want to help the team.

I think that it was was great, that he sent him off the field. There are too many pre-madonnas running around out there, especially at the high school level.

I'm sure there will be a link up soon, it was great...he said that TE Vernon Davis was best suited to help the team today if he went in the locker room and took a shower and came back and just watched the game....

Wow, he's too good to be true lol. I don't think i've ever seen a coach tell a player to go take a shower during the game after a dumb penalty like that. Then go in front of the media and be completely honest. WOW...this should be an interesting last half of the season in San Fran.

airraider, thanks for the post. I was wondering what the heck did Davis do to get thrown out. I have two points about this:
Were the actions of Davis grounds for his coach to throw him out a game? Ehhh....probably not. Was Singletary sending a huge message to his team? Most definitely.
However, I will say that Singletary cannot continue to coach like this. You cannot throw your players out of games for boneheaded actions. (depending on the severity of course). Davis' actions did not warrant an in house ejection but I think Mike had to do suhem to show this team he meant business, and I DO understand and agree with Mike's reasons for do so.

Just to add to my prior post. After watching the Mike's press conference I immediately thought to myself, 'Something must have been brewing underneath Mike for a while now about this player', but as an assistant, especially an assistant on the other side of the ball he couldn't express his opinion about Vernon Davis. Now that he's the coach he could let loose on Davis. Deion Sanders said basically the same thing I was thinking.

I don't think he sent him in for the action on the field. It looks to me like the attitude on the sideline, the indifference to his actions hurting the team is why the drastic action was taken. Singletary alluded to that in the post-game conference as well when he talked about the "nonchalant" attitude. This is a problem that can't be tolerated at any level, but one that I think is rampant in the NFL. I think this is one of the "secrets" of Bilicheck and the Patriots. He won't bring in players unless they are sold out to the team ideal, and if one does make it on team that isn't - slips through the cracks so to say - he won't be around very long.
I know its only one game into his tenure at SF, but I've got to believe that if upper-mangement allows Singletary to do things his way, the 49'ers will be contenders sooner rather than later.

He was sent to the showers, because he cares more about himself than the team.
Wow, imagine that. The NFL being played as the game was meant to be played. They might even let it become a "hitting" sport again.
Great stuff, what a coach, borderline homeless drunkard, but good stuff nevertheless.

If you are on the West Coast and follow the 49'ers, Vernon Davis has been a Prima Donna since he arrived. He's a good blocker, but drops MANY passes, and when he catches one, he screams at the sideline to give him the ball more, beats his chest on a 5 yd out route, etc. He's a cancer and a great example of a combine guy, not a football player. Because he looks good in underArmour and ran a fast 40 time, the media loves him. He's a dog!

I think throwing your players under the bus is a no-no unless you seriously consider cutting that player the next day. And even still, that could lead to negative consequences psychologically on the team, cut player or not. With that said though, I agree with Singletary even if he did rip on a player, because his overall message and intent was for the good of the team.

Great job by Coach Singletary. If VD wants to be selfish, he needs to go play a one-on-one sport like tennis or tiddlywinks. You can't tolerate a selfish, nonchalant attitude like that and be successful as a FB Coach.
I love this quote: “The freedom to do your own thing ends when you have obligations and responsibilities. If you want to fail yourself, you can. But you cannot do your own thing if you have responsibilities to team members.” - Lou Holtz

dchoio, As I was watching the encounter on Sportscenter I was secretly hoping that Davis would take a swing that way he could see how a really mad Coach Singleton acts. My money would be on Singleton teaching the young pup a few lessons in humility.

You think busting him in the mouth ever entered Davis' mind? Humility can be a very good motivator, maybe not for Davis, but for everyone else...no one is above the law, that should be common sense, Davis just learned that the hardway. Busting Mike Singletary in the mouth? LOL. Good one.

More coaches at all levels need to take heed of what Singletary did and said. We wouldn't have the primadonnas and all the garbage that goes on at different levels. HS I used to coach at had 2 seniors go to first class on Friday, then skip out of school and come back for last period. They didn't play (which they thought they would) and might have made a difference in the game if they had had put the team first instead of themselves. Both were starters.

It's a breath of fresh air. Thank you Mr. Singletary

It would be funning watching them pick themselves up off the ground and I would just hope a camera would be there. Singletary was a little before my time, but I saw him play a game or two. He is one of the all time greats.

What I liked most about Singletary's actions are that he never threw his player under the bus. He didn't like his actions (and probably his ongoing attitude) and did something about it. He didn't slam the player but he talked about a certain mentality that he is looking for. I'm sure behind the clubhouse door, he is doing much more to shape up the Niners.
He also never talked about his playing days, hall of fame, or super bowl. He just put it out there plain and simple. "I'm from the old school and we're going to do it a certain way."
If that's not sending a clear enough message then he needs to send more players to the showers until he can find what players have a team heartbeat. I hope the Niners front office realize what kind of coach they have here and give him a chance to see what he can do with the people that he wants to bring in next season.

Davis had done the same thing the previous week and blew it off. MS wasn't the HC then, but he sure as he!! is now. I did see him play back in the day, and I, too, would have loved to see Davis take a poke at him. AAAH! Shades of the Da Bears. Good on you Mike Singletary. Put another down.

Does anyone have a link to a video of the on-field activity?
I want to see VD getting thrown off the sidelines...also curious to see what he did too to warrant the penalty.

Saw the highlights on Sportscenter and Coach Singletary deserves a BIG ATTABOY! Young people have to learn that there are consequences for their actions, both good and bad. Many coaches have tried to teach in this style but too many people outside of our sport have become excuse makers and enablers for the poor attitudes and behavior of players. The Al Davis philosophy of JUST WIN BABY will come back to bite you sooner or later if that's all you care about. Obviously Mike cares about winning but winning the right way with the right players and I say AMEN to it. Keep it up.

Very cool what Singltary did. Great former player. Would do the world much more good to be coaching HS instead of the NFL and catch kids early before they get like that. Sadly, that won't play long in the NFL because the primadonna rule the day up there.
