I was on the ugly side of a 96-3 beating this season. As a DC, it was rough to take. Our situation had us, an 11 man team playing 8 men on defense vs an 8 man team. We had an enrollment of 180 to their 70. It was a disaster of a night. I tried, but had no answers for how spread out the field was. 1 missed tackle and they were in space and gone. What made it worse was that we played 11 on 11 on offense so we had no advantage on offense. I don't care which side of the ball you are on, this is a tough issue. Mercy rules hurt both teams, but so do 60+ drubbings. There are good points of emphasis on both sides of the issue. Im not understanding the 8 on defense, but 11 on offense.. Air--Just a guess here. Since defense is reactionary, and predicated on what the OFFENSE does, it seems it would be easier for an 8 man team to simply add 3 on defense, and for an 11 man team to subtract 3 on their defense than it would be to ask the 11 man team to take away 3 offensive players or to ask an 8 man team to ADD 3 on offense in one week. That said, while that solution seems best to play the game, it HARDLY seems fair within the sense of the game. Fewer players = more open space = more offensive opportunities. That doesn't seem terribly fair

I have been on both ends of this situation...I'm proud to say that in all cases the [glow=red,2,300]head coach [/glow]has informed the officials that NOBODY is to be embarrassed...everyone knows what's going on...a good officiating crew is going use the flag...some good & poor spotting techniques, etc. ...a fine ,experienced, officiating crew is going to take care of some of these situations...you cannot ask a 3rd team/ backup kid to take it easy...it's not fair to them....I do not have a problem with a team passing that's up...IF that's what they do (with their substitutes)...A GOOD OFFICIATING CREW IS NOT GOING TO LET THIS HAPPEN

we had the mercy rule last week. we scored 3 defensive td's, blocked two punts that led to td's we were up +40 midway through the 2nd Q. the mercy rule was a blessing, the opposing coach actually thanked us for not running up the score. we won 54-0, with all the points coming in the first half. have to admit, I was proud of our second team keeping the shutout.
