Set goals. Always sandwich a negative with two positives...very tough to do at times. Meet someone new everyday.

1. never run sweep on the goal line......always run north..... 2. on the 2 or closer......sneak til you score..... 3. screamin is for practice.....if you have to scream on friday night then you haven't done your job..... 4. never drink beer while cutting the game field.... 5. best way to keep someone from stealing your whistle? keep a big dip in your mouth....nobody but the dipper likes a whistle that tastes like copenhagen... 6. even on the best of days, carry an extra pair of everything....for you.....even if it doesn't rain, your kids may get you with the cooler...... 7. tape and prewrap can heal any injury......sprains, cuts, dislocations..... 8. don't tell the white hat that you have extra kibbles for his seeing eye dog tonght
that covers it....

College Coach to the Team:
Football is a great game. Have fun.
He said it before the championship game, and he said five years later when we went 5 and 5.

TWO 1.Screw feelings, your not their mommy. 2. Coach your best players. 1. hold them accountable-but have a relationship with them to know what gets the most out of them 2. coach up your middle of the road and worst players ( don't give up on kids) this will get ALL of your players reaching their potential i live by it it everyday

Best pieces of advice I've ever soaked up is to teach the why's, the how's (the techniques), and to develop a relationship with each individual player. 1. never run sweep on the goal line......always run north..... Not to get sidetracked here, but aren't ya supposed to strectch the field horizontally as the field shortens vertically? Of course I guess it depends on your strengths/offense, but that's my philosophy regarding the red zone ('course, I've never been a coach... yet).

When I was a young buck I heard this advice in a football coaching class - directed to all the youngsters going off to high school jobs --
KYPIYP -- keep your Peter in your pants...
just learned this ditty from an first aid teacher -- "If its wet and its not yours - don't touch it"

Your best players are good at what they do and will improve little. Your worst players that get on the field can improve a lot and provide more impact on your record.
Work hard and do your job.
It's not how many hours you work but how efficient you are that matters.

1) Treat everyone fairly. Fairly does not mean equally. 2) Teach What. Teach How. Teach Why. 3) Play performance. Coach potential.

Make sure that everything that you do on the practice field- every drill- is directly related to football. YES! I've significantly changed my practices based on the above. No more conditioning just to do conditioning. Now we run 10 yard sprints, we have our QBs and Cs working on snaps. We don't go on a whistle, we go on our QBs cadence. All players get in their positions respective stance, OLineman fire hard and low and do the duck walk. Before, we ran 20 10 yard sprints on my whistle to finish a practice. "If you keep doing what you've always done, you gonna keep gettin what you've always got." This one always bothered me. Don't we teach repetition and muscle memory? I dunno...it's also like running the WingT for 8 games, going 0-8 and saying "lets change to the spread". Maybe i'm taking it to literal...

I dunno...it's also like running the WingT for 8 games, going 0-8 and saying "lets change to the spread". Maybe i'm taking it to literal... I like this one as use in my "regular" life to. I actually used it today with a player that is struggling in school and is in special ed classes. He started complaining about he did not feel he needs to be in those classes and I asked if he has done anything different to change that, he said no and I said there you go. You could use it on the field to. Like if your guard is not pulling properly or fast enough then dont expect a different outcome if you have done nothing to change this.

Hear ya Wing T 74, Meant it as if you consistently have kids screwing up on assignments come Friday, you have to re-evaluate what you do Mon-Thurs and look at what you're doing as a coach to get your point across and make changes as needed. If you're consitently bad and the kids are consitently screwing up- don't keep doing what you've been doing. On the flip side, if their successful- keep on keeping on.

I don't know if it is advice, but one thing that has stuck with me is "The film does not lie, what you see on film is what you are coaching them to do. If your team is not executing correctly, then you are coaching it ineffectively." Sometimes that is hard to swallow, but it is true!

My very first Varsity "sleep away" camp, at 22 years old. I'm coaching for my former coach, a legendary conservative fundamental football guy who's seen it all and done it all. We're up at 6am for a Special Teams practice. Kick return, and nobody blocks a soul... ME: "Coach, we didn't block anyone! What the hell are these guys doing!?! We just let the cover team run right through us!!! What kind of lazy a$$ $h!t is that? ?" COACH: (deadpan and unemotional, with a steaming cup of coffee in his hand) "Michael, if you don't learn to relax a little bit, you're not going to last long in this career."

"Guys that know their x's and o's are a dime a dozen. Find guys who can teach fundamentals."

More is less and Less is more. Be good at a couple of things or be bad at a lot of things. Don't complicate winning.

Here are some things I hear myself saying all of the time, but I am not sure where I got them from:
If you can't block it or protect it, you can't run it or throw it.
Teach kids to compete at their highest level, no matter what the clock or the score indicates.
You play like you practice, there is no magic switch you can turn on and off on Friday night.
Before you can love winning you have to hate the thought of losing.
Attitude is contagious.
Play to win.
Teach kids to be great at fundamentals. You can always find a spot for someone who can block or tackle. This is what someone told me and this is what I tell youth coaches whose practice is the following: 2 mile run for conditioning Stretch Oklahoma Drill Run Plays Take a few laps and go home
Loch, great story.
