One thing that is often neglected is learning how to work as a coach. Too many times coaches get in to the profession thinking that they are just going to coach X's and O's and their position. They have no idea of the little yet important things necessary to make the program run smoothly. This includes laundry, supervision of locker rooms, driving buses, handing out / maintaining / picking up equipment, lining fields, practice prep, weekend work (grading, breaking down film, game planning), game duties. I'm sure there is a lot that I left off.
What I am trying to point out is that it takes a hard worker to be a good coach, not just one that knows his X's and O's.
As far as teaching X's and O's to young coaches and new staff members there is one tried and proven way that has been used for years. Every year, whether we have a new coach or not, we have a staff clinic. The coordinators will go over the schemes, objectives, goals, etc. of their perspective side of the ball. Then each varsity position coach will go through the fundamentals that he will teach his players. The verbage, the how, the why, and the drills to develop the fundamentals.
Coaches then have a chance to have input, ask questions, and go through the drills.
Why do we do this? We want everyone to be on the same page. JH to freshmen to sophomore to JV to Varsity, the players go through the same drills, learn the same verbage, learn the same fundamentals, and thus the same offense and defense.

devoloped is one thing, having to hold their hand every step of the way is another. I would rather have coaches who are their because they want to coach instead playing golf. Lot of wisdom in those old guys. I can learn from just as they can learn from me. To be old and be out their in florida sun? takes some coco nuts. I will find a spot for guy who has done it and wants to continue doing it. I dont want the guy who decided it would be nice to give coaching a try. i want the guy who knew he wanted to coach since drawing plays with his buddy in 9th grade math instead of doing his homework. I want the guy who has football books in his library even if they are elementary. Their has to be a fascination with the x's and o's, same with coaching personalities.Football has to be a fascination. I have to know he wants to know and will not stop until he knows. If you have people like that? you dont need mandated reading list and videos to watch. Cause in the end they are going to find every book and every video related to what I am doing and get them at all cost. they will know the video and or book frontwards and backwards. I wont have to teach them, They will make me teach them. And don't forget about the rainbow kisses and lollipop dreams to go along in this delusion. Sorry coach, your dream world isn't going to happen. I strongly suggest you listen to the management techniques being mentioned here to HELP your team. It is just plain foolish to say "MY GUYS ARE GOING TO BE _____" Look around...many headers are looking for warm bodies... why not learn how to make these warm bodies warm PRODUCTIVE bodies.
