Seems like the Ivy League is trying to keep academics at the forefront of their universities and make athletes truly be student-athletes. What a unique concept !!!!!!!!!!

"They can transfer elsewhere as a scholarship player or as a walk-on. Although they can withdraw from the portal at any time, the team they intended to leave is not required to take them back or keep them on scholarship."

dbapes--
I would be real cautious about getting a teacher certification just to coach. Unless you are really into "shaping the youth of America", it can make for some extremely long and unhappy days just to get to practice at the end of the day.

Agree with 'blb'---I think the issue is more being the HC and not being in the building rather than length of commute.

Understand what you're looking for but think its nearly impossible to come up with based upon the circumstances & environments that so many of our players exist in day-to-day. Would approach it more from a set of 'team expectations' and then feel that you're going to have to look at a lot of issues on a case by case basis.
Not saying to have a program that runs half-a## but non-negotiable rules (as some other posters have stated) need to be universally enforced--extremely hard to really do that in all situations that arise in a season.

We are still talking about coaching a HIGH SCHOOL sport, correct ?
Pair this with the 'How many hours are you putting in per week' thread and you have:
#Grinding8760HoursPerYear / #Grinding8784HoursPerLeapYear

Public and private all in conferences and playoffs together--playoff classifications by enrollment only (no multiplier for privates)--

Check out the WIAC schools (Wisconsin--Div III conference)--most of them, if not all, do camps that are instruction oriented. Kids have had good learning experiences (as well as some fun) over the years at these camps.

Have used it with the results that you might expect--first group of students did what they were supposed to and understood the topic, second group of students did what they were supposed to but really don't have much of an understanding of the topic, third group of students did little to nothing of what they were supposed to and obviously understand nothing of the topic--and now you are ready to begin today's class / practice.

Cheap team logo ball cap because you always need to toss it down to act as a spot or ball marker during Indy drills--visors don't seem to work as well on this side of the ball....

Agree completely with blb: "Play the 'Game Deciders' (best players) until the game is decided."
Have coached teams that didn't have the talent to win a game no matter how much work they put in as players and we put in as coaches. Its public HS (no recruiting)--its not college (can't go out and scholarship to fill the deficiencies)--its not NFL (can't go buy what we need). Use common sense---please lose the argument that 'its up to you to stop us'. In some situations the other team just can't stop you..........

Wisconsin is a mix of public and private with 7 divisions based strictly on enrollment. Not a problem, after all, nobody recruits---do they

What's important to their growth and maturation as individuals?
What's important for the team's success?
What's important to you as the adult in charge?
What are you willing to constantly and consistently enforce?

Menard's or Home Depot--4' x 8' sheets of melamine paneling--cut them into whatever size you want. Cheap--easy to do--disposable.

Agree with Coachguy 83--for our program the plusses of not bringing the kids in on Saturday far out weighed the minuses. The only thing you need is honest communication from any injured kids to the HC so those situations can be dealt with on the weekend rather than being surprised on a Monday.

We started doing a 'pre-practice' in your position groups that was about 10 minutes long--was supposed to involve position specific drills that also got your kids warmed up. At the end of the time the HC would blow a whistle and the groups would sprint into a large circle and do team jumping jacks--then huddle around the captains (do a little hooting and hollering) break it down and sprint back to their coaches to start Indy period. I liked it--new HC wasn't a fan--I'm no longer at the place.

Done it for years (with all the stuff UTCHUCKD mentioned) in a couple of decent quality plastic tote boxes with lids. Check it every week before we leave for a game--just have to make sure to have eligible and ineligible #'ed extra jerseys. Also need to switch out home and away jerseys / pants for home / away games.
