I think this is a fine idea. Obviously your not gonna get to coach them up as much bc you cant watch all of it. It would be really good if you could film it and get them to watch after practice. But I have been there with not enough coaches. Obviously its not ideal, but nothing is when you don't have enough coaches. I think its great to combine groups... spend half time coaching up LBs and other have coaching up DL... & they still get the entire time doing that drill.

to me the 2 score rule is great to go by. While I agree offenses do tend to be quicker scoring these days, in game I feel like I am still in the game as long as I am within 2 scores. I feel more comfy when I get the game outside of 2 scores. As far as blow outs go ... more than 4 scores is a blowout IMHO

2 part question--the hudl sideline thread made me think of 1. as an o coach or a d coach--how do you set your other coach's eyes for what they are looking for in a game 2. how long did it take for you to be able to zoom out and see more than one area (playside ol for example---then being able to zoom out to the entire playside defensive structure) 1. I have done this in past, but it takes a very disciplined coached to "not watch the game". I havent had much success getting things from this. 2. Not sure how long, I believe some guys just see things unfold better than others or worse than others.

I love the holding 10 yds from LOS or spot if downfield.. 10 yds from spot 7 yds in backfield is too harsh.
Also I am an offensive guy but I hate he THROW AWAY RULES. In college there is no penalty for trying to get away with it... it is the same as a sack. Offense has enough advantages without being able to just run 15 yds back and swing it.

I dont like 3 days to install... To me 5 is minimum. I like to install 2 paired runs per day (ex = buck, trap or jet, belly etc...) then 2 pass concepts and 1 screen. The next dayI like to have a review period, maybe 5 minutes to talk thru yesterdays stuff and maybe get or 1 or 2 reps of it. Then go into next set of plays. Then on day 3 have a 10 min review period and review both days quickly. On 4th day I dont review day 1 but may run it in team.

THIS^^^^^^ With all the heat related rules now I make sure all of my schedules have scheduled water break/heat breaks and have times also . is that the only time you allow water or simply it is written CYA? We don't have scheduled water breaks, but there is water always availiable. If the temp falls into a range where a stoppage of practice is needed, our trainers step in. No we had a trainer tha had water and occassionally groups would go get water quickly as they were moving. But, we did not have water at each group 100% of the time so we scheduled them.

There's also a degree of CYA to having a written practice plan. I've produced a practice plan once or twice to demonstrate that an injury happened during a low-contact drill in accordance with CA rules about contact. It's never been required, but it buys me credibility for the future and trust from the AD. THIS^^^^^^ With all the heat related rules now I make sure all of my schedules have scheduled water break/heat breaks and have times also .

Ive been told 2 things pertaining to this ... 1. Failure to have a plan, is planning to fail & 2. If its not written down it didn't happen add a 3rd if you don't follow it, what is the point of it...... Totally agree!!!!! at old school Id spend all this time making out a schedule, & then glance down and see a group doing something totally different. Drove me nuts bc coach working the group wouldnt partake in the meetings to game plan and then do what he wanted and not being the head guy I had no say on keeping him!

I don't find your response snarky. I actually like your insight on this board. But, I think you knew the spirit in which I was asking the question. Yes I did, I guess my point (which I apparently explained poorly) was that rather than looking for metrics or numbers from the stats page look for measurable items from performance based tasked. For example, : team effort or pursuit grade on defense. How many times did you get "X" number of players to the football before the camera cuts (or within 2 seconds of the whistle or whatever you do to evaluate pursuit) What percentage of plays did the players carry out their fakes so well that a defender took himself out of position? How many times did the second tackler in make a legitimate attempt to strip the ball? you could probably set up a goal for procedure penalties. Off season attendance. Things like that. I think when you start to talk about other things that I am sure will be mentioned in this thread it really is more of an outcome based number. Things like "x" number of yards or explosive plays, or completion percentage (given up or achieved) etc. all become heavily dependent on the opponent don't they? I feel they are simply secondary scoreboards somewhat. Look at a game in which you win 35-3. I bet you will find that you most of the "stat line" stuff you come up with will simply mirror the score. If you are a running team, you will have big rushing yards. Passing team big passing yards. Probably several explosive plays. Probably stopped the run and didnt give up explosive plays etc. i don't know how having such things as a goal really influence anything. The same with other metrics such as the ones being mentioned on this thread. I see 3rd down efficiency mentioned a lot in threads like this. But what does that actually mean? How can "wanting to succeed on 3rd down" actually impact things that are ACTUALLY OCCURING on the field? --"Darn It Johnny. We are trying to achieve ____% 3rd down efficiency. Why did you go and get pancaked by that LSU signee and let them run for 35 yards. Now our 3rd down numbers are bad, AND we gave up an explosive play" I just have never seen much value in such secondary outcome reports. There is a scoreboard already. While I understand your point somewhat, I do believe emphasis does help kids. In the perfect world, every kid goes 100% balls out every play. In reality that doesnt happen especially in high school. Kids are gonna have mental lapses. If you emphasize the importance of 3rd downs, I believe it helps kids avoid those things on 3rd down. Now the other team is still gonna convert or stop some bc they practice too, but I do believe emphasizing things does help. And to answer question about different teams leading the turnover stat. While coaches may try to do same stuff every year most dont do exactly the same thing and different groups of kids relate to things differently.

I heard a stat a couple years ago that no team had ever won a super bowl by losing turnover battle & QB rating in same game. So I think these are both important. I also agree with explosive plays... In high school because many teams dont throw much id say explosive plays/turnovers would be a huge factor. Lastly, penalties that prolong a drive for opponents, or stop a drive for our offense is big as well

I think a point system for classification has merit, but must be used over at least 3 years to be accurate. You cant move a team up a class for having 1 great class that caught some breaks and made a run. However, if a team wins or plays for a championship 3 years in row, it might be time to look at bumping them. As far as using it for wild cards, I liked what coachd said they had used, rewarding for playing up and for opponent wins.

At a school I was at a couple years ago, they have camp at their school. The kids turn one side of the gym into a tent city. They bring air mattresses and mini fridges and tvs and xbox etc. They have extension cords going everywhere. Then they practice... They do it for a week. I think a week is long but they wake them up for late night or early morning runs or workout times. Will have class time etc. Its pretty cool ill try to find a picture of the tent city.

I know some don't do it and are successful. I personally keep them to combat anyone that disputes legality of something or water break times etc. Plus, If you don't have a plan how do your position coaches know how long to stay in Indy and what to coach up in groups or team. A script helps position coaches know what to look for on the upcoming play. Just don't understand any reason other than stubbornness not to … just my opinion

You said 8 points in the playoffs... How are points earned??? I am sure it has to do with winning games but how many I think a merit type system is good in some ways. For instance... here in Tennessee, 3A football is decided preseason... A school has now won 6 straight and 8 out of last 11 with other 3 won by Private schools that have since been moved to D2. In this case this team could have probably won or finished 2nd in the largest class most years. However, I dont think you should be moved after 1 good year, but then you get into where do you draw the line... Good Topic Again I haven't read the actual proposal but basically you win round 1 of the playoffs you get 1 point, round 2 = 2 points, etc... Man thats tough... So if my school has the best class in school history and goes to the semis and gets beat 50 pts, then next 2 years we have to play up??? Dang thats tough

Can someone please help me understand the difference in culture and tradition? As it pertains to high school football? To me, and I am no academic giant, CULTURE is the day to day attitude and how you and players conduct themselves. TRADITION is something that ties you to the past and helps build on "culture" of the past.

I told him that we should make all our plans for success and not failure. Mega eye roll. I assume you don't practice onside kick recovery, two minute drills, stripping the ball, trick plays, etc then? I apologize for this back and forth and hijacking the thread and it will be my last response... but if that post and calling someone a 3rd grader is how you help ... I would rather not have it lol... I come here to discuss football not roll my eyes at other peoples posts or stoop to name calling when they disagree with me. Hope you have a great day and good luck.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but... We "walk the field" silently before every game, home and away. Kids wear their game jerseys and we all hold hands and walk from endzone to endzone. We form a circle in the endzone and our 2-3 captains speak in front of the team. Then each coach speaks (we have 3 coaches in total). In all my years around my area, we are the only team that does this to my knowledge. *We also arrive to away games early enough so we don't interfere with teams on the field already going through specials before the game* Does it help us win games, no, but it is something these kids and alumni never forget! Our alumni is also invited to walk the field for senior night/home coming game as well with our team and the kids love seeing the older players and listening to them share a story or two... I am not a hand holder either... but I love the idea of having something oganized while walking the field... I also love the idea of letting alumni walk with you on SR night. Had a coach tell me once you dont wanna invite people onto field with ya bc if things arent going good they may be mad ... I told him that we should make all our plans for success and not failure.

Back in 2005, I joined a staff that at the time ran an inverted bone offense. I got hired early enough to where I spent the whole summer with the program, but one of my first assignments was to present our power play to the rest of the staff. They were learning the offense as well, but they were ahead of me as they had studied it all winter and spring. My HC said that having me present on power (and then later sweep) was intended to catch me up and he was right. It greatly helped me learn the new offense. I love this... bad thing is I have had asst before that would quit before doing this because they could not do it. While not everyone should be experts on all aspects of the play or scheme... all should have a basic understanding and then be an expert on their position's job on the play ... Great way to develop staff... I feel that while going to listen to other coaches at clinics is important... meeting with your own staff to discuss details is vital to success

Had a team trying to score the game winning TD with no timeouts and less that 1 min in the game have someone fake an injury everytime they got tackled in bounds so the clock would stop. We got lucky and picked them off to win the game, but I thought it was a great strategy using the rules in place. I wasn't happy at the time, but see the logic. wonder who that was

I'm all against cheating... but most of these are gamesmanship type things... anyone that says these are cheating and immoral but teach holding ... or cut blocking as aim for thigh and slide down, etc.... are being hypocritical... you cant make pushing the envelope ok in one area but immoral in another area IMHO
