I encourage our kids to use the 7 pad full girdles. Even have knee pads in them. No one forgets their pads that way! We just went to that this past season. Kids liked them but we had problems with our Nike game pants sliding up over the knee pad. Refs removed several kids from games until they taped the pants down to keep them from sliding up

If you know someone who works for the highway department or in construction, the road barrels used as traffic markers have handles built into the top. (Of course, I am not advocating liberating some via creative acquisition.....just sayin). We used the construction barrels a few years ago, DOT was going to toss 3 because they had been ran over. I was able to straighten them out. Was very handy with the handles on top. Put them away after the season and school maintenance claimed them to block off streets for the buses. Have to come up with new ones now

Our district is so small we aren’t even able to pay assistants so I take any help I can. I’ve had parents and siblings of players as coaches. Had very good experiences as well as very bad ones. Over time I’ve developed a set of rules regarding these types of coaches. Our most basic rule has been to try and have the parent not be their kid’s position coach

I had 2 XC kids last season. Worked out for practice because we do study hall/lift right after school. They ran during that time. Nearly all of the meets were on Saturday too so it may have hurt XC more than anything. XC coach played football with me in high school so and we only have about 20 boys that participate in any sports, so we know we have to work together

I would never tell a kid not to participate in other sports. We only have about 20 boys and 15 girls that even participate athletically. This season we have a new basketball coach that while he seems to be a good guy has little control over the kid’s demeanor. I still would never keep the kids from playing. I do try to involve myself in that program best I can, stats, announcing, etc. I take opportunities at our monthly player meeting to remind them of our core values. It’s not only a good opportunity to remind them of this but also a chance to instill those values to new players. My suggestion would be to tell players to stick to your teams values and all things will work out

Anyone have experience with their kids visors fogging up? I have one kid that has to wear one (almost fully blind in one eye) but it keeps fogging up during games. Anyone have a solution to this?

We usually have 16-20 kids in our 1A 8 man program in Oregon. Haven't had enough for a JV in my 8 years as HC. Sometimes I have freshman that are starters but usually not. As several of you stated, you have to get kids in or they won't keep playing. I will throw them in on kick team, especially when we go onside. Also there almost never are extra point kicks so I try to get 1 or 2 on the 2 pt try. Go with a Heavy package. Anyway to let their mama's and daddy's see them out there on Fridays

Hang jerseys, check. Wanted to do that but never had the room. Helmets - We have shelves but they are in the other room and I don't want to move them if I don't have to. Also I got dinged by maintenance because I had some tote boxes on top of a storage case, but they didn't say anything about helmets being 10' up in the air on a 1' shelf. We get earthquakes here so having things up in the air isn't good. Looking at the bar-though-the-earhole type or the shelf cart. Anyone have a preference there, pros/cons? Shoulder pads - on back is best, but big space eater. Will likely stay with the stack 'em racks. Misc small items - tote boxes We issue the kids 5-pad girdles that are theirs to keep. We have to do that 1 time and if they want another then they have to pay for it. So we don't stock the thigh, hip, or butt pads. We also went without practice pants last year and that worked. Still have to have them for scrimmages. Ventilation - lots of it, check. Not sure when they will be starting this but the power & HVAC will be a big item. What else should I be thinking of? I had very little space in ours and am sharing with every other sport. Found this aluminum rack being tossed on a construction site. Was told it is used for running data wire. Anyway, I hung it from the ceiling and was able to hook 30 helmets from it plus stack shoulder pads above it. Opened up a lot of space.

30 years ago the shop teacher at our school marked it out once and drove in a 18" piece of re-bar into the ground along the inner circle of the track (track has a full 4" curb separating the track from the grass). Now all we have to do is run the string to each stake. Still a long process but we don't waste time with lining out stakes

What time is too late for pregame meal? I'm not a teacher, just a walk-on coach. Have to work a regular job. Boss is pretty good about giving me time off for games but would be pushing it to get off too early for meals

No. Not to my knowledge. We ordered the same ones every time and its been great. But I will say that chrome logos on matte helmets is dope, clean, fresh. Whatever adjective you want to use. I second this. We went with navy Matt with a gold chrome FSU spear. Here in Oregon we aren't even allowed to used the spear anymore. No more Native American depictions

I coach in a state that doesn't allow for Spring Football. I wanted to know, for you guys that do have it, how do you manage to do it with your multi-sport athletes? What time frame (what month or months) does it cover? In Oregon, our "Spring Ball" isn't allowed until the day after Memorial Day. Unfortunately, it's also the first day allowed for all sports and June in Oregon is when summer basketball is played. I'm at a small school where everyone plays every sport (I encourage it) so it comes down to do I make the kids do double duty during June or just wait until July? Neither option is great, just try to make the best of the situation. I've tried to just stick to weight training until basketball is over but very few kids believe you can lift and not "mess up your shot".

I come from a small school (70 kids) with just 1 middle school feeding our program. My first year as varsity HC, the MS HC decided that they would go to an 8 man schedule. This made it difficult for many freshmen to make the transition to high school ball in the next few years. But their biggest problem was that the coach refused to use my terminology at the middle school. Running a 4 man front he called the 2 down lineman "guards". That would be fine but we called them tackles. Kids took nearly the whole season to learn what defensive tackles were. This is just one example but it makes such a difference having a feeder system that buys in to your program's system & philosophy. The past two seasons our MS has had a new coach and both only wanted to run our system and teach our culture. It has already paid dividends as freshman are ready to contribute at the varsity level
