stuffcoachessay go to mhsaa.com/sports/football, under "NEW 2020 Football Playoffs" click on "New Playoff Formula." It is designed to (supposedly) reward teams that play tough competition-discourage "scheduling" wins. For 21 years prior to this all teams with six wins (and some with five) qualified for postseason. THank you!

Thank you all for the information. That is a huge help! Part of our state committee and constantly looking for a better more accurate way. Grew up in PA, Coached in Indiana and VA. Some of you posted your points/ Specifics of the selection process. For those who didn't could you be more specific? Currently where I am, We've had a points system for years and felt that was too easy to manipulate. It was not difficult to manipulate the schedule to put you in contention for a spot. For example, one year Team A went undefeated playing mostly bottom feeders and mostly lower division teams and only one with a winning record (5-4) because of our points system they ended up as a 2 seed. The 1st team out played 5 of the top 6 Beating the 1 seed, losing to #3 in 3OT's and losing to #4 15-8 and was up 8-7 with 2 to go. Needless to say #3 beats #2 42-0 with a running clock the whole 2nd half.
More recently we went to still using the points as a data point and a coaches poll to help us narrow the field and then the selection committee announces the parings. Of course there are those who feel we are leaving someone out. The last couple spots are always contentious. Just trying to make the process more seamless and not reward "Strategic Scheduling"

Quick question: How does your state determine its playoff participants?

I quit wearing headsets after my first year as a HC. I wish I'd have never put another one on ever again. My last year I got put in the booth. I hated that. I’ve worked with guys that get put in the booth without a headset. None of them have understood why. LOL

That was me this year. Second time in my career I've been up there. First time as an OC calling plays so it was a bit different than what this video shows. Second time was this past season, and I was that guy in the video. As the O Line coach I started out on the field, but found myself relegated to the booth after the fourth game. After 45+ years coaching as a HC, OC, and DC at the HS and college levels I guess the HC thought I would be more valuable upstairs. Not sure if that was the real reason or not, but all I did up there was chart our drives, eat junk, and talk ball with the other assistant up there with me. I understand. I've thought that way in the past. Always nice to have someone who knows the game and not just madden.

I got into it a little this year with a younger coach because I was in the box. It was the final drive of the game and we are up 5. It’s 4th and 2 with like 45 seconds left on the -40. We pressed our under neath coverage but played our safeties two high so we take away the quick stuff and get them off the field right there but are also protected against the deep ball. Their qb was a sophomore three games into his starting career and they had no legitimate over the top threat so I’m not at all worried about a bomb. Our tight ends coach starts screaming at the corner on our sideline to get back and don’t give up a TD. Our corner bails and they throw a hitch for the first down. We stopped them on the next set of downs and our offense took a knee in the victory formation but I would have liked to jump off the press box and land on that TE coach. We won, but dang if there’s nothing more infuriating than a coach who doesn’t work with a certain kid or group all week jumping in and messing stuff up. A few years ago we started 0-3 and I banished myself to the booth. I found I was being too negative. We won but I could hear all the chatter and guys coaching other positions as they saw fit. The guy signaling the Offense (Which I was calling) kept taking his headphones off to talk to others. we'd be late getting calls in. Finally I yelled "put your headset on and shut up!" My wife tells me late that I was in a completely enclosed room but I was so loud it was coming over the PA system and everyone could hear me. I took myself out of timeout the next week.

I may be the minority but this video pissed me off. However....14 years ago I was that guy. Coach, I am right there with you. my 1st 2 years on varsity I was that guy. I became a DC at 26 and couldn't believe what I would hear. It was easy to write bc now there is 21 years of being the guy on the sideline....

WOW. I think a lot of it has to do with their experience and background coming in. although I see a lot of young guys in the Jacked, Swag, Phone categories. older coaches tend to be Cliche, Complainers and old school.

silkyice Yup, pretty much. Honestly, I was on the freshmen staff and we did a p-ss poor job that season. We bickered among one another, didn't coach the kids up very well and it was a dysfunctional season. An older, smarter me would have stayed out of the internal conflicts on the staff and focused on coaching but I didn't. However, with that being said, the varsity HC and I sat down and talked about everything and he was willing to bring me back the next year as long as I got my chit together. I had done a lot of work with the team in the off-season and he recognized it. But, the parents had a mini-coup and demanded that the whole staff be canned so the AD stepped in and fired us all. Went 12 miles down the road, coached the freshman and sophs down there and put the wood to my former school's freshmen teams twice. We tried to use some personal experiences along with some of our close coaching colleagues. this is a pretty close to a "friends" as it gets. LOL
