Nothing can replace building a genuine relationship with them I agree the more quality time you spend with them, the closer the lineman will get as a group. I had a great group of lineman that spent so much time together. they started to call themselves "The Butchershop". I had shirts made for just the lineman with the name and logo on it. Great group of kids

I loved music at practice. I created a playlist with a mix of a lot of thing from Ric Flair quotes to WWE wrestling intros, no new rap so I didn't have to deal with kids having dancing sessions. The kids and coaches loved it. It all ended with the weathered incompetent track coach ran directly into the speaker tower knocking it down and busted our unit. He blamed it on the wind.

I think if you work on "your stuff" to get better and not focus on winning the 7on7, you get better. I would tell my QB, I don't care if you take a sack or tuck the ball and run. I care about competitions on time and no INTS. From a defensive perspective, you can work on alignments and communication. I would always ask my kids to cover for 5 seconds. If they run around and throw up a ghetto moon ball after 8 seconds its a sack to me. You could also ask the other coach if you can offer your own kid a rush from a coach.

Years ago I met with a mother that was furious about her son's lack of playing time. First off, I am a special education teacher. Her son had a cognitive impairment and a full time para at practice. He could not dress in football equipment by himself or tell you his address, yet she was adamant about him getting fair playing time. I explained to her that he has not shown the ability in practice to protect himself or others. She came back with "He's a gamer". So there's that

#1, Your rule makes zero sense at all to me. Like I can't even begin to understand what could possibly be the thought process there. #2, The kid should be lifting regardless. In season guys have a lifting program. Out of season guys have a lifting program. Get them all in the weight room. This seems to be your real problem. #3, Let kids be kids. Get over yourself 1. He quit. We are trying to instill in our kids a certain mentality. If you quit a sport you don't get rewarded by coming and being a part of us right away. 2. He does lift. We have all of our players lifting in class all, year round. This is after school. Not a problem for us at all. 3. So let kids quit whenever they want? And thank you, I'll take your advice to heart. Okay I get they are quitting another sport, but how does a player not wanting to play a different sport become your issue? What if it is in the student's best interest not to continue? What if the student wants to build a strong bond with the other players that are lifting after school? Shouldn't we be encouraging kids to take chances to join other programs. I think your rule deters kids from doing that. I'll reference my "bad coaching statement with an analogy.......... We all want players to be close with their parents and family, what if they are drug addicts? Does a player not have to right to make a decision to remove themselves from a situation that they do not enjoy? I get the whole commitment idea, but this doesn't sound like a kid that wants to quit another sport to focus on off season Halo. Sounds like he wants to get better at a sport he is passionate about.

I understand the importance of student athletes standing by a commitment they have made, but what if the other sport they originally signed up for is a sham? The coach is horrible, no structure, the coach promised to lift during season and bail out on that, and the student feels like they are regressing..... I have been part of a district where many of the off-season sports were ran like a rec league and almost everything was optional (including practice). If a student wants to benefit themselves by removing themselves from an off-season sport and lift, why punish them? Again I get the whole, quitting gets easier, and its what you signed up for thing..

We always face at least one team who runs, as I call it, "Sling Dat B!!CH" They have a few good athletes. QB is a freak who runs around til he sees someone deep, then he slings dat b!!ch. They're usually good for 1 long QB run and a few deep balls a game. Keep everything in front of you and they wont score more than 6 (they never have a kicker) We also see the massive, slow white team running triple option who feel the need to run rocket every other play. Their smallest OL is bigger than anyone on our team yet luckily for us they wont give the dive more than 8 times a game, usually cuz they're in 3rd and long after we gang tackle their "fast" kid for a loss on rocket. HAHAHA love this! My old DC used to refer to it as the "Ghetto Moon Ball". Chuck it up to hit the stars, hope it lands on something good.

Do you use music during practice? I find it energizes the kids and coaching staff (I purposely selected music to stop the dance off sessions). I would always start practice off with a different competitive drill. We emphazed competition at everything so it just fit right in and started the energy from the opening bell. Demand energy and enthusiasm during stretching. If that doesn't happen, have them do it again (I would not recommend putting this in midseason).

I just had an official tell us that you only need 5 guys on the LOS this year. Its a new rule for 2019 This statement is technically true, but omits that you cannot have more than 4 in the backfield. To be legal with only five on the line you'd have to be playing with 9 or less players. I know the new rule remixes the new wording.... The joke is he thought that was the full extent of the call. Only 5 total even with 11 on the field.

I’ve always been interested in programs that split their staff into O & D and coach 9-12. Does anyone have any experience in this type of model and could share the pros and cons? Also if you have any resources that you would be willing to share, that would be incredible.

Played a team week 8 and then the first round in the playoffs (week 10 for us). Week 8 we stomped them 41-0. We jumped up early and our kids played outstanding. To keep our kids from getting over confident during week 10, we watched their D1 QB's highlight and their D1 D-End's highlight. I also put together about 10 clips that could have been huge plays for them that could have changed the outcome of the game. The second game was much closer 27-0.

A lot of great ideas so far. We always started practice with a competitive call out drill. Usually a sumo ring or tire tug. At times to really get a good defensive scout look, we would put 8-10 mins on the clock. Offense would have to score (Blank) # of times (full field) within that time. If the offense met the challenge, they would not have to condition. If they scout defense stopped them, they got out of 2 days of conditioning. Great conditioning exercise for a tempo offense.

I think every song I had was over 10 years old. I feel like music really helped my practice from players being upbeat and being forced to communicate loudly. I think it energized the coaches and increased tempo. Older song eliminated the player dance off session

Had a guy in our area that was an OC and had a business and would get a ton of transfers. Even though they had 5-6 D1 kids, we destroyed them. After that, we never had to deal with the dancing WR training again.

Wondering if anyone has had experiences where they have major differences in philosophy and scheme among their staff/HC. If you were stuck in your spot, did you just bite the bullet and teach something you felt/knew was wrong? Not saying like wing-t vs spread, but things that you felt were fundamentally wrong.

Thanks guys. I really am excited for the change coming up. I think this will be a great opportunity to grow my football knowledge being in a new system. Years ago I created a football manual that contained assistant coaches roles and responsibilities. Its time for me to fulfill those jobs/responsibilities.

I resigned from my HC job last spring after having some great success at my school. Wife and I are having #2 and needed to help out more. Just accepted a new teaching position at a very good football school. Very excited to get back after a year off. The schools couldn't be anymore different. My current school, very little talent exclusively option. The new school packed with skill talent spread. This one will be interesting. Moving back into an assistant role will be different. Any guys out there make the transition from HC to position coach. Advice?

This was many years ago. I was new into coaching worked under a very well established coach that did it all (super old school). During a team meeting the HC was talking to the team and kicked the side of a sides chair and said "pull your shorts up". It was a medium kick, not very hard. The kid responded with "Don't kick my {censored} {censored}", the HC excused him right then and had me collect his gear. About 45 mins later here comes the kids dad walking across our field. Seeing this I excused my kids for water and started jogging over. I heard the coach tell the dad "We can talk after practice". I was about 20 yards away when I see this dad square up and take a swing at the coach hitting the brim of his hat, the HC puts his hands up (old coach was HUGE). At this time, I'm sprinting and complete goldberg spear this dad knocking the wind out of him. For the next few years, kids would joke around and say "Don't mess with Coach, he will take our your dad" Crazy story, just had to share

I don't necessarily agree. If not a parent meeting..a signed parent contract for those that can't make it. Perhaps a DVD explaining it etc. Again, if it is important enough to ask/mandate the parents who are going to show up to go...it is important enough for all. If not, well football isn't required. Or no parent meeting at all. Either works. There are times to be absolute. For us, this ain't one. The parent meeting handles a great deal.....like "don't approach a coach after a game"......stuff that needs said. But if a kids parents can't make it, or more aptly, refuses to prioritize it, we aren't going to leave that young man off our team. A player can not help if his parents can not attend or doesn't care about their activities. It seems like it would punish the player for having a poor parent.

I think modeling is key. You can't ask kids to do things that you are not willing to do yourself. This also goes for assistant coaches. I have let go several coaches that could not display the attributes that I thought were important. I can not hold a kid accountable for being late, if his position group coach doesn't care about time.
Surround kids with great people and great things happen. Finding great people is a struggle

You are not a medical professional and you relied on a medical professional (trainer) to do their job. I would think you would be fine. Imagine if it was a fractured leg. Trainer went through their examination and gave them the clear. Kid showed no signs or complaints. A week later they found out it was broken. Not your fault.

When playing in a huge game or against a team that just plain and simple have more talent, make the talks about execution. If we play our game and execute, we win. Its a game against ourselves. Just my approach
