We have kill calls vs certain formations, motions or personal packages depending on the week. Will also have auto blitz calls some weeks vs a particular formation if a team is very predictable on something. Using numbers for blitzes is my favorite when running scout. If we are running a 3-3, the left lb is 1, mlb is 2, and right lb is 3. 13 Left and Right Blitz, 23 Middle and right blitz etc. They rarely screw it up. Do your individual LB's have a way to automatically call of their particular Fire (or blitz) when either one can see that the blitz won't work? Oftentimes, as the game progresses, a LB can see what's going to be run and that if he blitzes it will take him out of the play. So, if you call it...is he absolutely committed to it? For scout I will kill something myself if it doesn't make sense after I see what our OC is running.

2010 was last time we had any two-a-days. Besides their being rules in Illinois about practice time, teachers and or students always go back at some point the first week of practice in our district. This year teachers are back on the first official day of practice. Also, we spend 25 days in summer practicing, mostly in shells. Gosh- 25 days in shells is essentially six weeks of in-season practice
If I quit coaching football, the summer will be the #1 reason.

They're set. You can get a pretty much complete one one thousand count in before the ball's snapped.
Not even close. Maybe a half second if you are generous.

I can not think of anyone who we played that had solid special teams and then had what I thought was a poorly coached offense or defense. I have played some teams where the opposite was true.

Sometimes game plans do not work or the opponent does something completely different you did not prepare for. How comfortable are you putting something in on the fly or going back to something you had previously done, but had not practiced recently?

Terminology is the most important thing to stay consistent with. Skill sets vary by age and group. If your varsity has a run first QB and your lower level qbs are more stationary and pass first, there has to be some difference in what is called.

Our school district does not allow it. They are not allowed until June and only if they registered for summer camp.

Are you guys downloading them as clips or one file? I normally download all of ours at the end of the season, but starting last year when I chose the “one file” option to download a plays list it would freeze about half way through the game. When I asked Hudl about it last year they told me they were aware of the issue but it doesn’t seem to have been resolved.
Both. Occasionally we re-upload an old game if we are looking something very specific. We will also occasionally upload some of the more entertaining old games up on youtube.

The Hudl storage scam is something else. With so many teams moving to "HUDL" cameras, game/scout film is twice as long now time wise. It is probably even worse with basketball as every game film is two hours now when they used to be 45 minutes.
To answer the question we delete every scout film and all game film older than two years to stay under storage limit of 100 hours combined for our 3 teams. All game videos are saved to a hard drive after removed from Hudl.

Years ago we went through a phase were a lot of our kids bought vball knee pads and used them during games. Now we are in a phase where the knee pads kids use are about the size of bottle caps.

Unless everyone agrees, the defensive stats are the most ridiculous stats I've seen. There was a team around here that was counting a tackle of a QB on a zone-read behind the LOS as a sack. They would play a team that only had 20 pass plays called in a game and have like 16 sacks. I always use the official stat rules and only give 1 solo or up to 2 assisted tackles only. If you want to check the math, you should always have: Total Defensive Snaps - Touchdowns - Penalties = solo + .5*assisted Nothing makes me laugh harder than a team with only 75 defensive snaps in a game and has like 185 tackles between solos and assisted. it ain't just defense. Unless somebody takes the time to double check, the numbers are just what they say they are. Years ago when I first started coaching and our rival had a pair of brothers in the backfield, and there was a big deal made of how many games in a row the TB had 100 yard rushing games. The game before we played each other was for the conference championship and our rival lost a tough, low scoring game. Watching the film as defensive prep, the TB didn't seem to gain a lot yards -- no long runs/big plays but lots of carries. After watching it several times and being bored with trying to figure out how to slow them down, I decided to tally the gains the TB had from the film. Instead of the 107 'hard fought' yards to gain his 19th 100+ yard rushing game in a row, it actually was 87 yards gained.
There are a number of people who love to inflate tackle stats by including anyone on or near the pile. I think that is more common than people doing it the right way.
Someone showed me a facebook post earlier in the year of a Mom on our team claiming her son had six sacks in one of our games. The team we played attempted 9 passes in total and we didn't even hit the qb six times. Also he officially had 3 tackles in the game and one for a loss.

I ALWAYS took the ball first the last 7ish years I was a HC. It was a way for us to set tempo, physicality and mindset for the rest of the game. I liked to break people's will with a nice, long, punishing drive to start the game. If we scored and held them on their possession, then I tried to score fast on the 2nd possession. Now, they're really {censored}. I will also say that if you prefer to have the ball first, there's a very good chance you'll have the ball 1st 9 weeks in a row because conventional "wisdom" says to defer to the 2nd half. That's great. Take the ball to start the 2nd. I hope you enjoy being down 3 scores when you get it.
Well if you are down 3 scores at half, I don't think it would have made much of a difference either way.

Got to week 9 8-0 on coin tosses. We had guessed correctly 4 times and the opposing team had guesses wrong 4 times. The last toss of the year we were the home team. The away team correctly guessed tails. It is not something I usually pay attention to but my Captain mentioned it to me after we had won the first four of the year. Anyone ever go 9-0 or 0-9 on coin tosses for the year?

Playing the rare team on our schedule tomorrow that has a run, pass and play action for every formation they run.

Lots of factors could be in play. To be honest most unsolicited emails you send probably don't get read. I always looked to see if it was from a school account or personal account too. If nomercyspread@hotmail sent me an email it most likely wasnt getting checked. Now if TSmith@school.org sent one then it seemed more legit. Thats just me though.
If you post open date online , I would expect a response back. Especially with a school email.

It is not hard to write back with a simple no we have a game already or no we are not interested in playing you. This could also extend to film trades.

The roster purge will either make him a genius or a moron. I'm teetering towards the latter but we'll see.
He says the quiet parts out loud and doesn't pretend he is not dumping players. He told them what he was going to do in his first meeting in front of cameras. I do think he has gone too far, as you need scout team guys. However, I saw a story about how very few Colorado players who have entered the portal have found D1 schools and not many more have found 1aa schools. Just goes to show how low the talent level truly was. If you are a real power 5 scholarship player, at a minimum a 1aa should have interest.

It's kind of dance with the devil. If you want to be in the game, it will be part of the game. It's kind of like little league World Series, in areas that have that.... that is part of your feeder program. Do you reject it all, or embrace it? Or is that a false dichotomy?
I have yet to have a kid come back in the summer a better player after a spring of AAU 7on7. It's playing with your friends in the park without contact. It is better than nothing at all, but I would rather they play another sport then develop even more bad habits.

Local tourney had 50 teams with a 4 game guarantee this past week. $1000 entry fee. Is this a Chicago area thing or is this normal now everywhere?

Finding a job is easy right now. Finding a job that improves your pay if your 15-20 years in is the hard part.

Getting rid of the salary schedule is a long game. It doesn't impact current teachers much but drastically reduces the pay of incoming teachers. Not coincidentally, many districts who do this have trouble retaining teachers. A person I work with applied for a job at what was once a high paying district (still is if you started before 2015). He was offered a job with a 14k pay cut as they do not give more than three years. He was told he could make up some of the difference by coaching two sports. He said they acted surprised when he told them he would pass on the job.

In Illinois coaching 20 plus is a thing of the past. Most people who get a decent paying job just stop coaching and never leave.

Three of my favorites:
-I have to go home after school, my mom texted me our cat just died.
- I was helping paint our basement floor and accidentally painted myself into a corner. I had to sit there for a few hours to let the paint dry before I could walk across it.
- Our house was raided by the cops last night, they tore up my room and I can't find one of my spikes and my track top.

One school I was at was 20 minutes each on Tuesday and Wednesday for both sides of ball. Practices on Tuesday and Wednesday were also three hours long. Pre-game was ten minutes for both sides of ball.
What we do where I am at now is a bit different during season. Offensive day is Tuesday (Indy,Group,Team). Defense gets last 40 minutes of practice. The DC decides what to do for those 40 minutes. Wednesday it is flipped. I have seen that time split up all possible ways depending on opponent and what we need to work on. Practices are a little over two hours.Pregame is typically 10 minutes each.

Anyone work in an area that gives more than 7 years when switching jobs? Around here that seems to be the max and the better paying places give less.

I a guessing most coaches do not stay the 6-7 years really needed for this to matter. Less than 50% of the coaches in my area are around more than 5 years.

We had a team in our conference put the jersey of their best player on an injured who looked similar to him. First play of the game a kid with a random number we hadn't seen before scores on a long td. Someone checks twitter in the press box and the reporter at the game had the best players new jersey number for our game. We lost by a td.
