I'm on the receiving end of these at the freshman level with most of my kids being first year players. We lost 62-6 our first game which was fine because the opposing coach took his starters out and ran up the middle most plays. We just couldn't stop it. Last year we played teams that kept their starters in all game, throwing the ball up 50-0 and that's when I lose respect for those programs.

We had our would-be starting QB tell us the the 1st day of practice last year that he was transferring to a private school to play baseball. He made the decision in early June but waited until Day 1 to tell us... Kid was not missed though. Bad leader.

They're way too much money but LuluLemon ABC Pants are extremely comfortable and easy to move around in.

Our top 3 we usually hear are 1) "practice isn't fun"
2) "The team is bad"
3) " I don't want to get hurt"

Pretty straightforward. We have a player that is graduating and will be attending a state university. He asked me about how he can get involved with football as a student manager. Any idea who I'd reach out to or tell him to reach out to for this? Ask the EQ manager. The DFO is usually never responsible for the hiring of student managers. At UConn, us equipment managers were a seperate entity from the HC/DFO and our direct boss was the EQ manager. But the kid should be the one reaching out, not you.

I learned this in a coaching certification class a few years back. Do you take the kid who has the 85 talent but only gives you 78 of it, or do you take the kid who has 72 talent but gives you 76 of it.. I think you take #2 every time, explain to #1 why you did and it can be a weekly battle. But if #2 is in the weight room every day and working his butt off then he needs to get on the field.

For us it's RPO stuff. We're a triple option team and our QBs struggle w/ some of their Option reads, so we'd be asking too much to have them read the defender and then run OR pass from it.

We took our whole program (Freshman & Varsity) to see Army play two weeks ago. Tailgated, made it fun for the boys and everything. You can do a mix of both. But as coaches, we just sat back and watched the game as a fan, and hoped our kids got something out of it. My freshman seemed to get more out of the trip than the varsity, but we had a blast. Army runs the triple flawlessly. It was amazing to watch

The kids just don't connect to the old guys
How can you tell?
Many of the older guys have been coaching for 30+ years. They're not in the school, they're not in the weight room, they don't come to our passing league. and for all of them, they're philosophy is to Win, and that's it. Like the old days. Our kids want to have fun, and our coaches are against the idea that fun can lead to winning. It's why our numbers are so low.

HC/DC-41 OC/OL-65 at least ST- late 60s DB- early 60s DB-50 WR- 32 WR (Me)- 23 OL-39 RB- early 60s Freshman Coach- 40
We're on the old side, and unfortuanetly I don't think it'll get younger anytime soon. The kids just don't connect to the old guys

the only thing with LOYALTY is how long do you want that loyalty to last? is it a couple seasons for you guys? five years plus? I'm a young coach (23) 2nd season in @ my old high school, which will be my first paid year. My goal is coaching in college and I have the connections to realize that dream. If I got a job offer to a better school in the area, I'll think about taking it. I'm in the position of trying to further my career, isn't it best for me to experience new philosophies & systems before moving to the next level? If anyone has a suggestion, you can PM me. I don't want the thread going off track.
Anyway, I think hiring a coach who has the same philosophies as you is really important. On our staff, we have so many old timers who are excellent X&O guys but can't connect a lick to these kids. They're unwilling to adjust their coaching styles and philosophies of being screamers. So I think it depends on what's more important to you.

Children's head/necks are not fully developed yet to withstand the force of the ball. Girls' soccer is the 2nd leading sport in the country in terms of number of concussions. It's absolutely a step in the right direction.

Next month i believe. And CMU has always been great as car as coaching staff alowing coaches in. I havent been there in a while as im in cali now. But i grew up in the muskegon area and they were great allong with ferris and gvsu! I was just going to recommend this guy. Not sure what defense he runs, but I listen to him talk about special teams at a Glazier Clinic a few days ago and came away very impressed. Another person on my staff listened to him talk about DB's and was impressed with him as well. The Ball State coach in Muncie, Indiana comes to mind as well for specail team programs. Its almost a golden rule, whatever program the Head Coach is also the Special Teams Coordinator, they are going to have some good things there. Coach Lembo moved on to Maryland as the ST coach this past year, but even the new staff in Muncie is very good. Their HC is Mike Neu, who was the QB coach for the Saints. Two of my old bosses are on the EQ staff there, they have nothing but good things to say about the new staff.

It's not something we can control. We can teach them the plays, teach them the techniques and hope they're sticking to what we've taught them. We're not able to hire youth coaches or have any say who coaches at the youth level, so the most we can do is teach them and be on top of them as much as we can without sacrificing time to our HS program. One positive with our 7th grade team this year is that our HS principal is an assistant coach, so we know that team will run our stuff and stick to it.

I like using point method for younger kids when it comes to the mesh. Can Triple be done at younger levels??? Just as much as trying to sling it around, or basing out of the shotgun. We're going to have certain plays that we want each level to use. So our 6th, 7th, 8th grade teams we want them to be running triple,, midline counter sweep, rocket, and veer. It's good for those MS kids to start knowing our terminology and having a feel for what we do on varsity. As you go down to the lower levels, I think we want to just put in veer and maybe rocket, but to use our terminology and start working on the mesh and the drills we do. Our youth coaches want to pass the ball 25 times a game, more often than not they dont have a QB who can throw that well anyway.

Us as a HS staff are starting to meet w/ the youth coaches once a month and we're going to be putting on a coaches clinic for the first time this year. We have had some success in the past of getting the youth coaches to follow our lead but most of them don't like the triple option because it's "boring" and they all want to run the spread. Needless to say, our youth coaches aren't like the youth coaches on this site, as they're all dads and think they know enough anyway. We're going to the Glazier clinic in Greenwich CT in March, and I can tell you, I know of at least 3-4 youth coaches that won't give a damn about trying to better themselves. It's tough to work with. LOL triple too boring?... thats a new one. yeah you're telling me. we've had a top 25 Offense the last 5+ years or so, but it's not "flashy enough". Our youth coaches are ridiculous

I don't know what kind of Defense they run but Western Michigan and PJ Fleck are building a great culture and tradition that I think would be beneficial for anyone

I'm a 2nd year varsity asst. coach (23 yrs old) at my old high school in Connecticut. Played in HS, was an equipment manager @ UConn during the Pasqualoni/Diaco Years. Really fortunate to have developed a great relationship with Diaco and his coaching staff, hoping to use those relationships to get a job up there soon. I coach WR's, QB's during pre-practice, help w/ the DE's and run the D scout team and I was the QB for the O scout team, since we didn't have any QB's. We're a triple option team, always have been, and run a 3-4 on D w/ a lot of stunts. Definitely need to up my Defensive knowledge this year.
