Maybe you should only tell stories from last season ;-)

I understand. I was just checking to see if there was something else I wasn't considering other than the quality of kicker, punt protection issues etc. You will run at least 2 seconds off the clock before the safety So 12 seconds left Free kick time, either kick off or punt. Now the question I have is can u fair catch if they line up and punt the kick? If so can they then ask for a free kick and try a field goal? Or is that only in regular punts only? So let's say u can't, the kick should then take off at least 2 more seconds if they don't fair catch So now there is 10 seconds left. Can you get in field goal range in 10 seconds? I know our kicker this year if he gets off a good one would kick it down to the 20-15 yard line. So if they attempt a return your looking at it being maybe only 8 seconds left instead of 10 or possibly less. In NCAA there is no such thing as a fair catch kick. So Army wouldn't have that option.

Not necessarily "awful" coaching per se, but a decent story. Playing against a successful, well known coach in our league last night, we were up by 7 with about 8 mins left. They had it 4th and goal from the 12 after we got a sack on 3rd down. Our CB had good coverage on a wheel route and just blatantly shoved the chit out of the WR for no apparent reason as the ball is coming. They call pass interference which was the absolute correct call. I calmly walked over to our linesman to make sure the crew knows its not an automatic first down (you never know). So they mark off half the distance to the goal. 4th and goal from the 6, we say great lets get one more stop. Opposing team breaks the huddle...FB dive up the middle for 1 yard. Our defense runs off pumped up and offense runs on the field. The coach on the other sideline is freaking out screaming and hollering at the refs... We drove it down and scored again, so it may not have made a difference, but it pays to know the rules. Guess that's federation rules. In NCAA the ball would be placed on the spot of the foul and automatic first down. If the passing interference was in the end-zone the ball would've been placed on the 2 yard line. The more I read on this forum, the more I get to see how big a difference there is between federation rules and NCAA-rules. But being a rule-nerd myself have certainly helped our team out on more occasions.

There's another thread talking about the criteria to be a captains.
I was thinking, what requirements do you have for your captains when you've chosen the captains?
We have out captains doing the warm-ups, do the chant and told them to be the good example for the rest of the team. But we have some problems with the captains being to anonymous and kind of blend it with the rest of the players and not stepping forward when it's needed.
What do you do, to help the captains lead the team? Do you have captains-meetings? (how do these meetings work)
Do you have any rules for the position of the captains? - 2 offence/defence or perhaps 1 for each groups?
We need more visible captains, so would really appreciate any input I can get from here.
I know we've been vague in our explanation of our captains and that's why our situation is like it is.

Anyone ever had a kid line up in a 3 point stance at Linebacker? I've had this experience a couple of times and it took everything in me not to bust out laughing. I once had a CB line up in a 3 point stance.

Well. We remove the warning labels, when we have to paint the helmets. Have never really given any thought to any of this.
We all know the american way of suing everyone, but I always looked at it like a stereotype and never really thought to take it this literal, not even of my trips over the pond.

As an european coach, I'm really surprised to see a post like this. Is this really something you have to think about and be proactive, to avoid being in such a situation? Do players/parents sue the coach if the player gets injured? Or is in other situations? I understand in situations like Jerry Sandusky, but beside criminal activity, what could as a coach bring you in a court room?

I'll make another post since it's another story.
We were playing a game some years back.
Our opponents tried an onside-kick but the ball didn't travel 10 yards. Our second closest player to the ball yelled to our closest guy to stay away from the, so he wouldn't touch it. When he yelled to get away from the ball all the opponents also went away from the ball, so when he got to the ball he looked up and saw no opponent near him, so he picked up the ball and went for a touch down.

Some years ago, while I were still playing, there was another player who was just started playing football. It was one of his first scrimmages, if not his very first. He was playing FB and after some time he went to the coach complaining he didn't get the ball. He said he had gotten through the defence on every play and if he would just get the ball it would be a TD.
It's something that stuck with me and since I myself started coaching I've always remember, that no matter how basic you think it is, make sure to explain it to the players.
