We have two Weight Lifting Classes that they can take during the day. If they can't make it fit there schedule we have lifting before school at 6:15 and after school 3 days a week. Last year we had more guys choose to lift before school than after. We expect our guys to lift regardless of sports they are playing. We have a ton of 3 sport athletes if we only lift during june and july that doesn't leave a ton of time to get stronger. We lift 3 times a week during football season.

One thing that was new this year that I hadn't seen much of is We played a lot of teams that did unbalanced formations with a split end covering a TE or with two split ends and one of them being covered.

Has anyone every used the Composite GSTs vs the leather ones? I hate paying 100 dollars for footballs and wonder what they main difference would be. I am tempted to save $65 a ball.

Does anyone use any good apps for communicating with your team? Schedule updates, reminders, ext. I don't teach in the building that I coach at and am looking for the best way to communicate with my players. I don't text with players, I have set up team facebook and twitter pages but most of the kids don't have either of those and I am too old for Instagram or tik tok. Thanks!

I don't think Ohio's Point system is perfect, but I do think it is as close as you can get. You get points for beating a team and more points if they are a bigger division than you and then you get second level points for the games the teams you beat win. I like that its very simple and MOST of the time gets the right teams in.

Its week to week for us. If we are playing team that passes a lot we do more 7 on 7. IF we are playing a wing T team we don't do any 7 on 7.
I do not enjoy 7 on 7 and would prefer not do to do it ever.
We are a small team so what I like to do is half the D 7 on 7. On one side its varsity players vs varsity players and on the other its jv vs jv. We always have the Varsity side go then the jv. The side that isn't going gets lined up while they other side is running their play. When we started doing it like that I started to like 7 on 7 a little more.

PB&J, Chocolate milk, but I think the best one we have done is Austin Crackers. Cheap and no clean up

I only have experience with Ohio but I prefer it to any other play off method I have read or heard about... I think there is something very exciting about trying to figure Harbin Points at the end of the season when you are cutting it close.

We have the guys come in 7-9 AM on Saturdays to watch film, lift, and run. 9-noonish the coaches break down film for next week. I come in Sunday morning by 7 to finish watching film and draw scout cards. The goal is to be done well before the Bengals game. (I know I know- I don't know why I bother watching either.)

We have had teams in the low 20s 9-12 We do half line a lot. If there is a big gap in talent between each side of the line we have the defense hold bags. The dline holds big stand ups and the LBs hold shields and still run to the ball. That way the O can still fire off the ball and practice getting to their assignments. Also we have the big trash cans so we can set up Defenses and at least run plays on that. I don't like o vs air unless its conditioning. The lineman arn't getting any practice with assignments and thats what they need most. I think its harder to get a good look on D if the scout O is really bad. I just try to get the best look we can with varsity guys vs varsity guys in drills. This year we don't get a great look from our scout O so when we do LB drills I work more full speed drills to practice setting the edge, reading guards, and filling inside.

Boosters have budgeted some money. We’ve got granola and protein bars (can get costly), PB sandwiches (principal put the kabosh on that), cheese sticks I’m just looking for multiple options Have done bananas etc for before Why did the principle stop the PB sandwiches?

After lifting we go with Chocolate milk, Austin Crackers, and Freezer pops... all of them are fairly cheap. One year we did peanut butter and jelly after practice. Our coach called it the PB&J buffet. That got pretty expensive, He kept all his receipts and it cost quite a bit of money. I buy the milk, crackers, and freezer pops. I dont keep track of the receipts because I don't want to know how much I spend.

Serious question- what do you do after you have padded a game is there someway you organize the plays in order to look for tendencies? Or is it more of an exercise to fully understand what a team is doing?

Kids just now understanding how to block veer.... our rule is first thing to the left or right (there’s a more advanced rule, but we don’t play any stacked teams). We randomly block the wrong way and get people killed in the backfield. Finished 3-6 with a low seed playoff bid, but now that we understand our rules idkkk what could happen. Glad it took 12 weeks for someone to understand the first thing to their left or right. Been there, still don't understand why. Son, are you seriously telling me that you're 16 years old and don't know your left from your right? Had one kid that would have to hold up both hands in an L shape to see which one was his left.

Kirkland in Ohio has had an impressive run the last few years. Believe they are in 2nd smallest division in Ohio. Their defense this year is giving up 2.6 PPG! No one has scored more than once on them.

an area team near me had the starting qb tear his acl running through the banner before a game. Now I don't believe that had there been no banner the kid never would have tore his acl but that is a really bad way to miss the rest of the season.

Has anyone else had trouble with Xenith Helmet Chinstrap Snaps? Do they make metal snaps? Friday we had Two or three. We have at least one break per game. Wouldn't be that big of a deal but we can't afford to have kids coming out for a play with only 20 guys our drop off is pretty big between out starters and everyone else.

Ohio- first day was July 30th. We have to go 2 with helmets. 2 with uppers. 1 with full gear no contact. and then contact. Our first day of contact is Saturday. First scrimmage on Tuesday, a scrimmage the following Friday, the Friday after that is the last scrimmage, and the first game is the week after, which is the Friday before school starts for us.

We had 25 guys sign up to play football 9-12 so if we were to say that all starting spots are open then it would pretty much be an empty threat. Now we have said something like we will find someone who can set the edge before next week or we will find someone who can down block.

How do you get the baseball and basketball kids in there? We still have kids missing for AAU tournaments and pole vaulters that think they will get to big if they lift weights. Drives me crazy. I am AD. They don't have a choice. That being said, we have a tradition of chmapionships in all sports and d1 players. Plus, the start to jump higher and get faster and stronger, so it is an easy sell. Maybe one day we will get there.

Baseball team made it to the semi-finals and lost to eventual state champs. Won first game, lost second game in 9 innings (hs plays 7), lost third game. The team that beat us went on to sweep championship series 3-0 and 11-1. So we did not start spring training until Monday. 4 days of practice. Last night we played the two teams that beat us last year. Both were 2016 champs and 2017 runner-ups. The second team we played already has five kids with d1 offers and have 3 more that might get them. One of our better players hurt his knee Tuesday. 6'3" 250. Should be back in 4-6 weeks. Anyways, we played both teams one quarter each. Finished up 27-0 in first quarter, and finished up 9-8 in second quarter with a stop on 4th and 1. I highly encourage every coach on here to invest in high handle trap bars and get after it. We have three kids pulling over 600 pounds on them and our team average max right now is 425. Starters average 487. Baseball players got after it all baseball season in the weight room, as did basketball players who won state. Our kids are bigger, stronger, faster. We have always done really well in the weight room, but these things are a difference maker. I really believe that. We can fly. The video at the top of the link is highlights from last night. www.hudl.com/team/v2/14720/Boys-Varsity-FootballHow do you get the baseball and basketball kids in there? We still have kids missing for AAU tournaments and pole vaulters that think they will get to big if they lift weights. Drives me crazy.

We do PB&J and chocolate milk. We keep everything in the Teachers lounge and when we are done everyone goes in and gets milk and makes a sandwich if they want it. One year our HC did this all season long. He bought the PB & J and I bought the Milk. He said he spent $630 that season on pb & j and bread. Now I buy all of it myself. I don't keep track of how much it cost because I don't want to know.

We started this two years ago. We start keeping track of points in June. Lifting during the school year gets you bonus points in the summer. We have a minimum number of conditioning points that you must have before you can participate in a scrimmage or game. There is two ways to get points lifting in the summer or running after practice. We also use the points to pass out all the equipment. it is a big motivator for our guys. We went from about 4 people lifting per day to last year we had high 20s- low 30s per day. It has been great for us.
