at parent meetings yearly i offer this to those monday night former all star players that are dads in the stands now, who claim they were an all americant at who gives a dang high school in mulberry alaska.....
come watch friday nights game film with me saturday morning. come watch practice tape monday night, tuesday night, wednesday night, you tell me if little junior is doing the right thing, giving his all is not up for debate, but running correct route, blocking correct man, throwing to right player(reading d) making the tackle, etc...
in 25 years I have had 1 person come saturday morning after he felt his boy was deserving of the ball. he showed we watched hudl, i diagrammed every single play(offense) on the screen as to what they should be doing, gave him the qb reads of the defense if it was a pass, where his all star should have been in terms of routes, blocking, catching... after an hour or so, he looked at me and said, dam coach, i thought you was crazy calling the same play over and over, but its not.... (zone read, power, counter, jet) i thought the qb just dont like my baby boy,,,, dam man, im really sorry. i wont say another word this fall.
that is how you shut up parents. most are from missouri and the show me state. they dont believe you that billy is hot garbage and at 5'7 135 is not the feature back of my power i offense. and that 6'4 380 and 8 second 40 johnny boy cannot play pulling guard and he needs to lose 100lbs.
playing time is EARNED. not given. role on the team, be a great team mate. when you get in, go 100miles an hour. earn your time in practice. stop walking around and complaining. and tell mom to stop yelling put my baby in and dad to stop screaming throw steven the ball(fullhouse double tight offense).... rant over

I am not saying it's the right way to do things but I personally think every kid that is in good standing should play every game at the lower levels. And at varsity the kids that have been invested in the program should be played as often as possible. If our sport is struggling with numbers, then we need to allow kids to experience the best part of it...playing. I know their is value in competition and winning but on the freshmen B team surely there is a spot this could have gotten in without ruining the outcome for everything. If he was a turd, I would have a different opinion but good kids deserve to play. Plus you never know what will happen to a motivated kids in over the course of a 4 year high school career. As right as you may be, i disagree. we dont have a participation rule, thats pop warner/aau/usa football. best kids play. rules for parents, we dont discuss playing time. you want to know why he didnt play, come to practice and watch him compete with the person in front of him. end of talk. as far as varsity kids being invested, yes they should play, in blowouts, homecoming games and senior night(if a senior) otherwise, win your battle with the #1 in your spot. im not going to pull a starter just to give little billy some burn because he came to 100% of the summer workouts. by the same token, i will yank a player for screwing up, starter or not. when you are evaulated on wins and losses, not for getting kids in games or sending kids to college, better score 50, give up 0 and win every game you can. not saying its right, but its reality in certain places.

if I knew how to put a hudl video clip up here, i would show you. was the damdest thing ive ever seen.
ref threw the flag and we were all like, well thats on the 3, whats the play call, as i am going to the goal line portion of the sheet, gonna give it to the kid that just got tripped up, get him his TD. they waive it off and were at the 7. was floored. wonder i didnt get a flag, was on the hash yelling at the ref

without a doubt fantomi just dont see how that the federation can allow it in terms of safety. im not a hawk tackle guy or a concussion, lay of the qb, guy, but this is not anywhere near safe. a full speed runner and you kick his legs out from under him. because you couldnt tackle him, you trip him. doesnt make much sense.

i just dont know how that is in the best interests of safety! easily blow a knee out if the kid is planted and cutting off the leg you trip

we throw one of the middle, catch it and its a break away, at about the 7 yd line, the defender trailing, slide tackle like futbol, trips us. here comes the flag, then they waive it off and tell us, your allowed to trip anyone WITH THE BALL, just not a non ball carrier.
been coaching 25 years and never, ever seen or heard of such a thing. the rule is as vague as possible too. illegal blocking says a player shall not trip an opponent who is not a runner.
then illegal personal contact says no player shall strike and opponent with his fist, locked hands, forearm or elbos, nor kick or knee him.
so if your a blocker/defender, you may not trip your opponent as long as you dont have the ball. if you have the ball, the defense can legally kick your feet and trip you or is it a personal foul....
this is an awful rule.

I did checkerboards 2 years in a row. 9x9 3 tall for 27 feet total 1.5 feet off the end line and goal line. Can take it all the way across the field, It's a lot of paint, but man it was awesome.
Did diamonds another year, like Missouri. It looked good, but everyone asked why not checkerboards? It's easier and less paint than checkers. Tip of Diamond touched both lines, width was 18feet, So 30feet tall and 18 feet wide. Each side touched the next one. You can fill them in, put your mascot name in them Like (E)(a)(g)(l)(e)(s) Paint contrast color outside the diamond. Black in, white out, etc.
I should been a field crew guy, not a coach. Lol

mnike23 How does the chart get adjusted for being on 2nd/3rd Down? never thought about that, 3 timeouts you can burn 15 seconds, so 5 seconds for 3 downs, 3.5approx seconds for 4 downs 2 timeouts you can burn 40 seconds, so 13 seconds for 3 downs, 10 seconds for 4 downs 1 timeout you can burn 65 seconds, so 21 seconds per down, 14 seconds for 4 downs 0 time outs you can burn the full 90 seconds, so 25 seconds per down and then clock runs out on 4th down.

copy and paste from my call sheet Do we need a first down? Timeouts ---------3---2------1-----0 Time we can ----15---:40- 1:05-1:30 burn had to edit it to make it look right if its 1st down and they have 3 timeouts, this is the chart. you can burn 15 seconds in 3 downs, 1st down and 2 timeouts, 1st down and 1 timeout, 1st and 0 timeouts. i know every one isnt an idiot, but wanted to clear it up so it made sense.

i know a guy, who does his own card. hes in a somewhat smaller ish town, so more mom n pop places, but plenty of corporates, taco bell, chick fil a, etc... he spends 1 day going to all the mom n pop places, and will call the corporates to see if they can or need big check approval, if mom n pop places fill the 20 spots, he goes with it, if not, he will keep burger king, etc... spends .20$ a card to buy them, gets them printed for and ends up spending less than 1$ a card. sells 1000 of them a year, and brings home 9k in 2 weeks and 1 day of work by him. most of the mom n pop re up because its easy advertising. damdest thing I ever seen....i always did the card thru a place, they took 40% for first 500, 30% for next 250, 20% for last 250, anything over 1100 he took 10% and that was all. was great deal i thought til i hear this crap... lol

i saw one of these before. it was a measurables list, not in chart form. i copied it down and thought I still had it but cant seem to find it. was pretty good in terms of what your asking.
had a friend that was a HC for awhile. in the locker room he had cardboard cutouts for each position, in actual heights of d1 players, with weight listed on the body. each levels (d2,etc) he had a smaller body drawn on top of that cutout. took them to parent night so people could see what a d1-6-6 OL kid should look like in term of height. he said it always was a shock to people to see how big some players should be. I wanted to recreate it for along time, just never have.
going to keep looking for that measureables list I have.

this is exactly why i dont think you have clear cut rules/punishments together. late to practice=dont start friday miss practice=sit a quarter etc. each situation should be dictated on the premise that nobody knows for sure what is the 100% truth and some things are unavoidable. a couple years back our team rules were very vauge(on purpose) so that we could justify each negative action with the punishment we seemed to fit the "crime". late to practice=position coach will handle it 1 time, position group the next time, the unit the 3rd time, the team the 4th time, removed from team/head coaches discretion.
i honestly felt that this was the best in our situation. and will use that the next time I am able too.

....tell a kid you didn't want him to come out for football because you don't like him and his character? I've got a kid who is sneaky and I honestly don't trust him and don't want him around our team. It's widely believed that he is involved in drug dealing and other illegal activity although he's never been caught. Administration and even law enforcement are onto him. He's one of those smart kids who thinks he's invincible, above authority and rules, and that he'll never get caught. The "problem" is he hasn't been caught doing anything. Anybody have a similar issue? How did you deal with it? i would let him come to workouts and explain that workouts are not mandatory, but if you want to play you should be there. when hes there, its the toughest workout the players can handle. make him quit on his own. hold him accountable to be there, question why he isnt there. if you can get a ball out, put him on the field and let the players abuse him physically and mentally. now,if the kid can ball out and take all that mental and physical abuse. maybe, just maybe, you could be what he has needed in his life. kids are in gangs, why? they need a sense of family. well isnt that what a good football program is? a family. we fight, argue, yell, hit, etc... but after friday night we are hugging and laughing about the win and hugging and crying about the loss. its possible he doesnt have that at home and needs something. maybe you could be the something...... cream will rise to the top, its true. true colors will come out in a test of adversity. i would test him and see.

Run the wing t!!!!! We are the only under center wing t team in our entire league. funny you mention that!!! so there are 3 teams that run flexbone in the significant area. 1 is a triple team, the other is a hybrid and the last is a triple team. 2 single wing teams and the rest are shot gun offenses. I go to a new school last spring and with having a wing T background, I think lets go wing T and sprinkle some 2x2 just because. we go red/blue and 2x2 all spring. beat a team(1 of the flexbone teams ironically) as they were not ready to see counter criss cross, belly counter, sally. literally scored 2x on CCC and 1 each on the others. it was awesome. my plan had flat out worked. fall games start and 2 teams(1 does single wing and wing t) decide to add to the puzzle and run wing t...... so friggin annoyed. lol i guess i should be flattered that someone followed my thought process(nobody runs it, way to hard to prepare for in 3 days). is what it is, i guess.

Since we don't do any competitive 7-7, how do you handle a team like us who runs a 3-5-3 do you allow it or does the team have to run a different scheme? as long as the blitzer is taking a knee at the los, as if he was coming, it shouldnt be an issue. its when that guy and the other 7 drop and its next to impossible to throw the ball as deep middle and short are full. of course DC guy acts like a jerk about it and says, "thats what we do on defense" gtfoh d bag.... its 7 on 7 which is really 7 on 5 if were being totally honest.... annoyed by the team that runs 2 man, but plays cover 3 all school year. its important to win a 7 on 7 tourney, but not teach our kids didley pooh. conversely annoyed by the empty team that runs wing t all season and no shotgun offense at all....by downloading an empty playbook from glazier vault and coaching from a binder of plays.... love playing, as I love to compete. but the travel teams around here(yes, I know) and those 2 things amongst others really makes me question why we go play.....

every year old wrestlers would come back to my high school, college or not, during the holidays and would beat up on all of us. it was a tradition, like no other. lol.
at my current school, the girls basketball team(who is really really good) every holiday break, former players(mostly college girls) will come and they workout with the high school kids and scrimmage alot with them.

Yep, got the videos on YouTube, parents protesting on both sides, admin not being straight with folks, mnew coach hired, fired after 1 game. It's been quite the ride for these guys. In my experience, coaches that get into this kind of trouble have gotten away with some bad behavior in the past. There was basketball coach in this state that got caught bringing in younger alumni that were/had been playing college ball for scrimmages over Christmas break. This is a huge violation of state rules and he ended up having to forfeit a ton of games. It didn't surprise me as the guy had been doing that for years as well as pulling other crap. I went to college with some kids that played basketball for him and he used to take the seniors out camping every summer and they told me stories of the booze flowing. They were a perennial powerhouse in the sport and won multiple state titles. Several players told me that they partied hard in the hotel rooms with the coaches and the parents after they had won a state title. So, I imagine the syrup incident was just the tip of he iceberg for the coach in this situation. He probably got away with murder in the past and just kept upping the anty. former players coming back and playing is a rules violation? really?

no 5 year plan, your probably out after year 3 if your not winning or have done stupendous things to improve the program. if you make it to year 5, your probably in the clear. if you can win in year 1, do it. dont think about year 2 or 3. play the kids that get you wins in year 1, growing the program is important, but you may only have 1 good shot at winning, dont waste it. at the same time, implement the lower levels, 9th and JV, the real backbones of the program-what you want the program to look like in 3 years.
ive never made it past year 3, lol. for 1 reason or another. i banked on getting a class of kids through the program before I really wanted to see strides(out with old, in with my kids type mentality). but by year 3 something has always happend(new principal or new AD or I did something stupid, lol).
plan for 3, revamp after 3 and make it 5, 5 becomes 10, but dont listen to me, ive never made it that far. hahahahaha

1. Weight Room 2. Seven Man Sled 3. Full Pads. Every. Single. Day. I agree with the first part whole heartedly. Being bigger and stronger leads to confidence which leads to physicality. I would also add in being in great shape. Nothing clouds your thinking and makes you soft like being tired. The 3rd one is the one I might disagree with. The 2 most physical teams on our schedule one has been in full pads twice, the first day allowed and the 3rd day, and hasn’t been in them since and the other doesn’t go full pads once the season starts. Both of them do go shells, 3 days a week for 1 and 2 days a week for the other. Both of these teams are extremely physical. I wouldn’t question the fact that these 2 would be among the top 5 or top 10 at worst, most physical teams in our classification. One is a perennial winner and the other has started winning with a new coach. One thing both of these programs believe in is an extensive strength program and have very good summer strength and conditioning programs. 1,2 100 percent 3, 95% kids and coaches do not know how to go shells and get an effective practice out of it, from the places I have been. shells always turns into the half assed days because kids think its a day off because were not beating our brains out. i dont know how you do inside/interior run game and get the desired effect in shells. what about goal line situational series or 2 pt play on competition tuesday for the win. plenty of times were so banged up that at 1 point you have to go shells when you dont want too..... but only 2 days a season? thats pretty extreme

I recently returned from a two-year service mission for my church, and during that time I didn’t keep up with much of anything in the football world beyond who won the Super Bowl haha. So, since the summer of 2015 have there been any major developments in the game of football? Rules? Culture? X & O’s? Has the Facemelter taken the world by storm yet? 😉 etc. I know it’s a rather broad question, but I’d love to hear anything you coaches got! some interested federation rule changes.. they are still trying to figure out what the free blocking zone means it seems... oh and no more pop kicks (idk what yall call them) on kickoffs (topping the ball and having it pop over the 1st line.)other then that.. just trying to keep the sport from going away entirely. did anyone know that the way around this rule---if you set the ball on the ground instead of a tee. you can then kick the top and pop it up. had a ref tell me that is how to get away with it. if you have a soccer kid taht is good, he can do it. we never tried it, as our kicker sucks fat sacks of bbq balls....lost 2 games in overtime this fall because he cant make a PAT(rushed the kick) or game winner fg(from the 1 yd line, in essence a PAT). hate kickers.

When do those systems go up? Jan 1? Yes. That is what Glazier President told me "Yes, if you buy an Entire Staff Season Pass ($479), you will have access to the nine systems starting Jan 1, 2018. Your Vault access will start immediately upon purchase and access to the systems will be available Jan 1." i just got on and was looking for it. lol. glad someone else did the dirty work. thats awesome. some of the content is great, but some is old stuff. glad they are updating things.

totally agree with what some are saying. we are base wing t offense. we do have a 2x2/3x1 package with the kids to be able to do just that. but im too multiple to be held down to the offense of the generation. anyways we get up big, im running the crap out of the ball, but not just going to stay with belly, belly g. im running the offense. i like 8 in the box, even vs JV kids. theres a hole somewhere in that defense. now if it was ugly, i would do just like someone said, 8 in box, im gonna go 2x2 and run bubble screen. save my kids some. jet sweep is always good too. hate coaches like that, were up 40, just play base and get off the field.
in a kick off classic/week 0 game, my 1st year as head coach I scheduled a team that was pretty good, we were loaded too so it was a good test for both. we put 28 up the first half and the consensus all week was to put JV in for the 4th quarter. since we were up 21 in the 3rd, i started putting in 2nds and jvs. they score real quick a couple times and all a sudden we were losing the game. varsity kids got pi s s ed off. so i put them in for a series( to take the lead back), but eventually let the game end. point proven to everyone.

I resigned from my HC job last spring after having some great success at my school. Wife and I are having #2 and needed to help out more. Just accepted a new teaching position at a very good football school. Very excited to get back after a year off. The schools couldn't be anymore different. My current school, very little talent exclusively option. The new school packed with skill talent spread. This one will be interesting. Moving back into an assistant role will be different. Any guys out there make the transition from HC to position coach. Advice? a year ago in the spring l i transitioned back to an asst role, was going to do RB and help a 1st year head guy get his feet wet. he knew i had some time in the big boy chair and wanted to really lean on me to help. fall practice rolls around and the DC had to take a leave, he asked me to be the DC. hadnt done Defense in a long time. but being a HC and OC for so many years, I know what gives me fits. so i jumped at it. had a great year and i think i took alot off his plate. moved on after the season, we both did actually. new school back to OC was fun year and got to really do some good things, teaching kids to play ball and not worry so much about all the BS that is in being a HC. im telling you now, the best job in HS football is a coordinator role. your the head coach of your unit. if the HC is someone who will let you do what you want, its by far the most enjoyable job out there. none of the BS HC duties, and you know that list is endless..... have fun, when he asks, give your advice-right, wrong or indifferent- be the guy you wanted on your own staff, that will argue with you in the office and get on the board and yell and cuss n spit, but is your go to guy on the field to get stuff done.. enjoy it!!!

when this started last year, I asked any player that wanted to kneel, if they could give a legit argument as to why they were kneeling, i wouldnt be upset. i dont like it, but if you can argue the point as a 16-18 year old as to why, then i or anyone else wont be allowed to say you cant. we had 3 kids that held up fists, but no kneeling. was interesting that 2 of the kids did that because the other 1 did. that boy in particular gave a great explaination as to why. they following week. he didnt even do it. felt as he was being disrespectful to the coaches to have to answer to the principal for his actions.
my take is this, what are you protesting? why? and how much of your kneeling is going to affect people at a high school football game? if 2500 people saw you on a knee is that going to change their minds on police brutality or the racial injusticies that live in the US today? probably not. and do you want the boo birds in your ear and even more so do you want to create more division amongst teammates? and what about the ramifications that it imposes on me, as your coach? what if you doing so causes issues at the college you are choosing/choosing you? maybe they stop recruiting you because of it? lots to think about...
