I coached at a school for 9 years that did 2 hours a day for 4 days a week. One reason I walked away from coaching is because new coach wanted 4 hours a day for 4 days a week.

Loyalty comes first. You can always coach them up and make them better coaches.

We are graduating 9 starters on offense. Our second string scored on multiple teams this past year. That second string is now our first string. With the success we had this past season with our second O, I am feeling a lot better than I normally would have.

I know this issue has been discussed before but I recently discovered that 2 coaches really hate me for throwing the ball late in the game with a big lead. I am very unapologetic for it because each of those teams were playing with 7-8 guys in the box and brining pressure vs our JV O-Line. Simple math and player safety dictates we should throw and throw quickly to protect our QB. It would be suicide for our RB if we ran right into that brick wall which they would have deemed as the classy thing to do. I'd much rather have then opposing coaches feelings hurt as opposed to my players getting physically hurt. And besides our QB is trained to throw the ball when the box is loaded. What are we supposed to do? Run your offense. If they can't stop your 2nd string, that is their fault. Do not stop coaching just because the 2nd string is in the game. They have the right to score just as much as the starters. Now, just don't run any trick plays. Run the basic plays you have been running since the first week of practice.

I am always looking for better ways to do things. There is nothing wrong with tweaking what you do. Going to clinics and talking to other coaches is something I really enjoy doing in the off season.

Been there done that twice. It sucks. All you can do is take the players who want to be there and make them the best they can be. I would rather coach young men who want to be at our school than coach someone that would rather be somewhere else. Also, when those players were done playing at the bigger school, the schools that were recruiting them when they played for us were the same schools that recruited them at the bigger school. Going to a bigger school did not help them one bit.

We do two a days for the first 4 days of practice with an one hour break between practices. We have one practice for offense and one for defense.

We cut plays, concepts, and formations out based on the talent at hand. We have not been pure 4 wide in 5 years. We are now running 21 personnel with an HB and TE. We dumped power read this past year because we didn't have the QB to run it. We dumped RPOs 2 years ago because our QB wanted to make all his decisions pre-snap no matter what. We dumped the Oregon midline out of the gun for the same reason. If we have the athletes that can run these plays, concepts, and formations, we will bring them back, but until then, they are out.

We fill up our non-district schedule with local rivals that are not in our district. If they will not play us, then we schedule teams from a nearby district. We schedule teams that we have not seen recently. We scrimmage one of the top teams in their classification and a school in a larger classification to help prepare us for the regular season.

We don't two platoon, but why not just have offense and defense practice each day separately? If a player plays both ways, they could do offense on Monday, defense on Tuesday, and split time on Wednesday.

I think that it is very important and not as easy as some might think. The best thing that I have done is to number the skill positions 1-5 on your play cards and then assign a number to each of your scout backs so there is less confusion on where to line up. That is always our biggest problem. Not lining up or not knowing what route to run so I try to number the backs when I can or point to each position and say a name when we are in the huddle if I didnt have time to number them... I hope this makes sense We do this, and we still have players that cannot line up right or run the right route. This drives our DC nuts.

1 hour during the regular season. Post season is a different animal. The last two seasons we have had 5-6 hour bus rides in the playoffs.

We take Monday and Friday off. We go light Tuesday-Thursday. We sit out any players that are banged up, give our back-ups more reps, run more, and we start put-in for next week's opponent. We also cut practice back 30 minutes each day. We would have one day of offense, one day of defense, and one day of defense, offense, and special teams.

Tell them, we don't play at crossfit. Also, we take role of who is at weight training. If they go to crossfit, count them absent. If they are fighting it out with another player for a starting job, pick the other player.

Our JV works out and practices separately. Our weight room is to small, and we have to many players to put them all together all the time. The problem with this is that to many of our JV players come to varsity with poor basic fundamentals.

What Wisconsin is doing is stupid. When I was in high school, we tried to emulate Duke's student body at all basketball games. Our house was a tough place to play, and our head basketball coach loved it.

I have always wondered if it would be better for small schools to have a freshman team rather than a jv team. Have the sophs play varsity, and let 8th graders play freshman ball.

One year we had a two exchange students. One from South Korea and one from Germany. The Korean player ended doing kickoffs for us. The German player was a back-up lineman.

Yes, but it happens more at the JV level than at the varsity level. When it does happen at the varsity level, there chances of playing are pretty remote.

Our best season came when a bigger school recruited our TB away from us. We replaced him with another TB who ran for over 2000 yards. In the end, I am glad he left. It brought our team closer together.
