The simple answer is that our AD does with input from the HC. But it's not that simple. The state athletic association establishes our districts. That establishes 5 of our 8 regular season games. The other 3 games are almost always league games. The league has a matrix that determines which teams will play each other. In the event we have to find a non league game in the first 3 weeks, the HC and AD try to find a game. In 20 seasons I don't remember playing a non league opponent in the first part of the season though.

How about "The game doesn't end just because the clock hits 0:00". We had a situation last year where we took the lead with under a minute to go. Our opponent got to about their own 40 with just under 20 seconds remaining on the clock. They threw a pass to our deep safety. He intercepted it and ran around until the clock hit zero and just dropped the ball. He didn't take a knee or get tackled. He just dropped the ball. Luckily the other team just jumped on the ball instead of a scoop and score. Game over. We won, but now a must teach for us.

Friday night our opponent was called for pass interference. They stepped off 10 yards from the LOS and set the ball. I politely (no really) asked the official in front of me if it it was PI? He said yes. I said that is a 15 yard penalty. Luckily the chains had not moved. He turned and looked and said "We moved it 10". I said "you sure did, but its a 15 yard penalty". He yelled out to the WH who said "No, it's 10 yards". I responded with "No, it's 15". He replied " Your right, its 15 yards and automatic 1st down".

our players have their uniform numbers on one side of their helmet. Due to injuries, we are possibly moving an OL to TE/FB. we would like for him to have an eligible number. Is there an issue with him having #50 on his helmet but wear #88?

Our staff was talking about the extension of the team box to allow for social distancing. Someone asked the question "why didn't the box extend farther toward the end zone anyway?" Does anyone know why the team box went from the 25 to the 25? Why didn't it go from the 10 or 5 hard line?

In Kansas our State Championship games are on the Saturday after thanksgiving. 8 classes play at 7 different sites. The only classifications to play at the same site are 8man d1 and 8 man d2. Currently none of the State Championships are held at KU or K-State ( and haven't for at least 15 years) This year 3 are at NCAA D2 schools, 2 are at school district owned stadiums, 1 is at a JC stadium, and 2 at a NAIA school. We practice 3 weeks, then play 8 regular season games. Depending on classification, week 9 is either a playoff game or a meaningless consolation game between the 5th and 6 th place teams in the district. (Every team is guaranteed 9 games). State championship is game 13. That kind of sucks...the best part of some of the states is that everyone from the smallest to the biggest school is in the spotlight for their State Championship game when they are all at the same location. It does suck. Crazy thing is our State Track and Field championship is held at the same location over 2 days for all 6 classifications. 3600 athletes competing. I have seen it suggested that our State Association work in conjunction with a few other organizations to install turf at Cessna Stadium, the former home of the former Wichita State football team, and host all or most games over 2 days there.

In Kansas any team with a grade 9-11 enrollment of 99 or less can play 8-man.

Spend the money and get a coach bus.... We had to beg to get the school to buy us a meal after the game. We ended up stopping at a high school field about 2/3 of the way there. Their HC met us there and opened up their locker room and let us do a walk-through on their field. We were there about 45 minutes or so.

We play a road playoff game this Friday. We will travel a little over 3 hours in a big yellow school bus. This is about double our normal road trip travel time. We had one playoff game of a similar distance last year and we stopped one time for 10 minutes to use the restroom. That wasn't the cause of our loss, but I'm sure it did have a slight negative impact on us.
We have a little over an hour built in to our travel time. We are planning on stopping about half way there, but the question is what do we do once we have stopped.
The temperature should be in the low to mid 50s with no precipation during our travel. We have talked about just finding a place to get out and let them walk around for a while, doing a walk through, or even doing some easy jogging/stretching. What have any of you done that you feel has benefited your players mentally and/or physically on a trip longer than they are used to.

We won. No one froze to death. Serious question though. The spigot on our water cooler froze up by half time and our water bottles froze in the lids. Couldn't drink from them. Any suggestions for the next time it is this cold so we can drink during the game?

I agree. That is why I don't want them to put on too much during pregame so they don't get to sweaty. Then when they we go in right before the game, they can put on a heavier undershirt for the game.

We will be playing a playoff game Friday. The temperature is supposed to be close to 25 degrees at kick off. This is by far the coldest game any of our players have played in. Besides not making a big deal about the temperature because both teams are playing in, what are some tips you can give for playing in cold weather games.
I was thinking about not letting the players that probably wont get in wear too much warm gear during pregame warm up. They will sweat and be cold the rest of the game.
Thanks

Grades

Our eligibility policy is a point of contention between the coaches and the district Administration. Our policy is more strict than what the State of Kansas requires. We have a grade eligibility check every Monday. If a student has one F, they are placed on the ineligible list. If you are ineligible, you can not practice or play in a game.
The first time a students is on the list, they get a 1 week probation period and can practice and play. The next time they get on the list, they are ineligible and cant practice or play. As soon as a student gets their grade to at least a 60% they are no longer ineligible.
We don't mind holing our athletes to a higher standard, but we really hate the fact our athletes cant even practice.

We have a turf field that was installed about 6 years ago. Twice, during a heavy rain, the turf bubbled up several feet. It loooked as if someone was inflating a large balloon under the turf. Has anyone else with an artificial turf field experienced this?

I would love to have a portable massage table, but the school probably wont buy one. I will probably go with the SUV if I don't come up with anything else.
Thanks for the Ideas.

I need some ideas for a portable taping table. We are limited on space in the vehicle. We have 1 SUV and a bus. We don't have a trailer. A few of the schools we travel to have small locker rooms that are not near their gym. We will use their bleachers if they are available. If there is free bench space in the locker room we will use that.
I have thought about taking one of my fold up chairs and using the cooler of ice to prop up their leg. Just looking for ideas.
Thanks.

Well, And expect other team's coaches to respect the game and control their players. I'm not sure he was going to say anything until our staff stepped in and defused the situation. And yes, winning fixes a whole bunch of problems.

We lost a close game on hour home field which was essentially for the district title. The game was back and forth and they won by 4. While we are shaking hands after the game their best player, who we had a hard time stopping, told several of our plays "you can't stop me" and "I own this field". I can't say for a fact that my players didn't say anything, but I didn't hear it if they did, but I did hear what our opponent said. Before I even got to mid field, they are placing their helmets on our paw print. I get to the middle of the field and their cheerleaders have given their flag to a player who is getting ready to "Baker Mayfield" it. Our players see it happening and start making their way back to the middle of the field. Luckily cooler heads prevailed and he didn't try to plant the flag I our turf field.
I have been at this for a while and have seen some bonehead things, but this may take the cake.

We have an artificial turf field. We play our games and practice on it. We always have several players that get burns and the sores seem to last forever. Looking for suggestions to prevent the turf burns, protect the sores, and speed up the healing process.

Mustard helps when they feel they may start to cramp. At night if they will eat a handful of cashews or drink some tonic water that will help from cramping at night. Drink a couple of big glasses of water when they get up in the morning. Keep drinking water through the day till their pee is light in color. I have always said to drink until your pee is clear. Very few ever get to that point, but that is the target. In a perfect world they would drink until their pee is pale yellow.

Plain potato chips have more sodium and potassium than Gatorade or Powerade. Trade the sugar for some fat. The best thing is to hydrate like crazy before practice.

We have a very young team. We only have 2 seniors on a varsity roster of 40. While there is no for substitute for experience, we are looking for game scenarios to review with our team.
Here are a few we have come up with.
1. Blocked kicks/punts that don't cross the LOS can be recovered by either team.
2. Backwards passes are live balls.
3. Getting out of bounds to stop the clock instead of trying to get an extra yard or two during a two minute drill.
4. You can't advanced a muffed punt
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

One coach in our league, who also was the last coach to get hudl, would record his games in 4 clips. One clip per quarter. Every time out and stoppage in play was ion the video. I think one time we even got the half time show.
