In our second round playoff game this year our DB coach picked up on depth of WR and whether or not the play would be jet sweep. If he was deeper than normal it was 100% jet sweep. So we made a call for it and used it in the game.
Side note: we got crushed and they went on to win it all.

Did it for two years. It was a great experience. I had an opportunity to move to a better area and program. Haven't looked back but still keep in touch with some people there.

Focus on being the best high school player you can be right now and enjoy it. You have the rest of your life to coach.
Play in college if you can. Walk on if you have to. If you can't, find a school that will allow you to be a student assistant and take that route.
Learn all you can from your current coaches and develop great relationships with them.

Lots of good stuff said already. Love the post on culture, pretty much sums it up. I'll add some things a little more tangible:
1- Great weight program. 2- Simple, sound scheme that is coached well. 3- Good players.

Been around option football for a few years, not out of the gun though. We run a 42 defensively. I think it's relatable to 43 stuff. I have been a part of a 43 team in the past. Love to talk ball. PM me. If you're not out if the gun, your contributions to society are utterly worthless, I'm afraid. Even worse, no RPOs! Oh the horror...

We went to navy. The clinic itself wasn't all that great but the guy who recruits our area and several of the other coaches treated us really well. Gave us access to tons of film, etc. And as a history guy it was unbelievable touring that place.
Before I was on staff here some of the guys went to Wofford. They said it was amazing. Pretty sure we are going back this year.

We have a head coach plus 7 full time assistants. 4 of those 8 do JV/frosh as well. We are a private school in the smallest classification in our state.
We also have two volunteers that don't coach but do other misc. stuff...get back coach, blow the horn at practice, greet officials, etc.

Our starting QB got frostbite on his non throwing hand this year. Frostbite.
I'm going to bet I'll never see that one again.

A guy I used to work for only put on pads on gameday during the playoffs. Like Rudy said, keep them fresh. You have a playoff team, don't want to do anything stupid and get anyone more banged up than they already are.

I'm 27. I've made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot in my 5 yrs. coaching. My advice to all young guys: Talk less, listen more. As the old adage goes, you've got two eyes, two ears, and ONE mouth for a reason.
Something I think we should add, never...NEVER coach another coaches players. Big no no.
As an aside...I yelled at an official once (I was 24 at the time)...the HC had a few choice words for me and our "conversation" (which consisted of him berating me for a few minutes and me saying "yes sir") ended with me standing behind that white line with my hands in my pockets the rest of the night. Looking back, it's hilarious and I'm glad I learned that lesson. Come to find out, the HC and said official had been acquaintances for longer than I had been alive, and as it turns out he was the best official we would get all year.

Our HC does the laundry every day. We assign a different group of kids to clean the field every day. The staff will stick around and chat for 15-20 mins (or more or less) about whatever we need to. Staff rotates on who has to stay and lock up--we have several coaches with kids in little league games as we are dismissing practices, so I'm usually the one who locks up. I'm eating dinner with my wife by 7:30.

Coaches, I was curious how much time you spend and what you discuss during the week meeting to discuss all 3 phases of the game during an in-season week. We practice the following: Monday: O Tuesday: D Wednesday: Split Thursday: Walk-thru Special teams is everyday. We meet nightly for anywhere from 1-2 hours. Wolfden What do you meet about for 1-2 hours?

Agree...I heard it with Cortez. The message is commitment...no turning back. Losing is not an option. If you want to get back home, you must win. I see that, but ..Losing IS an option. In fact, in situations where you are looking for this kind of motivational edge, losing is a very realistic if not probably outcome. From my personal experience as a player in a below average to weak program, hearing all that stuff and then losing really does just drive you deeper into the hole. "Loosing is not an option"...and you start 0-2. To a 15-18 year old kid, that is not necessarily easy to process. I'm telling you what the message of the story it is. I think there are times when that sort of message is appropriate for a football team...but not when (like you say) losing is the probable outcome. Have to be smart for when you deliver certain messages. If losing is the probable outcome, then some great motivational story ain't going to do the trick anyway.

So, you looked great at the beginning of the year...had a "real good shot at the district title"... and lost your first game Friday because your best player quit...why is this the fault of your scheme/OC?
What makes you assume you won't make the playoffs after losing 1 game? Is this the OC's fault?
"How do I handle this?"...is it your problem to handle?

Long drives have always interested me. As a player it wasn't uncommon for us to take 8 or 9 minutes off the clock...it was something we took pride in. Nowadays with all the up tempo it seems like this has become more and more rare.
From what I have read, one of the longest drives in modern NCAA history came from Navy in the 2004 Emerald bowl, when they took almost 15 minutes off the clock on a 26 play 94 yd drive.
Just wondering what are some of the longest drives you all have ever seen or been apart of (in terms of time off the clock and/or number of plays).
Looking forward to hearing some good stories.

My wife played collegiate softball, coached high school softball and basketball when she was finishing up her nursing degree. Now works full time as a nurse, I think she secretly wishes she could coach again. I've encouraged her to pursue it. I was coaching when we started dating so she understands the hours, commitment level, etc. She is extremely understanding and encouraging. She embraces being a coaches wife.

This is all eerily similar to the heat policies issued a few years ago. It's a good policy with good intentions. The state associations however don't give a rip if you follow the rules or not,as soon as a kid falls out though its our rear end and not theirs.

Sounded to me like a lot of people are going to walk the line of what is considered a predetermined winner in a drill. If they have the ones beating the scout team and the scouts not tackling to the ground they don't consider that full contact. That sounds like a fine line to me, at best. This is the main issue to me. What constitutes a pre-determined winner? Just like you said, if our first O is out there (who is obviously always going to be the pre-determined winner in practice) vs the scouts, and the scouts aren't tackling to the ground, what's different from that and a thud period? I think all of this will amount to teams continuing to have "thud" periods like we always have, but naming them a "control" "pre-determined" winner period because it's 1s vs scouts. In essence changing nothing. It just goes to show that state associations really don't care what you do or how you interpret the rules, they just want liability on us rather than them.
