We go straight to bags. Got 2 sets of 4 bags laying on the ground and the kids split up in 2 groups. Sr's in the front. About 3-4 minutes of that then form tackle for the entire team. May take our offense while form tackle is going on and work on 2 minute offense. Then we go into Ext.Pt FG-Gline offense after that. Defense will have a teaching sessions with all that are left over at the other end of the field. After that we may go into some sort of team physical drill. No form run until practice on Thursday which is just a run through in the morning. We do form run before the game on Friday. No stretching at all unless it is in class. Stretch is mostly in the off season or summer..

We had they same thing happen to us with the "M" situation! We were walking the field like you were and one of our kids says "coach why the got's a W in the middle of they field." Basically the whole team stopped and looked at him. One of them says "you idiot that is an "M". Warm-ups were a wash later with all the kids hollering "hey coach why they got's a "W" in the middle of the field? Broke the tension in a tough situation.

I am going to have our "injured" players carry water bottles and stay with their position group or coach. Got tired of seeing them at practice and supposed to be injured yet throwing the ball or some sort of screwing around.
I also want to buy some tackle rings. Used the shadowman dummies and they worked considering our contact limit we face. Hard to use when your numbers are limited and the time it takes to hook up a 5th string player to pull them. How did anyone that used the tackle rings like them? Seems simple to use by just rolling them.

The guy I get my plates from puts 2 sided tape on the plates so that they will stick to the felt. What else do you do for player awards?

Freeze that is what I do. I have helped cut the helmets before but like you said we drop the helmets off and come back in a couple of weeks to pick them up.

We strip the guts out leaving the facemask attached.. Using a "sawzaw" or reciprocating saw we cut it in half. Start from the back and have a person help you rotate the helmet cutting all the way til you are finished through the facemask. Our shop class makes the shadow box and they attach the helmet. They use felt for a backing to help decorate. We attach a nice trophy plate that has the player's number, position and so on.

That is exactly what we have done for years of the cutting in half and put in a shadow box with a nice name plate. Parents love them plus they look great in an office, local business or trophy room at home.

Get a copy of The Football Coaching Bible. Good read that teaches some basic concepts about the game from all sides.

Chris, How much do you charge for the rejected or out of date helmet? We usually use those helmets for our senior-4th year players award which is a helmet plaque that is cut in half and put in a shadow box that is given out at the banquet.

Does anyone allow Senior players to buy their helmet from that season? If so what do you charge? $250 about the cost of a new one?

I do enforce the rules that are set. Don't have a ton of rules but summer workout attendance is one of them that I do.
If a kid misses because of a death that is beyond excused in my book, the kid needs to handle his family and himself and take his time. A kid that misses just because he has no character or is lazy and doesn't show up is the player I have a problem with. Then as you guys say "you been doing this along time" well so have I and that same kid will let you down in crunch time during the season. He is going to get you fired by not playing him as you say ..... well then why not get fired with kids that have character.
Had a kid miss 5 straight workouts in the morning over 2 weeks yet was at basketball workouts at 2:00pm in the gym everyone of those days. I guess as you say let him come and do as he wants when the season comes around. Same basketball workout that I went by had 10-12 other football players at it that had been to workouts and practice that morning. He was no different than the others that were there. It is ok to old school today fellas. Make kids be accountable. I guess I am out of my mind.

So true Matt and that is the hardest thing. You have to stick to your guns so to say but as you lay the foundation to the program it will then take care of itself. Kids will know what they can and can't do. Tough at first enforcing the rule but great later on.

Common sense is the main thing. Death in the family we excuse the kid. Hospital or emergency situation we excuse the kid. Our rule is it is excused but you still sit the first quarter so that the kid that practiced that day gets to play. We then play the kid that missed starting in the 2nd quarter. Builds depth and makes you pay attention to the back up a little more during practice because you never know when a situation will happen. That is season practice.
Summer workouts are the same. Death in family or divorced situation (have a kid going through that right now) you do what you have to do to take care of your family but if you miss because of anything else we tell the kid he can be on the team. We give each kid 3 misses after that we start questioning his work ethic and character. If a kid misses more than 3 we tell him he is still part of the team. He can participate in all team functions once the season starts. He will be a scout team player and hold dummies. We make sure all our kids know this before summer workouts start. I have the feeling that the kid that doesn't workout and participate in the summer he will let you down some time in the season so put your time into someone else. I believe in doing things my way because if I get fired I can say I did it in a way I thought was right.
Funny thing people may say I'm archaic but I don't really care. Our numbers are sky high for a class A school and kids know the best players that work hard get on the field. QB missed practice the first week of the playoffs last year. Didn't play him. I still dressed him because if we got in touble I was going to put him in and not punish the team or the seniors for his actions. Had a plan to run him later if he had to go in. Many people hollering to play the QB as the game went on and pulled away in the 4th quarter. We won by 28 with a back up. People thought we should have won by more. Still stuck to my rules but wasn't stupid. You have to know the situation. I as far as summer I don't bend. They don't come they don't play but they are still on the team.

I will stick to telling my kids when and where to go and what to do. That is part of being the coach and having experience of knowing what is best for them. If they want to listen that is up to them. Definitely don't feel I am any better than anyone who walks in my office but when you give a man your word he should stick to it. The coach and staff didn't do that. Guess times are a changin"!
Love the clearinghouse idea,

Kid wasn't a measurable kid when it came to a "40" time but made plays under the lights and I knew that. Was a measurable kid on every other test. I know when kids can run and are special. This kid was slightly under when it came to a "40". They offered off of his film from junior year along with seeing him play live twice. I knew what was best for him and I also have the reputation of being they type of coach who doesn't just tell every recruiter that I have dealt with over the years that "I have 6 sub 4.5 forty kids or kids that are 6'4" when they are really 6'1". Won't lie to any coach so I don't expect them to yank my kids around because I don't yank them around. When they come in they know what they are getting.
Like your idea of if they offer the and kid commits it is binding. How would you do that? Is that the early signing period some people want?
The climate as you said is something I hate as far as being an old school coach. I had a kid one time that people wanted him to commit on TV at one of f those all-star games. Was basically harassed to do it by the game and tv people. Told me one day "coach I want to commit in the gym on signing day in front of the people who have seen me play on Friday nights." Miss those days and those type kids!

I am not ok doing business like that. Don't care who you are or what level you are on. Kid committed. They should have also. They said "we have 2 spots at your position and you are one of three we have offered. First two that commit we are going with." Then the kid doesn't run as fast as they thought he should then yank his offer. Don't agree with the taking the offer off the table. Commitment goes both ways is what I told the position coach.

What about a kid who gets an offer. Commits to the school. They talk him into coming to camp(one day camp for testing and competition so they say). Runs a slightly slower 40 but other wise does real well in everything else. Next day they pull the offer by phone to the head coach. Kid had the offer and was committed before camp and I tried to talk him out of going. I knew he wasn't a 4.5 so to say but when the lights came on was the best on the field. Had other offers and ended up taking one of those. How do you handle that situation?

I like what Coach said of "bury him on scout team or the bench!" Remember either way you are going to get fired! Fired for playing the name kids and not winning or playing the best kids and winning but making someone mad! At least go out with a winning record then they have to explain why the fired you!

Seen many a kid be a 4-5 star and can't play! JJ Watt was a supposed 2-star and look at him. The guys ranking them see "testers". Some guys test well and still can't play! Saw one close up this year and he wasn't the best player on their defense but he passed the eye candy test! Ordinary looking kids on the team played with more effort and heart!
One guy who gives out stars adds a star if a player gets an offer or commits to ND! How funny is that?!!!!
If I had a kid who was thinking of going to IMG I would tell him to go! I want kids who want to compete for a state championship. I do not want one who is basically giving up the high school experience of wanting to compete for the big one and lay it all on the line!

Situation is "homecoming week." Working in the equipment room one time after practice and as usual some of the kids stop by as they are waiting for rides from us as coaches or from their parents. We are working and doing some talking, shooting the bull to just cool off for a few minutes and a kid sticks his head in the door and says " hey coach we home or away this week?" Thought he was joking but could tell that he was serious by looking at his face!

Had a kid one time in a JV game that never got in. Didn't want to get in to be truthful! One game we were blowing a team out and we're going to get everyone in and this kid's time had come. He is getting ready and our DLine coach says " I want you to go to In for so and so at NG!" Kid runs on the field turns around and says "where does the NG play?" Coach says "just go line up over the ball!" Kid says ok and literally lines up over the ball, in a 4 point stance, with it under his belly. The umpire/referee by the football had just set it ready to play and looked at the sideline and stared at us! Whole staff was laughing!

We have "Competition Wednesday" in the summer. Different type of games team against team. Prowler push, hoop chase, farmer's walk(carring 2 kegs weighing 50-60 pounds each), any type of racing games and any other type of competition we can think of! Loser always has push up or up downs. Promote the winner but yet always promote character and effort even in a loss!

How many weeks?
How many days a week?
