I am sure there is a thread on here somewhere; but I’m struggling finding it right now. How many of you still do 2-A-Days? How many completely switched and dropped it for a single 3 hour practice or other option? What forced your hand? Or why did you make the change. This is a topic I’m debating for the upcoming season. Haven't done them since 2005 & it was the best thing we ever did. Team was fresher and ready to roll and had a breakout season. Never went back to them.

Penalties, turnovers, busted plays, eyeball test etc and they still win = superior athletes.
Preciseness, pad level, execution, etc. & they still win OR over achieve = well coached in my mind.

Senior year was 88. Missed jr season from a fractured vertebrae in 2 a days when I was blocking for XP. Massive dude came off the edge and somehow his knee met my L5. More on that later.
Senior 2 a days was a drought during 2 a days. Ground was hard and dusty all season.
No team camps. We lifted all summer and did conditioning.
Had the half jerseys and our game jerseys were not even a 10th the quality of our current practice jerseys. Had to remember to cut my fingernails every couple of days b/c the holes in the mesh were so big if you got a fingernail caught in one you would get a chunk of your finger nail torn off.
Had the old school flesh colored Jpads for my hands (no idea why, I played defensive line, you woulda thought somebody would have told me to take them off).
Water only, no other beverages.
Saturday VCR film sessions.
Back to the beginning, the reason why I bring up the injury. NEVER EVER EVER saw a trainer at a practice.
Fractured my vertebrae, had to walk in & find the trainer by myself LOL.
In this particular instance he was not in the training room, so I leaned against the training table and waited for him to show up.
I wouldn't trade any of it.

Going to have agree here. That is over the top. I read the post as saying the AAC powers-that-be didn't want Army if they were going to run a "contrarian" offense the current schools never saw otherwise. That's different than a "conspiracy to...direct another AD to order his football coach to not run a particular offensive scheme." Army AD-administration could have said no, thanks then. Or fired Monken and hired another Todd Berry, Bobby Ross, Stan Brock. Since those coaches did so well running more "conventional" offenses. I read it as the AD's of the conference coaches probably didn't want the headache of dealing with the contrarian offense and the Army and AD at army were saying, well we might be changing with the rule changes, etc. In other words, maybe Monken was getting similar pressure like KN at Navy & felt like with the rules changes, the new conference and KN getting heat, maybe this is a good time to make a change. I also wouldn't doubt that Monken is maybe thinking about future prospects and marketability. But eho knows, the whole thing is baffling to me,

Dude, do you honestly ever do anything on this board other than try to pick arguments? I have seriously NEVER heard you ask an X & O question or discuss strategy from the standpoint of trying to learn. I only see you try to cherry pick arguments with the sole intent of debunking what you read. Why in God's name are you so arrogant as to think you are knowledgeable and capable enough to play devils advocate to everything you read here? It takes quite an ego to feel comfy enough to do that w/ regularity. I have no idea why Army isn't running the flexbone when Monken has actually run it w/ the most success once this season and Monken makes the comment "felt like Army football". Somebody posited a theory and I found it interesting. Go troll another thread. Your antics have become boorish. Less than 2 weeks ago I asked you directly about the Army Trap/Midline concept. I started a thread about easiest blocking schemes, pros and cons of track blocking etc 3 weeks ago, specifically asking to compare and contrast those pros/cons to triple option schemes. What has become boorish are the constant posts regarding how foolish everyone else is for not running the flexbone/triple option. About how the coaches must be lying for their reasons given. Posts where a coach references a singular performance and says "see" as evidence but when countered with antithetical performance complains that such a comment is "just arguing" Posts where coaches state that football is essentially "dead to them" because of the offensive systems being run. Seriously...you are clapping back (as the kids say) for someone holding up a mirror and saying "Uh, guys, are we really suggesting that the athletic directors and coaches of another conference are forcing Army's AD to order Army's coach to not run the flexbone?" Particularly given the fact that they ran flexbone the entire CC game, which was after the deal was already finalized? No, boorish is the "get off of my lawn" vibe that seems to keep growing here. If it's so boorish, stop reading the thread.

But Army went for 365 on the ground in the "old system" the previous game and Monken said "felt like army football". Just don't get it. I'm going to beat the dead horse one more time, rather than change everything, why not add outside veer? I think it would keep the offense viable. Like someone said above, Harding dropped 55 in the D2 semi's and it going to the National Chip I believe for the 1st time (don't quote me) under the "no cut" rules. SMH Not sure what Army is doing. If Monken's comment "felt like Army football" then as the HC why isn't he running THAT offense? I don't buy his initial reason that the "no cut" rule will hurt the old Army offense. That was a diversion. The rule didn't seem to hurt Army vs. Coastal. I think it's deeper than that. I think it has everything to do with joining the AAC. I bet the AAC coaches/AD's weren't too thrilled with playing the "old" Army offense forcing the Army AD to negotiate with Monken in making some changes in order for the merger to happen. In this day and age of entertainment steering "financial" considerations that seems to be more of a "reason" than a rules change. That's actually pretty insightful. Good take.

Our Monday is jv. Half team is gone. Not much contact for varsity. Tuesday and Wednesday only days really to hit. Thursday is run through. Same. Furthermore, we have JV games on Mondays & our state rules are that they have no contact the day after a game so Tuesdays only non jv players can have contact. So Wed kind of has to be our day. Having said that, I feel contact in practice, at least for varsity is a tad overrated. Keep em fresh as often as possible. A boxer for example rarely spars HARD b/c you don't want him to get beat up, That's why they call it sparring and not fighting. I think the same mentality applies to football.

I maintain this game was clearly won upfront…..both sides of the ball Agreed. Doesn't make the system bad. IMO, when we as HS coaches get enamored with a system (Air raid, Saban defense, etc) we forget sometimes that HS & college are like apples to oranges. These guys have D 1 talent & it's not going to always look the same from one level to the next. THEN.....on some rare occasions, like this one even D 1 talent is clearly overmatched and we get to see first hand that even these coaches don't have answers for what to do when that happens. That's why when I was a HC I always shied away from college programs & stuck with networking w/ successful HS programs w/ similar demographics to my own school. I felt that was always a clearer picture of expectations. Again, JMO

Has anyone at the HS level recruited your halls to find a few folks who are interested in the coaching side of football, and created a GA-type position for them (in this case a "Student Assistant" rather than a Graduate Assistant)? EDIT NOTE: As several mentioned in here, they would need to be limited to background tasks, would need to be limited to things like Coach.A mentioned: "-Breaking down film - Stats - Making scout cards - Helping set up & put away equipment" I absolutely think it could work & be popular if.......you could write a curriculum, get it passed and involve a grade / credit for kids. I think that would be a great opportunity for kids interested in the coaching side of sports. Especially maybe some females who traditionally manage the team. IDK about you guys, but I personally have those types of kids start strong and then peter out as they get older. This could be an incentive for kids to get & STAY involved as well as allow them to earn some elective credits. I think it's a fantastic idea!

What format do you use to grade players? What do you do if a player is under performing, but you don't have depth behind him? Thanks in advance. Where I coach now we go over film w/ the kids & they have their own grade sheet. We comment on it and they are asked to" grade" themselves. Reality is they are making their own notes of mistakes they made and need to correct. I like it. Not time consuming and encourages them to reflect on their own performance and put in writing things they need to fix.

Dang man at 6'1 275 you were a fkn monster even in your day (yes I know you are not THAT old just saying) I'm in a lot better shape now than I was then. Much stronger, better cardio. I wish I knew then what I know now. Heck, we never even squatted when I was in HS. My lower body was kinda gooey. I always wondered what would have happened had I been born 20-25 years before I was. Funny you should say that. I played in the 80's, was so so size for that time period as a DE. I was 6'1 about 205 - 10 ish. But man could I squat! 445 lbs...until....I started coaching & realized we were never taught anything. All my squats were quarter squats & I realized our whole teams squats from HS was all BS LOL.

I was defensive MVP & all conference in HS. I was above average on a mediocre high school team. My brain & ability to use leverage was my strong suit & helped me quite a bit.
I was always interested in the cognitive aspect of the game.

My personal opinion on this matter is it takes discipline not to use those words when frustrated, conversing, etc. If we really push for our players to be disciplined I think curbing there language is one tool to do it & it shows we practice what we preach.
Having said that, I don't think it's the end all be all sin in coaching but regularity of that language at practice IMO just kinda sounds dumb.
It also is a reflection of the program in a game. Officials talk for sure just like coaches do & I think if one team uses that language on the field and the other does not, I believe in a tight game you could get a call go for or against when a play is kinda grey.
What I;m saying is, not against using it on occasion to emphasize a point but I don't think it reflects well when it's habitual.

Have any of you coached your on kid on the varsity level? I am looking for advice from folks that have been through it. I am his position coach. Not exactly what you're looking for but .....my son was a frosh in my program and I was the HC (retired at least for now). So, not as close proximity as you of course. But.....I honest to God tried to forget he was there and act as though he was just another kid. Obviously easier when he's on another field. Having said that however, he is not a football player and I could see it right away. He rarely played & I stayed out of it completely. Silver lining, he took up XC the following year and as a junior was XC MVP and captain of the track team. All this to say, IMO it's your job to coach your position and not him & things will work out the way they are supposed to just like they did for you. JMHO

Define “just wing it” in this scenario? Coach who doesn't know precisely what drills, and when he wants to do them, he is going to do prior to the start of practice. BUt he has a deep enough repertoire and general knowledge that he has them do useful work throughout practice. My thoughts on what you're saying here is these guys that know there EDD's and the kids are ready to go b/c they know what is expected daily of them? These guys might be semi wasteful of time however when a portion of each practcie is directed towards specificity of that weeks opponent?

Lombardi, Woody Hayes, Urban Meyer, Bobby Knight ring any bells? 😄 Lombardi is why i initially wrote in the last 50 years, although i think that aspect of his coaching style has been somewhat exaggerated. It sells better that he willed his team to win by fiery temperament than by having a good line and simplistic system that executed at high levels. I guess Hayes makes it in the timeframe, though just barely, so theres that. I dont know if i’d consider Urban Meyer as a fire-n-brimstone type. Knights interesting, he seems like he could be, but is he really any different than Coach K. Not as much a fire-n-brimstone, but more of a military type leader who wants to be harsh towards his players to establish his dominance. Maybe im splitting hairs here, but that seems different to me Not to hijack the thread but just wanted to mention that John Madden had an interesting perspective on VL. He said as a youngster he thought he knew football until he listened to a clinic talk with VL and he spent 6 hours discussing 1 play. Madden said that he realized how little he knew after listening to him b/c he never focused on the amount of detail that VL put into everything. As fire as Fire n Brimstone, I would see him as extremely disciplined and I think he expected the same from his players. But...that was a different era. The coach held all the chips then b/c of lower player salaries. So...I think he was F n B comparatively to today but I don't see it as a bad thing. I think he was more a father figure and they didn't want to disappoint him due to the fact that teams were more family than business back then as they are now. At least that's the perspective I've gotten from the material I have read / watched.

the only issue I see here is transfer credits. If you transfer "on contract" you get to keep all of your credits or some such thing. ? Whenever you transfer you always "keep" your credits at the university you are leaving. Now, whether they are accepted by the new university for a field of study at their school is a different matter. What I find extremely disturbing about the recent high profile transfers is the timing. Classes began at USC on January 10th, and QB Caleb williams registered around January 28th (according to espn.com) Now the article goes out of its way to say that he "registered registered for classes with his academic adviser late Friday, ahead of the school's final deadline to do so" Even with the MLK Holiday, if his classes were MWF He missed 8. If T Th he missed 6. Where is the "Come On" man shout when you need it. That's what I'm talking about. I'm saying not sure a shorter contract would work b/c many kids would fear a 1 year contract and if they leave will credits be accepted. Hence many might opt for 4 year contracts, which essentially becomes the same thing we have now. Hence, we're kind of spinning our wheels. Now on the other hand if credits could be protected, then some kids might agree to something other than 4 years.

yes... except the NCAA would then not be able to stand in front of courts and say that the participants were not employees. THAT is the point of no return that the NCAA has so desperately tried to avoid for multiple decades. Plus I would suspect that such provisions would be akin to "non compete" clauses- and as such the signers would look to be compensated for such things. Don't the coaches already have contracts? Didn't Lincoln Riley, Brian Kelly, Billy Napier, and Mario Cristobal all have contracts? Forget the word contract. The school and the student already sign a scholarship but it is good for just one year. Just have scholarships that can be 1, 2, 3, or 4 year long. If you sign a 1 year, you are free to leave after that year and go anywhere including signing back at your school. You could then sign 1 year or even a 3 year after that. If you sign another 1 year, then you are free to transfer or stay again. But if you sign a 4 year, you have to play there for 4 years. But you also get the security of knowing the school has to honor the scholarship for 4 years. BUT, you can still transfer like you used to be able to, BUT, you have to sit a year. This just seems like the most common sense thing. the only issue I see here is transfer credits. If you transfer "on contract" you get to keep all of your credits or some such thing.

Looks like loyalty, vis-a-vis the transfer portal, is a sword that cuts both ways. No loyalty from players, no loyalty from coaches. At least in the Pros, the players have a contract......... Hey, anyone remember me saying that contracts were the solution to all this mess. Sign a 1 year contract at your own risk. Sign a 4 year for stability and security, but now you can't transfer without sitting out a year. 2 and 3 year contracts also available. Sounds like the perfect solution to me. I agree with this IF......the coach can't drop the player once the contract has been signed for anything other than conduct.

Score. 100% of the time the team that scores more wins. I would be willing to bet a close second to this would be squat/dead/clean/press totals. While not is iron clad an indicator as score, I i’m fairly confident that teams at the high school level with higher squat, deadlift, clean and press numbers when far more often than they don’t. Yes both of our replies are somewhat tongue-in-cheek, however as is always brought up when this thread topic comes up on the board- are those other stats process or outcome related. I love to point out silkyice ‘s Great example of explosives being outcome based. One year fullback trap was his most explosive play I believe, the reason being is fullback was an SEC Signee. I am betting explosive runs (over 10 yards as defined in this thread) occur far more often to teams that have superior squat clean press dead lift numbers. All of the differentials referenced by jstoss above are far more likely to be “outcome related”. Meaning the bigger, stronger, faster, better players created those differentials far more often than they can be manufactured. In other words, those are things you see when better teams play lesser talented teams. There are countless examples of coaches taking turnover circuits during clinic season after leading the league in turnover margin one year only to find themselves quite ordinary the next. “Explosives” are far more often the outcome of superior athleticism/ability - which obviously will vary week to week. To piggy back off of this I would say speed directly correlates to all of this maybe even more so than the lifts you mentioned. I know the lifts improve speed but only so much. Last season was the slowest team I ever coached (fastest player on my offense was a 5.16 kid. Fastest kid on the team was a 4.99). So....to directly correlate...we never won a single turnover battle in any game. We had single digit explosive plays for the season, and we struggled mightily to cover on special teams. AKA we did not win. Pandemic really hurt us here. Talent either decided not to play or just weren't in shape to play. Was rough. Losing the turnover battle directly correlated to lack of speed b/c backs were easier to front up and hit directly, and receivers couldn't get open and on the flip side we couldn't cover or get a lot of hats to the ball to have one wrap up and the other punch out. Plus never saw game speed in practcie b/c nobody could give us a look.

Do to logistics and such, I have taken a job with our cross town rival and will have the same coaching position as the DC. For the most part there is excitement for a fresh start and an opportunity to coach with a couple guys I started out with 20 years ago. It's like we're get'n the old band back together for another run. The other part of me feels dirty, putting on those school colors will be something me and my family would never have imagined! I've never had any issues when it comes to building relationships with kids but I wonder is this will be different, at least from the start? The good news is, the rivalry will no longer be a thing due to the reclassifications in our state, thus the reason I agreed to take the position in the first place. Any of you guys ever dealt with a move like this? Any advice on what to expect? Am I overthinking something that will be a complete non factor with the move? Completely overthinking. With all due respect, kids will forget about it much faster than you will. We're all egocentric and get embroiled with what's going on in our own lives but none faster than a teenage boy. JMO.

Yes, we definitely feel like there is an arms race going on in our state. You say that all of our practices are too much yet the entire 5a has a similar practice schedule and the Las Vegas schools have been approved for 20 spring full padded practices. I don’t know what there is to do besides try and ramp up our program or keep losing games. What would y’all do to jumpstart a program? Would love to know what divisions you guys play in and what states as well as comments. IME, the clearer the program vision is, the greater the reality to the "less is more" axiom. In other words, when you know exactly what you want to do on O & D & ST's, the less time you have to "dilly dally" around with stuff. For example you KNOW for a fact that you have to have X # of plays and X # of fronts / coverages and you can spend all your time focused on that with the fundamentals that match that mindset, the less time you waste on experimentation as well as trial and error. Once you compartmentalize those things into a tidy package, you'd be surprised through repetition how much time you can save and allow kids to be kids. Again, JMO & experience. The less we do, ALWAYS the better we seem to be.
