Does your staff not all receive a pair of shoes that everyone wears for games? As an assistant I never received a pair of shoes. As a head coach if I wanted everyone to wear the same shoes I would have had to buy them and never had that kind of budget. That’s interesting. I coach in Louisiana and in the public school district I am in teams provide coaches with coaching clothes and shoes. I think that’s pretty standard for our state and always assumed that was the case for everyone.

Perhaps you might pay attention to see what this older gentleman is doing...you might learn sumthin Yes sir I did pay attention. And things weren’t getting done. Because there was no organization and no communication.

We have an older gentleman on staff who rolls his eyes about having a written practice plan and a written list of coaching duties. He says that his generation didn’t need written lists, they just did it. Am I crazy? I’m not a young coach, I have coached for 20 years at 4 different schools and have always had HC’s with written practice plans with well organized practices.

Buckets. Our paint machine clogs, but I think it's cause we don't mix the paint well enough. We use a 2:1 ratio (make 2 buckets out of 1 bucket of paint). Other places I have been have used 4:1 ratio and the lines were still bright; in fact, our paint salesman recommended 4:1. We have the black markers down on our field. And one of our coaches used the tops of the aerosol cans buried down for the numbers, hashes, coach's box, etc. Thought that was clever. He just sprayed the tops safety orange so it was easier to find.

If you have a gas powered or co2 powered paint sprayer that requires the bulk mixed paint then you just add the weed killer when you mix the paint with the water. Just make sure you label everything well. One year we painted an end zone by mistake with the roundup. The paint lasted in the end zone until spring!

We have done this for 5 years at my current school and my last school we also did it. The last 3 years we have done all the work ourselves so we get all the profit. We average around $5,000. Each kid has to sell 10 cards at $10 each. Don't contract it out. Just takes a little work. The hardest thing is tracking down the business owners for their authorization. Costs us about $400 to print the cards.

I am a new HC. We have a large number of old helmets that can no longer be used. What should I do with them? I know that in years past we have taken a sledgehammer to them before tossing in the dumpster. Not really feeling the sledgehammer this time. Thoughts?
