One thing I’m looking at doing this upcoming year with a similar situation is to practice the kid on varsity and play him on JV. He won’t get better practicing with the other JV kids because he’s going to be so much bigger and stronger, but likely won’t play if moved to varsity permanently. Who knows though, season is still a long ways away and he’s been out working my upperclassmen.

Returning Players get their number if they want it, from there it’s done by returning varsity based on workout attendance. For example the returning varsity player with the most days goes first if they want a new number (regardless of class) then it goes down the list of returners with varsity time. After that it’s new varsity players with most days, working down to least.

I said Other because i don’t want it returnable. Whether that means sky kick or dribbler at the OL on the front line, I want it unreturnable.

Got to get the "athletes" out and get them the ball "in space." But, the worst of these teams don't even try to get the ball to them. They just let the QB run traditional RB plays. I think the most galling part of to me is, as long as it's out of shotgun, the stupid fans don't make a peep. Now, line up in single back, under center and run the same play and they throw a fit about your dinosaur offense. Perception is reality, if it looks modern, it must be modern.

Sounds like my experience coaching middle school sports at one of my stops. It’s extremely difficult and it’s extremely frustrating. As you’ve noted they likely haven’t been raised at home and they have to learn somewhere. Do the best you can, praise the ones who do right and hold the others accountable. I have to remind myself this consistently, things are never as bad as they feel.

I was speaking more to sprinting through the bags with high knees, doing bear crawls zigging and zagging through the bags, sprint and backpedals through the bags.
I firmly believe in using them to learn how to work downhill on fits, or using them to teach angles when changing direction. I also believe that you don’t need a bag drill to work on agility in space, in fact I believe it works against you if you have strict “change of direction” locations because they learn the drill not the skill.
10-15 minutes of bag drills in Indy doesn’t make you a better football player, IMO it makes you better at bag drills, especially at the cost of technique in other areas. Many practice plans are set up 15 min for Indy, 15 for group, 15 for team. 10 minutes of bag drills and no key reads, no block destruction, or tackling is a waste of time IMO.

I don’t know what your practices look like but scrap any and all “bag drills” that are designed to condition and work on “movement skills” and replace them with key reads and reactions. They will naturally learn their movement skills by doing this and rep their reads and reactions.
Lastly minimize the amount of players that can be placed in a bind. If his key takes him “here”, don’t be pissed when he isn’t “there” on a once in a blue moon scenario. His reads should be clear and concise; if he does this, you do that with as few if/thens as possible. The more if/thens the more of a bind they are in, and the slower they play.

I think they’re dumb but the kids for some reason love them. Not a battle I would fight but I definitely throw some sarcastic remarks towards the kids that have them in good fun.

We don’t provide knee braces to players, that’s between them, their parents, and the insurance company. Knee braces are meant to be custom fit to the individual player, it’s not like a girdle that you can throw on and make work.

Don’t change the offense but find creative ways to increase touches or take advantage of specific skills. For example flexbone teams with a stud B back will add in B toss so he can hit the perimeter, B screen so he can get touches in the pass game, and waggle to get him outside the box on a pass route.
A stud center allows you to not spend another OL on a nose, so it affords double teams and pulls elsewhere. Move him around for a heavy look where he can pull, or let him pull from the center position in a heavy and kick on the nub side.
The point is, if you’ve got a dude, don’t be afraid to branch off a little to take advantage of his skill set, but make sure you still do what you do, don’t turn into a jack of all trades.

If they realize it….big if, it’s usually too little too late.
They need to hear it from the other parents and/or players if it’s not too little too late. Just my .02

As an OL coach I use a spreadsheet with OL jersey numbers across the top and play clip numbers on the left side. For each play you earn 1 (job done) or 0 (job not done). Highlight the plays that are “5 for 5s” (1s across the board). The higher percentage of 5 for 5s, the better the unit played and typically the more points you scored. The goal each week is to increase the percent of 5 for 5s each week. This is similar to what I do, but I also tally minus for a negative on the play if you negatively impact the play aka your dude was in on the tackle or you blew the assignment (doesn’t count against total grade but good to know). I give a neutral if they’re just there, didn’t really. They can also get a +2 for a pancake. Our goal is a 70% grade, you played well if you get 70%, 80% is great and I’ve never given above 90%.

I don’t see the problem, we’ve had to change kids jerseys mid game before for various reasons (blood, tears, number eligibility, etc). Takes more than a number to hide a stud….or a dud

Me personally I wouldn’t pay for it but I’d offer them a shirt. If they say no then I’d find a different skull and let that be the end of it.
If it’s something you’re going to sell to make a profit on, then I don’t see an issue with paying but I agree with the previous post about making sure you get all rights moving forward.

I created a google classroom and shared stuff through that. Can create assignments and when completed they can get goodies (ice pops after practice for example).

I give my guys ice pops after especially hot or hard practices, or if they really got after it. Some weeks they earn them multiple days. Only for OL and over summer also.
On Sunday for film, I get them doughnuts and Yoo-hoos

We were shut down for 2 weeks (one forfeit), rescheduled to play this past Monday, then got shut down again (Tuesday). Our next 2 opponents are currently shut down as well.

Extremely low for us, 7 seniors and around 35 in the program for a 4A school. Granted we’re very low income and we can’t get the freshmen to practice without school in session. We expect another 15 or so once school starts, but time will tell.

Be honest with the kids, tell him why and where he can improve. If it’s something out of his control (too small/slow), then don’t be afraid to share that also. They may get butt hurt, but they’ll respect your honesty. Just my .02

Depends on your needs, here’s a few places I’d go:
Weight room New Helmets/Shoulder Pads Redo Locker Room Replace sleds/hand shields Specialty equipment (sideline kicking net for example) Projectors/TVs/Smartboards for film sessions for Indy groups Pre-game swag for kids (dri fit shirts for example) Pay for a 3rd party to take care of fields (including painting)

I guarantee there’s more to it, we had a kid at our school at RB with talent out the wazoo. Started as a sophomore, produced very well; however was consistently late to practice (girl crazy). Skipped all off season workouts before covid (only plays football).
Skipped all workouts leading up to our covid shortened season, only came to practice once or twice a week. Lost PT and carries because of it, but behavior didn’t change.
Skipped all off season workouts and spring ball, then just transferred to a different school. We had been contacted by a number of D1 schools about him, including at least one power 5. He left because we were holding him accountable for his actions and having standards he was expected to meet.

Outside of the obvious “recruit the hallways” stuff, half field offense vs half field defense and tell them to bring a buddy with them. Once they realize how much actual football and less conditioning is being done, more should show.

If you’re looking into the X’s and O’s or the how to’s of a concept then your looking at clinic stuff.
If you’re looking into game day stuff (what the other team is doing, what you’re doing, etc) then I’d say film.
Clearly the answer is both, for me personally I take about a month off, then look at clinic stuff, then rewatch film.

I would be more inclined to change the offense than the defense for two reasons, number one I know offense much better than defense and I feel like I can adjust accordingly. Number two, it's very difficult (IMO) to go in and (potentially) change a kid's reads/reactions that he's repped for (potentially) multiple seasons.
Having said that, it also depends on the fundamentals that are in place defensively. I've been around d-line coaches before that didn't teach block reactions, their main emphasis was get off the ball, drive your man back, and go make a play. Needless to say, if this was how the defense was previously run, that would be #1 on the chopping block.
