Honestly, we've embraced it. It's too big a part of the culture to not do so in my humble opinion.

This is just all the more incentive to never coach defense.

We were fortunate enough to have just won a state championship this year and certainly never considered this. We sold merchandise (t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, travel mugs, glasses, decals - all that good stuff) but certainly never, ever considered selling rings to the general public.
It wouldn't cheapen anything for me as a member of the team but I'd just feel silly buying one as an outsider.

We've officially settled on Boston College. They've been very welcoming already - they're excited to have us! From the looks of your signature line, people should be visiting YOU. Congrats on your recent success. Maybe send an update on your visit to BC if your time permits. Thank you for the compliments - we've honestly just been blessed with tremendous kids. It'd be my pleasure! I'll definitely provide a thorough recap of our journey.

Hmmm. That's an intriguing possibility. I wouldn't mind visiting Orlando in March or April - plus, I have family there. As far as getting access, mikesmd77, most colleges are very, very receptive to high school staffs visiting during their spring schedule. We've usually gone to places where our head coach has some sort of relationship with a coach on staff - that definitely helps. But, still, if you contact the football offices and let them know your intentions they'll usually give you access. off topic, sfcoacho, but that was a great performance up( well, up for me) in Hershey! Congratulations. Thank you so much! It was certainly a ride that none of us will ever forget. We're still tossing around ideas for a staff visit. I think we have it down to Northwestern, Virginia Tech, or one of a few schools in the Boston area.

I'd love, love to go to Oregon. Just quite a hike for us from Pittsburgh though.
Honestly, we may end up back at Northwestern, haha. We're looking into Fordham, Boston College, and Virginia Tech as well. Chicago was just such a fun town (plus, the Pirates are playing at Wrigley the week we're looking to go - that sure helps, hah!).
Thank you all for the suggestions!

Well, we're a school just outside of Pittsburgh..the head coach and I are both Pitt fans. So about that...
Haha, in all seriousness though, I'm sure Penn State would actually be a great spot to visit under Franklin. He sure comes off as impressive. In fact, our original plan before Duke was to go visit Vanderbilt - our head coach has a connection to Franklin's staff. But, obviously, that all changed!
I think we're looking to explore a little more - we're pretty familiar with what Penn State has to offer.

Hello, friends! Just looking for a little advice from the crowd. A portion of our staff usually takes a visit to a college during spring ball and we're currently having some trouble thinking of a spot for this year. We visited Villanova two years ago and traveled to Chicago (Northwestern) last year. Both were tremendous experiences. We were going to do Duke as they're heavily recruiting our QB but their spring ball is in February!! Crazy. Seems like more and more schools are moving up spring ball to right after signing day. So, we're looking for a good school to visit - preferably somewhere in the East. Villanova and Northwestern were both fantastic - they gave us full access to their meetings, practices, film, etc. We're looking for that type of access - have any of you had positive experiences with any universities? Of course, we use this as an opportunity to take a little trip for ourselves. So, if you have a recommendation in a cool place that's all the better, haha! Thanks!! What are you looking for? What kind of offense and defense do you run? Well, those are both very valid points, haha. We're a spread, no-huddle based offense. We throw the ball a lot - rely very much on intermediate routes, our crossing game, etc. Definitely preach the 'throw short, run long' approach. We're blessed to have a Division I QB returning next season so that should continue to be our staple. I think we'll find something useful from just about any collegiate offense though. Defensively, we primarily run a 4-4. We're an aggressive, attack-oriented defense. We were fortunate to have a safety last year that allowed us to do so much with our defense. He was a senior but we have a solid replacement.

Good stuff!
We started making a 'movie' trailer as a season preview last year. It went over really well - kids loved it. Did another one this year as well.

Yes, overwhelmingly football coaches take themselves, the game and their programs WAY too seriously. Why? Football coaches have the ability to make a tremendous difference in the lives of anywhere from 40 to 70+ kids.

Well, I didn't see the updated version. That's tough.
Sounds like it'll be up to the respective schools though re: starting the prior week? I'd have a hard time imaging any school denying an early start.

I feel the need to reintroduce myself, haha.
I registered some time ago but never became particularly involved in posting. This board has been a tremendous resource though - I love it.
Western Pennsylvania native and I am an assistant coach at South Fayette High School (just 8-10 miles south of the city). I'm a young coach, working in the District and finishing up my Masters at Duquesne University.

You need to add Thomas Jefferson High School, Pleasant Hills, PA to the list. Consistent winner over the past 15 years including multiple state championships at the AAA level and even more WPIAL championships and championship game appearances. Agree with this. Thomas Jefferson is one of the benchmark programs in Pennsylvania at the AAA level.

www.pahelmetproject.comFantastic site for those in Pennsylvania! It not only has the helmet and logo for each team but quite often three or four helmets that a particular school may have used in the past. Plus, they provide you with an aerial overview of each teams stadium. Love it!

I'm entering my third year as a coach and I can soundly say that I've grown exponentially in such a short time.
I definitely made a lot of mistakes during my first year. I made a lot of mistakes last year. I am sure I'll make a glut of mistakes this year. It's enjoyable to turn those mistakes into positives as time goes on.
I was far too argumentative with the officials during my first year and that certainly didn't always provide a great example for the kids. I was overly chatty and, looking back, I'm not sure why an official didn't clock me once or twice. Definitely learned from that and greatly toned down the arguing this past year. Excessive arguing certainly had a negative impact on my ability to coach with a lucid mind during a game.
Being a young coach, it was and still is definitely a challenge to strike a balance between coach and buddy. I never actually had too much trouble with this but one or two kids always tried to take advantage of my youth and inexperience.
It was an interesting challenge during my first year to translate my knowledge of the game into a teachable format. I was always a bit of an on-the-field teacher as a player but it's obviously different communicating with a good friend than it is with a kid.
Definitely felt a little too 'power-hungry' my first year. However, I quickly came to realize that the absolute best approach to coaching is to absorb as much information from as many different minds as possible. No room for stubborn in the coaching business.
Live and learn!

Hello! Just registered for the boards and figured I'd introduce myself. I'm 21 years old and an assistant at a school in Western Pennsylvania. I was recruited to play DIII football at a prestigious Western Pennsylvania school but suffered a series of difficult concussions that forced an abrupt ending to my career. So, instead, I was fortunate to attach myself to an excellent program as a young coach.
It has been an absolutely amazing experience and something that I hope to do for the duration of my life. I have decided to pursue education (history) and will be attending a one-year graduate program to obtain my certificate/post-graduate degree.
Having said that, I'm excited to delve into the depth of knowledge that many of the coaches on here surely hold.
