Do any leagues do a media day where they interview all the teams and do a league preview with news papers or news stations come and interview coaches and players?

Another school in the south end of our city wanted to begin a rivalry game with us. They haven't been successful during the coaches tenure and was trying to have something to excite the guys and possibly have them play with a little more enthusiasm. Our schools mascots are the Spartans and the Celtics and we play for a sword. Their school built the sword and they haven't touched it since. I believe we have been playing for the sword for about 5 years.

Yes we do this. Hand them out to the 8th graders at the end of year banquet, kind of like welcome to teh program stuff. We also have youth night, plus we have the HS staff run a middle school camp, give them future cardinal stuff there as well. What do your shirts say? Are they just for incoming kids or do you just give them a shirt from the past year that the rest of the team had?

Has anyone done T-shirts for kids coming into your program? For example " Future Spartan Football Player" on the front or back? if so what have you put on your shirts? Have a family that has two younger siblings that will be coming to our school in the next couple years. Thought of starting some type of T-shirt for minor age kids that are going to be coming down our schools pipe line would be a neat way to spread the word about our program.

Do you have this cost included in your team fee or is this taken out of some budget?

natenator We no longer pass out flyers to the schools because there are many hoops we must pass through with the school board. Before we would just hand them to the principals and they would get them handed out. I know we have a grade 7/8 flag tournament that a teacher runs. Maybe you could try and get a tournament run through your association for earlier grades. Promote it to all the schools in your area. If all the teachers have to do is have a couple practices, book a bus, and follow the schedule I think they would be interested. This way you would be able to hand out flyers to all the kids there.

Not sure about natenator situation exactly if they run their own house league program then this would be viable but if they are playing in the OFL, OVFFL in the fall then he doesn't really have a choice. Here are somethings we have done or I thought might be able to gain some exposure for your association. Radio- get info out for registration via local radio Flyers- try to get flyers handed out to kids in every elementary school in your area for the kids that you are targeting to gain interest. Community bulletin boards- post flyers for registration, or possibly a poster about your summer teams to attract interest for kids that might be interested in playing. Maybe post something on kijiji trying to promote registration.

Yeah, we have hudl so doing a weekly game highlight package won't be hard. It will also save time when we want to create an end of the season highlight package. One of the other programs is doing an Instagram "commitment" thing where once a big name player commits to playing for that team they do a short write up on Instagram. Thought it was a great idea.

@natentor I'm just looking to make us look more appealing. Getting players to play for us isn't an issue.

@chi5chi I coach in Canada. In Ontario there are two leagues that run in the summer time. Our association switched from one league to the other. The league we are in now has no boundaries so players can come from any city if they would like to play for us. With that being said we gave up our boundaries in the other league so other teams could potentially recruit our players to play in nearby cities. The other league is thought of as the "premier" league for the province. (That conversation is for another thread) So with that all being said we don't want our players leaving to go to another city and we would like to look appealing for players for other cities to come play for. Of course winning is a great way to attract players. Since the head coach has taken over we have gone from having to forfeit games because of lack of players to being 7-1 last year and getting upset in the semi finals. We are on the right track program development wise. I'm looking to take the next step in social media.

Looking for ideas for how to market our program better via Social media. What are you guys doing via Instagram, Twitter, Facebook to market and make your team more noticeable?

brophy In Canada there are no paid coaches all our time is volunteered. we have 1 outside coach that does not get to practice until 4:15-4:30. We don't have Jr football in our city so no other coaches to use to our advantage.

I'm looking to find out how people structure practices when you only have 3 coaches? I believe we will have too have Offensive practices and Defensive practices to make the best use of our coaches. How do you guys run a weekly practice schedule?
This is our current situation. I am at a school of 2000 kids, just recently the DC has retired from the program leaving us with only 3 coaches presently. We have had coaches leave in the past to take Coordinator positions at other schools. We are a very successful program with winning 4 championships in the past 6 years. a lot of the success is because of the coach that is retiring. I am looking at different ways to run a practice to present to the coaching staff to make the best use of our time. If anyone has any experience in a situation like this and could shed some light that would be great.

Traditionally we had 12 or 13 practices before our first real game...but this year (for various reasons), we only have 9! I think that's crazy, I'm hoping our opponents are just as unprepared as us. Some teams in our league don't start before the school year. So they would only have 9 practices. Just depends on how many returning players you have that can retain the playbook

Our first game is on the 18th. We will have 12 practices before our first game. We will have about 7 in full gear.

What do you guys put on your coaching shirts for a crest. Do you just put the Logo? Do you put your school name under the logo? I've been put in charge of the Coaching swag this year and just looking for something new and different. if you guys could take a picture of your polo or post some ideas.

Coaches calling the players "Cats". I always get a good laugh when I hear that. All our players are calling each other Big Dawgs or Lil Pups.

I wouldn't be suprised if they got rid of kickoffs at the high school level. our high school league did this for two years. We kicked off twice in a game at the start and at half time. Teams had the choice to kick at any time but the kick was moved back to the 35 yard line. we would start on the 35 at the after a score. the league was split 50/50 on liking it or not. It was voted back in for next year after a two year trial. I didnt think it was that big of a deal some people thought it wasn't football.

As you know, I'm familiar with the league you coach in...have you ever considered not starting practice until closer to the season? The first games are at the end of May. Starting in February is just way too soon in my opinion and it will burn the kids out. Some of the players just finished their high school season in mid November. We don't start until April. We are the smallest population base in the entire league and we've been very successful in the league. I think if you hold off a bit and give kids time to recharge, you might find them more excited and enthusiastic when club football rolls around. Would have to agree with steelhawk here and try and start a little later. Not only will it help the kids it can help the staff from getting burnt out as well. Some of our coaches coach Club and then coach high school. It can become a blur at times.

My personal opinion is that there should be a certain number of positions held for players who can make these teams but lack the financial means to play. Right now it's pay to play. I wonder how many currently on the team could actually make the team if the cost was $100? I know our organization will help support the players that make the team and pay for a small amount of the fee to go to these types of things. Still doesn't help the Jimmies and Joes who's parents still can't afford to pay 500-700 to summer football plus 1000 these teams cost that they want to play.
