A long time ago my wife went to a game with me that wasn't the team I was coaching. She says..."everyone looks so slow compared to your team". We weren't necessarily fast, but played fast and furious.
Why that comment resonates with me is...I feel like you said BLB...that refs that ref two horrible teams...that get matched up with well coached teams...they have trouble. It's faster. It's better. And they either came into the game thinking it'd be easily or get confused when my lineman blocks (and buries a guy) all the way to the whistle. That's not a penalty...that's good football.
That kind of thing always chapped me. We get punished for being good at the sport.

We had a new ref a few games ago call an interception in our favor...our kid didn't have the ball long enough imo to warrant the INT call. I'll take the call for sure!
Nope...overruled by a different official. So...I'm not sure if I like "support the call is made". I understand refs cannot constantly overrule each other or the game may never end. What I would support is "getting the call right". I wasn't upset that they changed this INT to an INC...but my frustration is that other calls weren't/aren't changed when it's clearly the wrong call.

When I was an assistant coach I was stupid dealing with refs. Easily yelled at them.
As the HC I get to talk with them more. But I also get the feeling of people quickly. The ref Friday night gave me the "I think I'm the best ref in the world" vibe. Which scares me because they think they can do no wrong.
Then when this happened they had egg on their face and had to show humility. Which they didn't.
That's the part I don't like.
In the end...nothing transpired, but man, it was scary. I'm not happy still, but I'd be livid if they got the down over and got points.

What I'm trying to say is when you are not prepared and miss calls it feels like it's on purpose...even though it's not. It's more because you just aren't sure/don't know what you are doing.
Good quote by Noll.
I just feel our squad isn't good enough to pull away from many teams. Having calls go against us seems to hurt us a lot more because of the fact we aren't dominant.

I feel like this BLB...I understand the shortage. I understand being "new" on the job.
But what bugs me is not diving into the rulebook and attempting to be the best you can be at the job. It's a tough job, but really trying to be great makes people stand out.
I feel like coaches (all sports) put in so much time to do the best we can. And it feels like (not on purpose) that the missed calls are on purpose.
This kick thing is different for sure. But when it's a strange rule...get your rule book out. Take the time to get it right. It didn't hurt us in the end, but it could have be real bad.

The problem is-was officials who don't know the difference between an Extra Point kick attempt and a Field Goal attempt. Thing was...the side judge was the varsity white hat (this was a JV game). He was a complete prick. Just way too cool for anyone around. As he's trying to figure things out he says to me "the crew f'ed this up". While I appreciate that acknowledgement...it didn't help that his "awesome" crew didn't realize what they were doing. Don't come into the stadium acting like bad asses and then make stupid calls. Makes me really angry.

It was clearly in our dude's hands and then a whistle.

What sucks is that our team did two things correctly and still got the short end. We blocked the kick...and recovered it. The whistle clearly blew after our guy had the ball. But...NOPE. IV whistle...other team gets to choose what they do. And what, might you say, happened when the other team got to attempt the play over? While I'm yelling at the officials I'm also telling my team that the other team is going to FAKE THEIR NEXT ATTEMPT. I hate it when I'm right. They fake it...we have it covered...incomplete pass. If the other team scores there I might be in some bar still drinking.

I think this is total BS. Anyone help me out here? Well... hate to say, but it is total B.S.... and that was the right ruling after a mistake by the officials. In this case, both are true (you got screwed because some rules are dumb). We've had far too many inadvertent whistles in my day, so I was pretty sure I knew this one. The team who put the ball in play gets the choice (rule 4-2-3 b). I also found this... just checking to see if I was right before I posted (sometimes I think I am right, remember it to be right... and am not right): www.referee.com/protocols-for-inadvertent-whistles/Dang it Senator. But what about this part? "If a player is in possession of the ball when an IW occurs, the team in possession can choose to take the ball at the spot when the whistle was blown, or to replay the down (if all penalties are declined)." I see the part where if the ball is kicked the down must be replayed...but it was kicked and then we possessed it. I know some jobs are difficult, but when you work your ass off to play the right way and a ref makes a mistake like this...I can't stand it. Say "my bad" and I might care a little less.

I was under the impression that a blocked FG was a dead play after it crossed the LOS, but that's not an option in this scenario. A blocked PAT is immediately dead. A blocked FG that passes the LOS can be returned like a punt. This ball literally fluttered into our player's hands. He started to run...."beeerrrpppeeep"...whistle. Everyone stops. Definitely and inadvertent whistle...but the ruling was extremely bogus.

Help an old coach out. I'm pretty good at the rules...but this one...I need clarified.
Our team was attempting to BLOCK a field goal (not a PAT).
Here is the order of what happened.
1. Ball snapped and kicked 2. Ball is blocked. 3. Ball lands in the hands of one of my players about 8 yards down the field past the LOS. 4. As soon as the ball hits my players hands...an inadvertent whistle blows.
After the commotion that I bring up because we should be allowed to return it.
The referees tell me that since it is an inadvertent whistle the offensive team gets to "decide what they want to do". In this case...attempt to kick another field goal.
I think this is total BS. Anyone help me out here?

My first year ever coaching we had this wild kid that just played hard. We put him at DE and LB sometimes. We'd send him loose on the QB just because he went hard. Throw technique out the window...but it didn't matter...he'd make more plays than not.
One game Mike (his name...not position) isn't getting to the QB like he usually does...
ONE BIG HUGE THING I'M LEAVING OUT...MIKE HAS A LOUD BOOMING VOICE WITH A LISP!!! Take that into consideration here.
Me: Mike...what's going on out there?
Mike: (yelling loudly...arms out) I'M GETTING HELD COACH!!
Me: Don't let that guy do that to you
Mike: I'm trying coach...BUT HE HAS GO GO GADGET ARMS. They're just wrapped around me (demonstrating by grabbing us coaches and hugging us)
Imagine a kid with a booming voice and a lisp saying that. This happened 30 years ago. I still laugh every time I bring it up.

Just bought another pair of Hokas. Last year I never felt sore in my legs/knees for the first time ever. Hoka's suck up a lot of your coaching stipend, but your feet will love them. Now...for inclement weather I go with different water proof options.

I have a GREAT STORY...that turned into a serious dud of a story. And I told the kid this...
I'll keep it short.
Kid was lanky and not a good athlete. (this is a kid from this past summer). He shows up to some summer work outs. He can't catch (played WR). He's missing some mornings for the summer stuff. I tell him and his step brother that I will pick them up in the morning to get them to more practices. I'm helping this dude out a lot.
Kid starts missing a little too much. Mom reaches out to me about a toe injury the kid has. I tell mom that the kid has missed 8 of the 15 summer practices we have had. THIS WAS A SHOCK to the mom. She thinks he's at everything. Mom goes haywire on the kid. I told mom "kid misses one more day he's gone. I'm not putting in the effort anymore".
I thought, for sure, the kid wouldn't show up the next day.
Sure as {censored}...kid shows up. I tell him he's done if he misses again. He then decides to get mad at me because I told his mom that he was missing practice. THE MOMENT OF TRUTH LINE COMING UP....I tell the kid "QUIT LYING TO YOUR MOM THEN!!!!". I got right in his face. He's crying. I said...start being a man and grow up. Tell the phucking truth to people.
For sure he doesn't show up the next day. Sure as {censored}...he's there.
Flash forward...he doesn't miss again.......
AND...THE KID WHO COULDN'T CATCH...ENDS UP IN THE STARTING LINE UP!!!
Going the be the best "comeback" story ever.
NOPE.
We have a stupid "fall break" at our school. They get a week off of school. Well...it's during football season.
Right before the fall break this kid tells me he's quitting. Why? "I want to skateboard over break".
I phucking lose my {censored} on him. I said a lot of stuff I haven't ever said to a kid before that has quit.
In the end...he quit. Fine. Maybe he'll realize one day that someone actually tried to help. And that hard work WAS paying off.
Almost a really awesome story. Fizzled at the end.

Coach5085 and I haven't see eye to eye much on here. Which is totally fine and healthy...
But his takes on this thread...ARE EXACT!
I have been a public school lifer. And years ago I would want my children to maybe follow in my footsteps.
Now...I am mad at them if they even consider it.
For those who want to start the teaching/coaching process...good luck. I mean that sincerely. But the old tooth folk have seen the changes over the years and this {censored} is scary. I'd love to be the agent of change, but there aren't many like me.
I got BACK into coaching this year after 5 years off. Wow. The changes in the last 5 years are dramatic. And not for the better. I could find some positives. I really think kids (especially young men/boys) still need strong male role models. But don't tell schools that. Needless to say...I coach like I did several years ago. I get a lot out of kids because I'm demanding. I think newbies need to come into the game with an old school mindset. This soft generation crap is killing schools and football in general. My old school $.02.

What about stating, at the start of the season, that your team will have a NO DRAMA policy. Meaning...if the parents are dramatic about things either with their kid or on social media, etc. then the kid has a chance to be removed from the program.
Lay things down in front. And then be consistent. One of the levels of our program dealt with a mom who decided, on game day, that her son wasn't going to play because of the way he....WAIT FOR IT...broke up with his girlfriend.
Interesting story...I have this kid in class...well, did. He has now transferred out of the school.
We all deal with a lot. I am all for having a long discussion about removing kids if parents are out of control.

One day this summer 10 kids missed practice to go to the local fair.
I think I used 50 f bombs on the team the next day.
I hadn't used one before that and I don't think I have since.
A point had to be made. I wasn't happy with myself...but the point was made. Besides sitting those 10 kids for the first game.
I was bad...then I coached in a program where you just didn't cuss. Nobody did...it was just normal to not cuss. Then I started cussing under a different coach. Not much, but it was there. Now...I'm back to not. Reason being...just don't need any extra {censored} during my coaching experience.

One thing I have done is told a kid like that "he's never a starter" Every week he has to earn his spot. And when he acts like a douche you are in a good spot. I say..."see...that's why I don't have you in. You can't be trusted to pay attention". Made a huge difference with the kid I did that to this year. When he plays poorly...pull him out. Keep him out. When he's good and does "team" things...put him in. Takes work, but can be done.

Shameless plug. @rsrsites on Twitter. Need some graphics? Hit me up. I've been doing this since 2000. Have a messageboard that is older than Huey's with only 100 members. The diehards that keep it real. I'm 49 years old, but still trying to learn and grow. I can talk a little 425 D and some special teams. Not sure if anything I've used I've created on my own. But the chit has worked more than it hasn't. Proud Huey card holder since 2006.

My son plays for Montana Tech in the Frontier conference. I went to my first game ever last night in Butte. The football is good. Fun game to watch between Eastern Oregon and Tech. My son is one of the 3 players from CA on the roster. He loves Butte. I'm actually typing this while waiting for my flight home from Butte.
Anyway, both of my son's were recruited pretty good by D3s. Both had good grades, but going to D3s would have cost me a kidney each year. My son's tuition at Tech is extremely manageable especially with the WUE. He also has about a 20% scholarship.
It's working out good so far...except for that hiccup last year.
Differences? Roster numbers? Most likely. Ability to give scholarships (NAIA). Not really sure. Football seems comparable within the programs my sons were recruited by.

I'm on the interview panel for a PE/football/baseball coaching position. I believe under 10 people applied. I believe we're only interviewing 4 people. 10-15-20 years ago there would have been 100 applicants for this job and all of them probably really good. I'm not sure we're going to hire the right person after this. That is what is scary.
