I am very active on Twitter, with that being said I try not to take things very seriously on there. Too many trolls and negative people who only want to argue for the sake of argument. I will say that when you reach out to a coach via DM or specific content 99% of those coaches are good dudes who will answer your questions.

Did it already. Went from making 60K+ as a HS head coach to making 25K as a D3 Assistant. I felt I wanted to make the jump, felt like the right time and now here I am with a wife and kid on the way wishing I could go back to being a HS HC...grass isn't always greener and sometimes you have to make decisions that are best for YOU and YOU alone.

As a coach AND a Jew, I find this absolutely horrific and demeaning. The sad state of things is that this guy will probably get hired on as an assistant somewhere soon and he a HC again in the near future. How guys think that things like these will go unnoticed always baffles me. As for the assistants who allowed it to happen, they should all be ashamed of themselves, but I am sure they see it as innocent fun...

Coached one season in a small rural town in North Carolina
1. We did the normal fundraiser. Card sales, chicken plates, things like that.
2. Assistants were tough to come by. We found some young alum who were willing to volunteer and then had the couple guys who were in the building help out as well. I think in total we had 5 guys who handled varsity and junior varsity.
3. Off-season was handled during the day because we were allowed a weight training period. As far as athletics most of the kids played multiple sports so that was easily dealt with.
4. Recruited the halls as much as possible. It was tough but I believe we ended up with 40 on the varsity roster and around 30 for JV.

I've seen everything from bagels and Gatorade bars to orange slices and pretzels. I think anything is a good thing as long as they don't over indulge or eat heavy foods.

I stay as active as possible finding time when I can. I am a runner so I usually get up early and sneak 2 or 3 miles in. Then I will lift when I can find an extra 30 or 40 minutes. Diet is key, I have been intermittent fasting and eating pretty clean when I do eat. I am also a supplement guy. So I take my Advocare Spark in the morning and then have some BCAA in the afternoon.

In reality, in HS football it all boils down to your Jimmy and Joes anyways. I get tired of listening to clinic speakers talk about how simple their offense or defenses are when they have 6 guys that are going to the SEC.

I agree it can get a little out of control but I enjoy Twitter a ton. I run the #hogfbchat and we usually have some pretty good open conversations with very little arguing or malicious content. I also don't take too much too seriously on twitter and try to keep things as light as possible while still being able to speak my mind.

We have a new HC this year. Young guy. Week 2, we are playing one of the second-tier teams in our league. They just aren't very good and we are loaded. We are way more talented. We should be blowing these guys away but they are playing tough and giving us everything we can handle. Finally, towards the end of the 3rd quarter, we take control of the game. But they are still playing hard and never roll over. We have the ball at the end of the game, up 26-16. We drive down inside the 5 yard line. But, rather than punch in a meaningless TD to pad the score, our HC has the QB take a knee on all 4 downs and runs out the clock. I thought that was a classy move...a real tip of the cap to those kids and their coaches for a tough, hard-fought game. I'm a little too old school. I wouldn't think of that as especially classy, I would think of it as just the right thing to do. I think it may be a state of our profession when something that should be routine becomes the exception. Game's over and you can take a knee to run out the clock, then do so. You're right, but we have to have this discussion about it being classy because we DO have so many D-Bag coaches out there who try to embarrass the other teams and coaches at every chance they get.

We have a student at our school who has been wearing a boot since the first day of school. I think his original reason for it was a "sprained ankle" and he hasn't taken it off yet.

I can see why the original poster doesn't like it though, it's not something you can put your finger on but it just seems flippant, like when you have a class rule that you can't flip bottles, so a kid start rolling it around the desk, and when you ask him to stop he says "what? what?...you said we can't flip it didn't say anything about not rolling it"......that kind of thing..I've never met this pear-eater and likely won't but I can tell ya right now I'm not a fan, besides who just eats a pear in the first place? It's not exactly in the upper echelon of hand held fruits, a good granny smith apple or a banana does the job just fine, feels like the pear is just being over the top, like "not only am I going to eat at practice, I'm going to eat this way too juicy fruit where the stem breaks off really easily" Just remember, when you eat a banana, always bring the banana to your mouth, never your mouth to the banana. Never make eye contact with anybody either...

I would imagine the owner calls them in the office, explains to them that they are moving in a different direction, allows them to clean out their personal belongings and then changes the locks on all the doors.

Focus on the positives as much as you can. We all have to remember that at the end of the day we are dealing with kids who are 14-18 years old and are very frail mentally. Sometimes they crap the bed and really have no reason for it...

Coach your position group. As a coordinator it is your job to understand what everybody on that side of the ball is doing. As a HC it is your job to understand what BOTH sides of the ball are doing. If you are just an assistant you should be able to handle your substitutions and personnel. NEVER make a substitution for a group that isn't yours. Even as a coordinator or HC you should still communicate WHY the substitution is happening.

I curse too much, I can admit that. What I don't do is curse TOWARDS kids or insult them. Any coach that would flat out call kids those names has no business coaching at any level.

This is a tough one with a smaller squad. Do you hit live more and risk injury or do you thud more to save bodies but risk physicality...It is a question that we ask ourselves every week.

In my opinion, if it isn't a school sport then you shouldn't feel like you have to push them to play. Let that poorly run program hang themselves. I think your idea of tactfully promoting SCHOOL sports is completely acceptable.

We had a kid who was a tough SOB like that. Not as physically gifted or athletic but just got after it and played like an A-hole. Best story about him was in a game last year, it was unseasonably HOT, like 95 degrees in mid-September. Kid had been sick all week and was literally throwing up all first half.
Halftime comes around and we strip his shoulder pads off and are filling him with fluids as much as possible. I peak my head of the locker room to speak to him, he sees me, looks me straight in the eyes and says "you're not taking me out of the effing game". He finished the game.

We lift, give them food, do a walk through and then we tell them to lay down and sleep. We will open up our library for them and also our wrestling room. Coaches will walk around and peak in from time to time to make sure no horsing around is going on. Depending on the game they can get anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of good rest and reflection time. Then we will bring them together for a meeting and some words then dress and go time.

Lower level wins are hugely important but I don't think they are more important that players learning to play and learning the offensive and defensive system. I would much rather see improvement over the year as a player than worry about them going 9-0.

Update: lost last night 49-7. Should’ve been closer but I’m not going to try to rationalize the game. We were only losing 21-7 at the half. We stopped them on a 4th and goal at the end of the half. But then in the second half we reaped what we sowed in the offseason. They took the ball down and drove their first drive and on 4th and 15 our ASB-obsessed corner (mentioned above) got out of his C3 backpedal and went after the scrambling QB before he crossed the line. Predictably ensued. The very next kickoff one of our non-bought in seniors who used every excuse (work, vacation, family illness) to get out of weight lifting allowed the kick to go over his head and when he picked it up he fumbled it around and they recovered it in the end zone for a TD. And then the next possession he caught a pass, and got stripped for a scoop and score. One of the bright spots I thought was our junior sam linebacker telling our ASB corner to get out of the defensive huddle and off the field after he made a smart ass comment about the call I made. Im severely hoping he doesn’t show up this week. Currently 1-3. Might be 2 winnable games left on the schedule. That means your kids are starting to take ownership and accountability for the program and their actions. It gets better. First year for us last year and we had horrible seniors. With them gone in year 2 the kids are night and day from last year.

Not to make excuses but we once had a fair skinned QB who had literal blisters on his shoulders after a day of 7 on 7. I think we gave him a few days out of pads.

When they say YOU won't win a game instead of WE won't win a game the culture is not changing.
