Our HC bought 4 a few years back...awful...kids hated them...chinstraps broke all the time...can't change much on them with parts you have in stock for Riddell or Schutt helmets...they also turned yellow after 1 year of use like an old 20 year old helmet...not a fan. We keep a mix of the New model Schutts and the Riddell Speeds...mainly to fit different head shapes and sizes.

Pedialyte...the kids hydration drink. Had a former NFL player on staff...he swore by it. Kind of expensive so we get it for our guys who get the most PT or those prone to cramping pre-game.

Nobody makes fun of the military style boonie hat I wear. It is hot here in Texas. To many old timers who have to have their ears whittled on by the doctor to remove those sun spots for me to care. Most of our staff has one of some shade of camo that we wear during August practice.

Went to maintenance to get more paint one time and left the Jr. High coaches painting practice fields...came back and they had run one of the yard lines to the wrong mark...basically one mark up...had to get some green paint and paint over the mess-up.

Dont like the straw hats...cant wash them when they get nasty. Prefer the Boonie hat. As for the short sleeved jacket they are called anything from a cage jacket to a BP jersey...Russell makes a good one...as well as NIke and Adidas if you can get your hands on them.

We give them for team goals achieved on game day. If the goal was met everyone gets a decal. Set up your offensive/defensive & special teams goals for the season and it is simple after that.

I like the Riddell Speed 2 or any of the Schutt Dna type helmets. We have a mix of both just because some kids heads fit differently in different helmets.

I like both the Riddel Speed and the Schutt...we have mostly DNA's. My biggest issue with each is the specialty parts for each. The quick release attachment for the Speed gets on my nerves. It has to be in there just right or the 1st hit and it is gone. I much prefer screws and t-nuts.

I test the OL every Wednesday. They must know their job on every play and all other OL blocking assignment also. I draw up the fronts we will be facing that week...our formations...and play cards for them to draw on. I cover protections and blitzes etc for pass pro. I test on Wednesday so I can grade and then we can meet for any questions on Thursday.

We have a mix of helmets mainly for fitting them to kids heads. Revo/Speed/DNA/XP ore the ones we have. Any helmets that will not recondition we keep...we dress them with the Friday night decals. We auction/raffle them off/give them to businesses that donate to us etc...

As far as coaching goes...I do not work from a set playbook. What helps me with the details on the field is to come up with a set of coaching points for what I am installing that day. The list can have a few or a lot of things on it but it helps me keep my teaching on track.

I have to work on the passing game and how to attack defenses with it. I am on OLine guy and run is my baby...pass pro is easy for me but the route combos and how to use them against a defense etc... are still a weak point for me.

Raiderx, Have you discussed your ideas with the HC? What is his stance of the meetings? -- yep, still no answer...will hit it up again after the break. I think he just wanted to get off season kicked off before we start move any focus back to last season.

I wish we did this as a staff. I have asked several times to set-up time to do this starting after the 1st of the year but have been met with non-committal answers. Kind of important to me...I have already gone thru my position film multiple times and have about 1/2 a notebook full of notes - esp as they relate to my returners.

I watch the OL play. Steps/blocking schemes and RB path. My DVR remote is used like a cowboy in my house...most people cannot stand to watch a game with me.

I coach right now with a guy who has 15+ years in the business. I have not been around nearly that long. I have studied daily since I got in...all kinds of styles of O and D...all positions...while concentrating on OL...even with his years of experience - he is not any kind of coach. Sometimes it is about work ethic and trying to better yourself - finding outside resources to learn from and not just stopping after the last football game and starting again when August rolls around. I have worked with to many of these August to December coaches over the years. So...to me years is relative...knowledge and willingness to learn is a bigger thing. Yes - years help to learn certain things about the game...but years ain't everything.

We break up our football kids by position. Their position coach is responsible for pulling grades weekly and talking to the kids about failures and borderline grades. We stay on them thru the season and thru offseason. If they are failing they have mandatory tutoring with their classroom teacher after school and tutoring with a coach on staff until the grades come up to an acceptable level. This coupled with some moticational conditioning help keep our kids eligible. Over the past 3 seasons we have only lost 2 kids each football season to grades.

split practice 1/2 and 1/2. Try and 1 way start as many OL as possible or find a way to rotate them thru the Dline. big boys need as much rest as possible. Also, find a way to rest the RB's as much as possible.

The point for me watching film all week is to pick up on things that I may have missed during the week. Maybe when the DT slants he puts his mack foot back slightly. When they run pirate they back the looper off the ball...etc. Anything that I may not have noticed the 1st time that will give an edge.

After a game - win or lose - my wife and kids coming out onto the field and giving me a hug. Watching my kids and the other coaches kids play on the turf after the game while waiting for the players to clear the field.

How could you miss: There is no universal terminology in footballWhile it is true in absolute terms, it is not true in practical terms. 99% of know what a 3 tech is, what a shallow route route is, and what a down block is. Yes I know there are many counter examples. A 7 tech could mean a 9 for some and a 6i for others. China could mean smash or maybe not, and rocket could be an outside toss with fast deep motion, or just the motion, or possibly a tunnel screen. But most coaches, not all, recognize the differences between what is almost "universal" language and what is system or team lingo. -- Agreed - some terms are universal if you have been doing this for any amount of time (or you think they should be). We have a new coach on staff with experience (10+ years). I spent a lot of time at the first of the season explaining to him the difference in Boot and Sprint Out. I thought those were pretty universal...but I guess not.

I coach in TX...we have a varsity with 55+ kids every year. We have 2 JV teams - both have about 35 on them for a total of 70+...some years more like 80+ players. We also have 2 freshman teams - 35 + on each. Not defending or supporting the above argument but we do have that many players. 4A school with middle size 4A enrollment (1600 kids).

Hard to get kids on the balls of their feet when in a 2 point Ive never had a problem with the exception of extremely obese kids of getting into a good 3 point. Why would you want them on the balls of their feet? -- He's not a zone blocking guy if he wants them on the balls of their feet.
