Don't know where that came from coach. Maybe involuntary finger response? :-)

Absolutely hasn't passed you by. When I was a varsity OC we used code words. Kids had no problem knowing what to do because it was the language we used from day 1. Now I'm back at a lower level. We use numbers that indicate how we're blocking (zone, gap, pass, etc.), who is getting the ball, and where it's going. Both work. You just do what works for you, and that's all there is to it. We played the guy blb mentioned above. They were a smaller school than us by a lot, but were always able to hang with us using their "old school" non-facemelter approach. You must jbiw J.H. also.

At the varsity level, playing time should be based on meritocracy until the game is decided. Not to get on a tangent, but I'm certain that word doesn't mean what you intend here. Look up the British origins of the term. That word came from coach Jim Harbaugh! You don't know he is a genius? Come coach, get with it! It means selection based on ability.

We have a team of freshmen who were undefeated 2 straight years in middle school. We haven't scored a point in 2 weeks. I'll see my way out. Don't give up! Keep working hard and good things will start to happen!

We had 13 guys not at practice today. We have 36 total. Enjoy your night. We had almost exactly the same numbers today as you. Including the starting QB. Glad my name isn't on the top. 13 not a practice? A sickness?

BITD before slingshot goal posts I'd just tie a rope between two posts at desired height.

Back in the day when we ran the Wing-T, two coaches would a high jump bar about two yards in front of about 4 players at about 4 feet off the ground on 10 yard “take off drill” for our OLinemen. They were not to hit the bar with their helmets. It was an EDD. We wanted our OL shoulder blocking a defender at waist level. Now that we hand block, we don’t want the OL blocking that low. At the same time, our backs would fake 10 yards downfield hiding the ball covered by their forearms.

Half line may seem like it's half the players, but you can get twice as many involved in a drill when done this way. For example: we run flexbone, so we need 3 running backs and 1 WR (assuming we're not working unbalanced) on every half line drill. Set up a half line to the right and a half line to the left, suddenly you're working 6 running backs and 2-4 WR's per rep. Not to mention scout team players, that's a lot of bang for your buck in regards to reps/time ratio. When does the backside of the OL get reps?

Several years ago, I attended a coaching clinic with some buddies. Joker Phillips was speaking, as he was the HC at Kentucky at the time, so we decided to go and check out what he was doing. At the meeting, he was showing how they were blocking zone away from trips. He drew up several instances with 2-high safeties and a stacked LB on the weak side, with the tackle and the guard combo-ing up from the DE to the LB. I asked him how they would handle it if they got 1-high safety and a force player to the weak side. His response was THEY DON'T SEE THAT! I immediately got up and left the meeting with my pals. I'd like to take this opportunity to vent a bit, after one of my buddies who was there brought it up today. Am I crazy? Am I wrong to think that it's an uncommon look? As a HS coach, I rarely see an edge without a force player. Actually, after 10 years as an OC and 10 more years as an assistant, I've only faced it a handful of times. Also, he was coaching in the SEC. They see EVERYTHING. I can't tell you how much it chapped my butt to have this guy act like I was crazy to suggest that they might have a force player rather than a stack away from trips. What'd I miss? To be honest with you coachbleu, I think you may have some ego issues. JMHO

Jadeveon Clowney received a lot of advice to sit out his Junior season at South Carolina to avoid getting injured-ruining his top draft pick status and potentially losing millions of dollars, especially in light of what happened to Marcus Lattimore. He played as a Junior, and there was a lot of criticism of his effort, that he was "saving" himself for the NFL. Should he have sat the season out? How is Clooney doing at the pros coach? I don't watch pro ball till late in the playoffs.

So Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette have decided to opt out of their bowl games to begin prep for the draft and avoid unnecessary injury risk. As coaches, what do you think about this? What kind of message, if any, does this send to HS players? I'm not for opting out, but he's been plagued with injuries this year. This might have influenced his decision as he is a team person and player.

I agree with the premise of this post, but keep in mind a bad head coach can trump a number of good assistants (I am not writing this is you, just felt the need to point it out). I know a guy who is a HC who will spend hours each week installing new plays on offense and giving motivational speeches, usually what gets cut out is individual time for his assistants to actually teach the players how to play football. Come game time he runs his new plays maybe once, the players bust on execution consistently, and then he complains to his assistants why their positions aren't executing and that they need to fix it (as if a brief explanation in the middle of the game is going to fix something like that). People are what we consistently DO; have your players consistently DO the right things in the week and they will most likely DO them in the game. Yup, there are a few "smorgasbord" coaches around! Just a collection of plays they've see on TV.

Herman is definitely on the radar! Heard nothing but GREAT things! Make sure you sit right in the front row if you hear him speak... Saw Alexander from the Bengals again this year, was a different type of clinic talk some of the stuff he went off on but was very entertaining and good info. Best NFL guy I have heard. Alexander tries to hard to impress coaches with his piano playing stories. I don't have virgin ears, but he over uses the f-word. He is good with the Xs & Os though! His presentation on numbering the defense in the Iso play was excellent

My all-time favorites were, Woody Hayes, Lou Holtz & Tony Mason. Buck Nystrom was very interesting as well, but you didn't want to sit in the front row or volunteer to be his blocking dummy!

When we started sending men into Space NASA discovered that ball point pens would not work in Zero Gravity. So their scientists spent 12 years and millions of dollars developing a pen that would not only write in Space but under water, at heat up to 300 degrees C and down to minus-150 degrees C. The Russians used pencils. Remember that next April 15. April 15th? Taxes due?

As a lefty pens can't be too inky or it smudges all over the place and my left hand looks like I dumped it in an ink jar. Mechanical pencils for most part don't smudge for me, old fashioned pencils always make a mess. I'd be surprised if the SAT was able to read my 20min essay, the page was practically black. You need to start writing from right to left! No smudges!

4 Pilot G-2 07 in red, green, blue & black. In a plastic holder as I've 'em leak before. The ink spots do not look good on khaki pants. Beware of coaches who do not return t hem. When you pull them out of your pocket and ask, "which color?"; they are a bit surprised. However, I should be using pens with erasable ink....if you know what I mean! :-)
No capped pens for me either!
