1. We have 4 lunch periods that occur during 3rd block. It would not be possible for us to do that during lunch. 2. This is probably the best option with how things are currently. I'm really not sure how much is gained from "chalk talk," or even film, without being able to take it directly to the field. Do you stand up and move around to demo anything? ...especially since the 60% of your kids who "need the Xs and Os the most" aren't there. I'd focus on strength training-player development, save the Football for spring practice.

jstoss24 by Xs and Os do you mean Chalk talks, or actual Drills-Skills-Install? Do you have Spring Football?

We have gone back to the early 20th Century and the era of the "tramp athlete," when kids jumped from school to school, often played Semi-Pro under assumed names, and there were no eligibility rules other than what each school chose to enforce (or not).
Which was the genesis for the formation of the NCAA.

2010 was last time we had any two-a-days. Besides their being rules in Illinois about practice time, teachers and or students always go back at some point the first week of practice in our district. This year teachers are back on the first official day of practice. Also, we spend 25 days in summer practicing, mostly in shells. Do you get paid for those 25 summer practices? If I had told my assistants we were going to do that I'd have been flying solo.

It sounds like coaches are doing a lot more in Off-Season and less In-Season.

kylem56 I would suggest you could add time to practice first two weeks (before first game week), say half an hour, and-or do Walk-thrus before school on your "patch of propert (sic)."

I tried doing the one long practice with break in the middle couple of times.
Didn't like it, always seemed like we weren't getting enough installed and enough reps at what we did. Something was always getting short-changed.
I can see where it would work, almost be necessary, in some situations though.

You definitely keep him on JV. You don’t bring a player up unless they sustain their role at the next level otherwise you ruin the player’s development and trust of the kids on JV as you disrupt that classes development. It’s a selfish act as a coach and also a detriment to the teams future success. The kid deserves to play at his level instead of being sacrificed to play kicker at the next level. Being from Green Bay, we have some of the best football knowledge in the nation and I can give you a few good examples of why moving him up is a bad idea. There was a kid from another program that was the 5th best player in the state in his class. They moved him up to be a role player as a freshmen, but ended up starving him of reps. When it was his turn to take over the mantle it was a disaster because he had gone over a year without reps in his role: they ended up have the worst season in the programs recent history and only won 1 game despite having a lot of talent. The kid should have gone D1, should have been all state. It’s a shame really, but he still got a full ride as he somewhat rebounded his senior year. The next example is the most successful program in the region. They had a kid that could have easily played varsity, but they decided to keep him down. He wasn’t supposed to go D1, but ended up taking his team to the state championship his senior year and lost on a timeout call with no timeouts left at the end of the game. He went D1. Great program. There is another such example: and that man is named Michael Jordan. He didn’t make varsity to develop into a role player both skill wise and psychologically, but instead got all the reps on JV. His team won state without him and he went on to be the greatest player of all time wisdom2wins thanks for joining the board, but: Do you realize you responded to a thread from 2014 (almost ten years ago)? Not that there's anything wrong with that, it did elicit some replies. Also, posting a big block of text like you did without paragraphs is very difficult to read, especially white font on black background. Break your posts up into paragraphs so they can more easily be read please.

College Basketball has been dealing with "One and Done" for years, now NIL and transfer portal, and people are still watching, especially the Big Dance.
I'll keep watching CFB just like NFL. Why? Players come, players go. Always have, always will.
I don't pay any attention to recruiting, transfers, free agents, etc.
I root for the team-jersey (am not a gambler or fantasy player).

A few years ago Saban was quoted as saying "The more our game is like the NFL, the better." Wonder if he still feels that way. Rumors and certain interpretations of his post-retirement comments would suggest he did not want to deal with the entitlement level that he was now facing with NIL and transfer portal. But who knows. Same reasons - big-money contracts, Free Agency - he left Dolphins for Bama?

This may not be interesting to anybody else but me for reasons you'll see.
Robbie Gould, the former Bears and 49ers kicker, has been named new HFC at Rolling Meadows IL HS.
On Christmas Eve 2006 I had opportunity to be down on Ford Field prior to Bears at Lions game.
After Bears' Specialty period was over and rest of team came on field to warm-up, Gould came over to sideline near where I was at.
He set up on intersection of GL and SL (where pylon would be).
He kicked five or six at the Goal Posts from there.
All but one went through.
If he can coach near as good as he could kick, Rolling Meadows is in good hands.

Because I wanted to stay in the game, and because the coaches I had were great role models who did a lot for me.
My purpose was to pay something back to the game for what I had gotten out of it, and hopefully emulate my coaches for my players.

I am not going to disagree, but USC football made plenty of cash before Caleb Williams and will make plenty of money after Caleb Williams. Sure, but it's called the Flutie Effect for a reason. Can anybody even name the coach of that BC team without looking it up? Yes. Jack Bicknell.

If you want to see CFB played by real student-athletes, go to games at your local D-III school.

This is only a problem when the athletic program becomes a professional sports organization that can not be funded through the university like extra curricular athletic programs could be. You are correct - but isn't that what we're talking about? FCS, D-2, D-3 - they have much different issues financially. Even G5 football programs have to try to do NIL or lose their best players to the P5s. Jayden Read (now with Packers) was a freshman All-American at my G5 alma mater. A year later he was playing for Michigan State (as one example).

The biggest problem has been since the enacting of Title IX.
And first let me say I'm for Title IX because I'm father of two daughters, glad that Women's Sports have been expanded-got on equal footing.
College athletes have been getting "paid" through scholarships for a long time.
At universities like Michigan, Alabama, Ohio State etc. the scholarships, facilities, equipment, travel, coaches' salaries - not just for women but all "Non-Revenue" sports - get paid for by Football (and in rare instances Basketball).
The Football schools can only fund all their sports (Ohio State has I think 36 total for ex.) if the Football team wins-brings in TV revenue and ticket sales.
Thus they must win.
So they have to hire a HC that can - and pay him the "market value."
That's why coaches' salaries have exploded.
Even if Nick Saban was making $10 million a year at Bama that wasn't big for what he was doing for the university's athletic program as a whole.
And college scholarships are not cheap, either.
Those "student-athletes" don't leave with the student loan debt most will even if they don't get a red cent of NIL money.

NFL is a different animal... the higher you go, the closer it is to a peer-peer relationship in my opinion. I think it is one of the reasons why a guy like Saban was better fit for the College model. More of a subordinate-type relationship with the players. I don't think it is a big deal. Reid didn't seem to mind and probably likes the fact that his superstar TE actually gave a $h!t about winning the game. The personal relationship between the 2 is what determines that. My wife and kids get away with a lot of $h!t I wouldn't take from anyone else. Reid probably was wondering himself why Kelce wasn't in the game. I know I was. He'd have a 30-minute halftime to rest.
