Do you have them in cases if it is poor weather? They are in active proof cases. We have two 11' I-pads. We have the managers or INJ reserve guys keep up with I-pads during practice. I also have their location shared with my personal phone so if they ever get lost I can locate them as well. I can see where some still like drawing plays out, just like when DSV, HUDL and all the other computer driven scouting systems came out there were some that still preferred putting it down on paper. I'm not saying it's better, I'm saying I think it's better for us cause of the time it saves us with what we like to do. We used iPads for years. Otterbox case. They were really durable. The thing that eventually was a problem was COLD. In PA in December we had a few days of sub 30 degree temperatures. iPad battery went dead. Now that iPad has a battery life of a few minutes. I have gone back to a binder with printed cards. Not sure I have the budget for a new iPad every time it got cold. We have practiced until thanksgiving for a while. If we were done by November 15, I don't think it would be an issue

Coach, From experience. Let them eat on the bus (bagged lunch or whatever). We generally want to eat 3-4 hours before the game. That means eating at 9 or 10 for a 1 PM game. You probably want to leave about 10 minutes of extra time there (long trip, bathroom) before your normal pregame routine starts. All the pregame depends on your normal gameday.
The thing we learned the hard way is to have a plan to feed the kids after the game. The are leaving their homes around normal school time. You won't be back until around 6 Pm.
True story. We had a playoff game (neutral site 10 min drive for opponent, 3.5 hours for us) that we were winning. We had arranged with a local Pizza place to drop off pizza after the game in the locker room. Pizza place called at halftime to say, sorry no Pizza. In a place that is rural, there are not a lot of options that can handle a traveling party of 70 or 80 on no notice. Really had to scramble.

As a follow up (Maybe a new thread? Mods?).
I am really struggling to find coaches. We have been pretty good over that last 6-7 years. Had 8 guys leave the staff this year (All still positive, come to games, etc, just don't have time). We have really struggled to replace them. Finding guys that can be here at 3 PM for practice is nearly impossible. Not a lot of jobs in the building.
I'm 40, Im one of the young guys. Any ideas as to where I can find younger guys that want to coach and can be here all the time?

We pay a company to film for us. We played out of town (about 2 hour drive) a few years ago and the company subcontracted the film out to a guy close to the venue. He did the same thing. Didn't pause the camera once. Also showed up 2 minutes before kickoff and spilled coffee everywhere. That Freshman didn't do such a bad job

I grade. I’m the OC and I grade every skill kid. OL coach grades OL. I think it helps me focus on the film and prevents me from getting fixated on a play or missing something. Kids like getting a grade. It works for us. On D, our DL is the only group that grades. I don’t think our LB get a lot better during the year

We don’t meet or bring the kids in over the weekend (there are 1 or 2 Jv games that are sat, but normally Jv plays Monday evening). Coaches grade and plan on their own, but we textvand call each other as needed). We life twice a week in season. Monday, wed for varsity guys. It has been good

Keep the kids that don't play much/at al warm. I wouldn't fight any battles about JV kids gearing up under pads.

Does anybody else have to be off the field for Band/Whatever? In our league (7:00 games) the general rule is that we have to be off the field from 6:30-6:55. So our pregame is 5:40 - Kickers, Snappers, Returners, Holders, QBS (get loose) 5:50 - Skill kids - One hand drill 6:00 - Whole Team - Flex 6:10 - Off Indy 6:14 - Def Indy 6:18 - Subs (HC loves it, drives me nuts) 6:25 - 4 Off plays vs Scout - finish with PAT 6:28 - 3 Def plays vs Scout - finish with Punt 6:30 - Back to locker room
Having that 25 mins isn't ideal, but it is the expectation in our league

1.) Our practice is 2 hours and 6 minutes long (36 three minute periods with 30 seconds between each period)
2.) Yes 3-6 special team periods a day. Works out to 10-20 Minutes
3.) YES - we started using a plan on paper about 10 years ago. I would never go back.

True story. My first year of tackle football weSTARTED practice with that drill. I was a 9 year old 3rd grader. The best kid on the team was an 11 year old 5th grader. He went on to play at Ohio State. He was huge and had red baseball cleats (metals). I still have flashbacks

What about coaches? We have several volunteer/low pay coaches who come from work and from time to time an be a few minutes late. The coaches usually let me know and I don't really have a problem with them working football into their work schedules.
However, I have a hard time punishing/motivating/teasing a kid about being a few minutes late when there is a coach walking into practice at the same time the kids is getting there (late).

For those of you with the water-boy style system, how do you clean it? We have had ours for several years and I feel like it needs a thorough cleaning but I'm not sure the best way to do that. I would like to clean all of the hoses, nozzles, everything. Any suggestions? I run sterimine through. COmes in tabelet form. Drop in a tab, fill the tank, rinse and it is good to go

We get a couple every year. Not a long track record of success but when it does work out, it is great. We had a kid this year come out for the first time as a Senior. He was a hockey kids whose parents were afraid he would get hurt. STUD. Dominated games at DE and Nose. Huge addition. We try to get as many as we can on the team, don't turn many away.

Coach, Scheme: Keep it simple
The hardest thing for us was managing playing time. Depending on how many you have it can get tricky

School ends at 2:30. Until daylight savings we have film and lifting (alternate days jv/varsity) from 2:45-3:15. Practice starts at 3:45. It's about a 5-10 minute walk out to the field, locker room is one way in/out and pretty cramped. To get them all dressed and out to the practice field, 15 mins would be pushing it.
After daylight savings, school out at 2:30, practice 3-5 (or dark), film/lift 5:15-5:45

I always have thought 2.5 hours is the absolute limit. We start there and scale back by taking periods from 10 to 5 to 4 to 3 mins. We have be going 1:45 for the last two weeks because of darkness. With early dismissal Wed and holiday Thurs, some guys on staff want to keep the kids for 2:15. That worries me, so four hours at this point seems like overkill. But, to each his own.

I m a visual learner. Drawing all 22 really helps me. I do all our scout cards on both sides of the ball, I can't tell you how much drawing up what I'm seeing had helped me develop. I can't recommend it enough

Guys, We've had a lot of trouble with our Waterboy. Had the old one (Wagon style) and the wagon wheel base really had a hard time taking the weight of the tank when it was full. Are we doing something wrong? First one lasted about 4 years. Is that about the lifespan?

I take out keys, phone, practice plan, and pen (forget the pen or "loan" it to someone and don't get it back almost daily. Money clip stays in my car.
For a few years, I was leaving phone in the car or inside my locker. I wanted to be able to focus on coaching. However, I now take it out in case of emergency.

Try to drum up ~10 helmets. Jerseys might work themselves out by game 1. But every kid that wants to play should have a real shot at practice. Try borrowing from another school. I've helped 'rivals' with equipment before, most coaches are good guys and will help. I've also borrowed pants abd other equipment from local colleges. Give them a call and see. (Try the equipment guy not a coach)

Coach, For every day drills, I time. Start with 10 minute periods at the start of camp. Enough time to introduce drill, make specific corrections, etc. At the end of 2-A-Days we cut to 5 minute periods, by the end of the year we are at 2 or 3 minutes. I make sure everybody does the drill. In two minutes we shoot for 6-12 individual reps. Try to keep drills to less than 5 things we can correct.

What about staying over? We have had playoff games 3-4 hours away twice. One a 1 PM kickoff the other 7PM. Drove up game day both times. Won 1, Lost 1. Parents and other coaches who have been at Colleges were sure we should sleep over. I think it would be a bigger distraction. Any thoughts?

I lose this argument a lot, but I am much more concerned about what a kid WILL DO as opposed to what he CAN DO. Potential and raw talent are great, but I don't want a guy who is vanish when it matters.
