I haven't posted here on the site in a long time either. Definitely interesting reading everyone's response to the topic. I have been a member here since the beginning of my teaching career, starting year 17 tomorrow. Seems like most of us have a lot of similar experiences in vastly different geographical areas across the country. Took a job a one of the best high schools/school systems in the my state this past year. Definitely revitalized my energy level. However, I still know that my time coaching is winding down, since my attitude has shifted greatly. Right now my only concern is to give kids the best high school experience they can possibly have, and I am now coaching at school competing for state championships in most sports. That maybe because my kids are coming through soon and I coach sports on both the boys and girls sides. But the day to day grind for little pay and a massive time commitment are finally wearing me down.

I have only worn a collared shirt twice in the last 4 years of teaching (math). Normally wear khakis and a dry fit shirt with a hot jacket. Since I have coached football and baseball at my school the last 9 years I am pushing 15-20 different jackets. I am also a fan of Sanuks for shoes, extremely comfortable and no one from administration has ever complained.

I am the DC. This was the HC's call at the beginning of the year. He was wanting to try something different after reading about how Chip Kelly ran his practices. We platoon anyways so we already get a lot of reps during the week but I really like the extra day. It does come with more work because its another day to script and some more scout cards to draw.
We share our game field in town with the other public high schools so Thursday games are somewhat normal for us. Over the past few years we played some of best games on Thursday night. Some of our staff came to the conclusion that was because we were just using Wednesday as a normal practice day and not a walk thru.

We got rid of our walk thru on Thursdays this year. We actually tried to make our Wednesday practice our easier practice of the year. I am not sure that worked as well because the kids would mentally check out because they knew it was going to be an easier day. After getting four full practices in each week I wouldn't go back to having walk thru anymore. It definitely took the pressure off during the week to get everything put in the practice script on Monday and Tuesday. It also allowed for some game plan adjustments during the week if we didn't like how things were developing.

We deal with this 2 to 3 times a year since we share a stadium with the other high schools in town. We don't change our routine. Practice is the same Monday through Wednesday, with a short special team mock game at the end of Wednesday's practice. We two platoon so that does help.
In Iowa we get used to short weeks especially at playoff time. End the regular season on Friday followed by round 1 on Wednesday, round 2 on Monday, round 3 on Friday, then finally back on a normal schedule the last two weeks.

Now Sundays I will work when I get home until about midnight and most of the week I am up at 5am and will work until 6:30am then help get the girls to school. Then at night be husband and dad until 10pm and then try to work as long as I can stay awake.

We play in the largest division in our state, but we don't have enough athletes in the building for each of them to specialize, we have to share. We are about 5 years into having lifting scheduled into our school day and it has made a big difference. We lift on gameday no matter what sport it is. I am the head baseball coach(varsity DC for football) and we lift Monday through Thursday during the season, you miss weights you don't play and that includes my starting pitchers. If a multi-sport athlete is taking gamedays off from lifting that is going to add up to a significant number of days missed.

In Iowa the top 4 in each district make the playoffs, each class has 8 districts so 32 teams in each class.
We finish our regular season ends on Friday. Round 1 on Wednesday, Round 2 on Monday, Round 3 On Friday, and then they finally give the teams an actual week for the next two rounds. I find it funny that everything is about safety until in comes to playoff time and then the state feels that it must get in as many games as possible as fast as possible.

Not a head football coach yet, Varsity DC and Head Baseball Coach. I get up at 5am most days and do something, if we have morning workouts I get up earlier, today I got up at 4:30. Just finished P90X2 last week, if I don't do something the weight just piles on.

We lift on game days and we follow the program that is set up by the people in town that run our strength and conditioning. Our kids initially complained and some parents did too but they have gotten over it after see our results both physically but also on the field.

The state I coach in doesn't start high school baseball until May so we only have little overlap. However, I am the head baseball coach. My varsity doesn't start practice until 5:15, just to make sure that the kids can do both for the month. The track coach has postponed his departure for the state track meet so I can practice. No matter what I think we should do our best not to make kids choose if at all possible. I know there are going to situations that just don't work and the kids HAVE to make choice. Communication is key, in our situation my baseball program would win the majority of the kids if they had to make a choice. I am not out to destroy the track program the better the track program the more successful our entire athletic program is.

When I first started ten year ago I was looking for resources and anything I could get my hands on. Bought a ton of books and videos, but I think the best thing I did was join Bill Williams FCPGA and just start watching as many videos as I could. Pick the topic/scheme/position group and go to town. I really feel that I made up a lot ground quickly.

Head Baseball. I am currently the varsity DC and in the state of Iowa we don't play high school baseball until the summer, so our state tournament is the last weekend of July.
I won't have a weekend off until Thanksgiving or so.

I think most of us would lean to continuing to coach simply for the love of the game and being around the kids. However, I have a hard time justifying to my wife and kids that I am spending nearly 8 hours a day on something that I am not getting paid to do. I would much rather be volunteering at a local college if that was my choice.

Weeks into dating my wife we had the discussion of coaching. I told her its who I am and what I want to do. If you don't want to be apart of that now is the time to get out.
If I needed to take some time off from coaching to help with my family that would be a no brainer, but to be given an ultimatum that would be different.
Marrying someone then asking them to quit being who they are is questionable.

As far as a JV baseball program goes I tell my JV coach he needs to deliver me about x amount of players for next year. Those kids that we know we need will play almost every inning we can get them. The reality of JV baseball is why give a bunch of innings to kids that will NEVER play varsity. They are on JV so I have a roster big enough to play the kids I need.
It doesn't mean they never play, it means a few of those kids will share positions with each other, while the future studs get at bats and innings pitched/played.
Baseball is a completely different animal than football. Football needs numbers. I hope to get 5 to 6 kids a class in baseball, so I am not concernced with certain kids quitting.

'Squeeze the air out of the ball' for RBs.
'Pinch the elbow' also for RBs.
'Eyes to the sky' for cut blocking and tackling.
Maybe one of my favorite ones I've heard came from a Bill Williams tape I watched this month on LBer footwork. 'Don't Oz him' ....thinking the HBO show 'Oz'.

My wife HATES football season. I think she went to 3 games this year, all home games. Which is fine because it is a chore to go to games with our two girls (4 months and almost 3 years old). Every year at the beginning of the season it seems like a struggle because of the time, by the end of the year she seems to get used to it.
Most of our issues with time is that I coach baseball and it runs directly into football season. Baseball in Iowa is a summer sport, and if you get to the state tournament you might get 3 days off before camp starts.

Well I think Bill Williams FCPGA is a great resource. For the money, yeah over the course of the year you'll spend $500-600, but if you take a staff out of town to a clinic and spend the night how much does that cost?? I generally received new tapes every ten days, but it was a priority to get them duplicated and sent back ASAP. Hopefully the next day. If you do this for a couple of years you can really build a library for your program. Talk about being able to coach up your assistants, or maybe let your youth program/middle school coaches learn from them.

I love to make wings my wife's favorite is on the grill. Not very complicated. The best sauce I've used on the girll is Cookie's Wings and Things Sauce.
I didn't do anything special as far a seasoning. Make sure you cut the wings at the joints or buy the wingettes that are already cut, you can throw the tips away. Pour the sauce in a pan on the grill with wings or use a burner if you have one attached to a gas grill. Put half the wings on grill for 8 minutes while the other half is simmering in the pan with the sauce. Continue to rotate the wings from the sauce and the pan for about 50 minutes. Generally the wings will be on the grill 3 times and in the pan three times.
The other recipe I use is when I fry my wings, I use a cheap fryer from walmart holds about 12-14 wings. These are real spicy but everyone loves em. Batter: 2 cups of flour Tsp of salt Tsp of Black pepper Tsp of White pepper Tsp of Paprika Tsp of Ginger Tsp of Red Pepper Tsp of Chipolte Pepper Tsp Cayenne Pepper
You can put your wings, again make sure they are cut up, in the bowl and mix it with the batter or you can just cover the wings with the batter on a cookie sheet, I've done both. Just make sure they are coated. Place in the refrigerator for 90 minutes. Can be longer but make sure you have time to let the batter coat the wings.
Preheat the fryer to 375 for 20 minutes, then put the wings in for about 12 minutes at shot. Once the wings are down place them on a rack to drain for about 30 seconds then you can put them in the sauce and they are ready to eat. My favorite sauce for this is recipe is Franks Buffalo Wing Sauce, its like 2 bucks at Walmart.

A great resource that no one has brought up is Bill Williams FCPGA. I think for about 200 bucks you can become a member. You'll be able to get a great general picture of everything and once you get a job you can focus on your position and schemes.
In six years I went from not playing college football, to coaching at the NAIA level and I think my studying from FCPGA and all those resources has really paid off.
