This year we started No BCD, which stands for no blaming, complaining, or defending (I believe our hc got it from OSU). If you bcd, you'll find yourself at the bottom of the depth chart. If your not a player who gets meaningful reps in practice or in games and you do this you'll never see the field even during garbage time. Players who drop down the depth chart have to check their attitudes because we are not going to deal with a bunch of "me guys". The thing is, you've got to really hammer it to those who do it, even if they are starters or it won't work with the rest of the team. Once kids see the starters being called out for it they get the message really quick.

in Washington we get 20 football contact days including spring ball and summer camp. Broken down it is 8 days of spring ball Monday-Thursday at the end of the school year, and 4 days of summer camp which leaves us with 8 contact days in the summer. We use those days for 7 on 7 every Wednesday night (about 2 hrs) up until the first of August (which dead period). Monday nights the kids do there own non-mandatory throw around session without coaches and maybe do that for an 1-1.5hrs. Lifting and conditioning is 1 hour Monday-Thursday. We don't make anything manditory, but the kids do have to pass a conditioning test before being able to suit up for our first game of the season (safety issue). We did this routine last year and it worked out great for us. As a coach I didn't feel like it was to much And the kids were still competing into early December. Not including spring ball and camp it is 7-10 hours a week.

We were playing a team who has a long tradition of winning and going deep into the the playoffs with 5 state championships that hadn't lost at home in several years. They were 7-1 and we were 5-2. I don't recall the last time we had beaten them. All I knew was that it was going to be a battle because we had a tough group of seniors. At half we were up 12-7 and you could tell the crowd was completely shocked because of the silence in the stands. Unfortunately we missed both extra points which I knew could possibly haunt us. In the second half the battle continued to be played pretty much in the middle of the field until they dialed up a flee-flicker that got them down to our 5. The punched it in at the end of the 3rd to take the lead 14-12. In the 4th quarter it was pretty much the same until around 3 minutes left. The opposing team moved the ball inside our 10 and on 4th and goal elected to go for it. Fortunately, we got the stop and there was around 1:30 left on the clock. We began to move the ball and got all the way to about the 50 were stalled out on downs and lost them game. It was a terrible loss but alt the same time a great game defensively to coach. I felt like our kids were on point most of the night with just a couple of breakdowns. Funny thing is, now I coach at this school and we won the state championship last season.

1. Pregame warmup and stretch in the gym, lights off, and music blaring. 2. Honoring former players. Each kid Finds The name of two former players that wore their jersey # and they write those names on a white mustang decal (because we are the Mustangs) and stick the decal on a board that can travel with us. As they walk out on to the field before a game they pound the decal. 3. Thursday after practice varsity team meeting. HC/OC, DC, and SpC make powerpoints on goals for the upcoming game. 4.. Thursday night varsity team dinner after team meeting at a players house. 5. Several of us position coaches host Wednesday night dinner for our varsity position players.

In Washington state our last regular season game is on a Thursday and playoffs begin on the following Tuesday. Also, I believe if there is a 3 way tie for a playoff spot they will have a 3 way mini tie breaker on the Saturday following the final Thursday game.

To letter at our program you must play in 20 quarters. The amount of snaps per quarter doesn't matter.

Yeah, we do it Friday at 3:00 also. On away trips, parents will prep a meal and we'll usually stop half way to our destination and eat.

Agree with blb. Your classification doesn't change based on public vs private in WA State. On the east side of the cascades (where I coach) there are no private school in our division, but when you go to the west side of the cascades you find some.

Our staff will be hitting the Seattle Glazier Clinic Feb 25-27th. Haven't been to a glazier clinic before, but by the topic list, it's got my interest.

Coach, this maybe too far north for you, but Central Washington University (DII) puts on a great team camp. Their coaching staff is very knowledgable and professional. Their first session is June 13-16 and costs $285. We've gone the past three years and have been very impressed with the way they run it.

As a staff we are a bunch of goof balls and we think we can all sing. Just before we go out on the field, one of the coaches will crank up the stereo and we'll all start to singing a song. This happens at both home and away games cause our players always gotta bring the big home theater stereo where ever we go. This year our song was Chicken Fried by The Zac Brown Band. It pretty much begins right after the lords prayer and the players begin to line up and walk out the locker room doors. Usually the kids are out on the field and where still in the locker room finishing up the song.
Man, it's friday and I sure miss those times right now. Already looking forward to spring ball.

Our regular season ended the on the 5th. Crossover games with another league in our region play tonight (to see who makes it to state playoffs). Our state playoffs begin this coming Friday and Saturday. We didn't make (7-3 overall), but it was our best season since 1990. Already looking forward to next season even though we lose some studs.

For the last three years as a staff we have lived by this motto: "Nobody will out hit us or out hussle us". Really, that is the only thing you can control on the football field. Our school is not blessed with big guys or kids with a lot of football knowledge, but what we do have are kids with a lot of heart and are willing to learn. 1. Our first goal as a staff was to just compete. Teach them to compete during practice and they will learn to compete in games. 2. Teach them that football is fun, but it's got to be done at a 100% and the coaches need to be passionate about it. 3. Implement the things you know now. You've got to develop your system and it's got to start somewhere. When we started we knew where we wanted to be, but at the same time we were realistic about taking a lumps and bruises (especially since we were 2-20 before our new HC came in). 4. Be positive and look for the little positives of each game. Praise when kids have done things right, and at the same time don't dwell, but coach them up when they don't do it right. We're not the yelling type of staff, not saying we don't get after them, but for every time we do,t we have better said I love you 5 times. These days kids are fragile and many need a mentor rather then a dictator. Plus, kids know when they've screwed up, one of our jobs is to pick them back up.

Kellen Moore, QB (Prosser H.S.- Boise State) Gaterade Player of the year for WA State Career Record in Completions Threw 66 TD's junior year and 67 his Senior year Highest QB rating in College football (As of last season I believe) In his senior year I believe he threw 7 TD's in the first half against us. Quite Sad, but a hell of a QB.

This is kind of funny, but we have been meeting as a HS staff every friday morning for the last 2 months and this morning we had a discussion on the same topic. The consensus as a staff was that putting one of the more experienced coaches down with the younger kids would help them develop into what we want as high school players. We're considering moving that coach all the way down to middle school since we are a one middle school and high school town. I see nothing wrong with this, as long as the coach is willing to move down.

1. Doesn't sound like he'll need her as a reference if he's already got the job. 2. Permanent record as in permanent at his current school. Won't follow him to the new job. 3. Sounds like he'll actually make some money even while being docked.
Oh Yeah, What was the question again?

Not to hijack, but how do colleges find out and get names of athletes (especially from smaller schools)?
We've got two junior running backs (2nd team honors and the other honorable mention) that will be seniors next season and colleges have begun asking for film on them. This is new territory for our staff and I'm just wondering if there is anything else we as a coaches can do to get more exposure for them.

This does not happen in our state and I don't care for the idea. I think you should have to earn the right to play in the post season.
My first year coaching our team made it into the post season with I believe 3 wins. The head coach at the time was also new (as well as cocky) and told reporters that people should expect to see our team in the playoffs as long as he was here. To me it was total croc. Our team didn't deserve it and it showed when we got bounced by a way better team in the first round. The following two years our team went 2-18 and he was run out of town.
Our league now takes the top three teams to playoffs which is the way I think it should be. You gotta earn the right to play in the postseason.

Our football team will have a week long intermerals session in the summer with the elementary schools. Also, one of our LB coaches teaches Elementary PE, so he talks a lot of football with the kids. Lastly, we take the head Grid Kids Coach (Pee Wee football) to all football clinics we attend, and at the beginning of there season our staff and some of the players will go down and help with the first week of practice.

This isn't really about conditioning, but went to a clinic this weekend and heard a coach talk about players loafing. He said that during any time of practice they see loafing by a player or players then they write the names down. At the end, when getting ready for conditioning they will name those players who were loafing and for each player add an extra set to their team conditioning.
His definition of loafing: 1. when a player slows down before the end of the play 2. when a player is slow and then speeds up because the play is not over 3. when a player slows down-speeds up-slows down before the end of the play
All of their plays last for 30 yards and each player on D has to touch ball carrier with both hands of ball carriers hips. The Offense has to sprint the 30 yards after making their blocks. Once ball carrier get 30 yards play is over, but everyone should be going full speed until he reaches that 30 yards. It was awsome watching cut-ups and linemen passing the baller carrier.

I remember being that kid. Going to practice with my dad was always fun. Wish I could share it with my kids, but it's a little harder with three little girls.

Not a head coach, but what I would do is try set up a team meeting as soon as possible (if, and when you get hired). See who shows up, introduce yourself and all that good stuff. Be really positive and gung ho, and don't even mention the last two years and the former head coach. The past is the past and you're here to build a program for the up coming season and the future. Those who are commited will show for the meeting and you've got to sell the program to them first before you start worrying about those who don't show. I think if you stay positive and excited and list your expactations, the word will get out to those who are on the fence or didn't show because of the former hc.
