This past weekend we had an opportunity to win our rivalry game and play for a seed in the state playoffs. We played awful. Worst game we played this year and we were even if not better than our opponent. We fumbled 7 times losing it 5 times, they scored on each of the turnovers. Defensively we were just as bad. We take pride in our pursuit and our ability to tackle. All of it out the window. The weather was terrible, very cold, rainy, and windy but our opponent had to play in it too. I utilized my TO's to calm them down etc.. we just got our butts kicked. I have been the HC here for over a decade and we have won a few and lost a few but I have never seen a complete breakdown across the board like this. We have two consolation games left. Any thoughts on how to get them back? IMO we are a year away but in the same sense we played well below our potential his year and we have a lot of talent coming back.

I took over this program at 29 and we have turned it around from being a doormat to one of the better programs in our area. This has taken a lot of work, in 11 years we have suffered a lot of losses and enjoyed a lot of successes. We are currently 1-5, it is the worst recored we have had since or second year. We have lost 5 games by a total of 13 points. The school culture has changed a lot over the last 2 years. We are inner city and we are headed in to level 4, we have as a faculty been put under the microscope and instead of tightening the belt we have really relaxed our approach. They took away the attendance policy, changed the schedule and have made it almost impossible for our students to fail. IMO, by doing this we are failing them. My issue (amongst others) is that this negative culture of low standards and no expectations is seeping it's way in to my football program. We fold in the 4th quarter, we are always looking for the easy way out and I try to tell the boys there is no time and a half to win a game. We have had some major player issues, a starting MLB took off and was missing for 2 weeks, a young girl who is related to a few player was murdered in a drive by shooting by one of their friends. Another player had to miss 2 games as his uncle was murdered. What do I do? We have tried every motivational speech, every trick in the book. These kids are survivors not fighters, I will not ever give up on them and I will love and treat them as my own. My standards remain high and I still coach as hard today as I did all those years ago. Any thoughts or any ideas, this cancer is eating away at this thing we built. How can high standards survive low expectations? If they are not being held accountable in school how can they expect to win a football game?

We lost our opening game on Friday night in heartbreaking fashion. We were up by 12 in the 4th and we ended up losing by 4. Film day today, we really dominated play but made several undisciplined mistakes late in game that cost us. My assistants want to bring hell and fury to film room. We are obviously not mentally tough even though we are very talented. I have been doing this a long time now and this may be the most difficult loss of my career, any thoughts on how to handle film today? Silkyice I agree, we usually watch film on Saturday's too but I thought a few days off would suit the kids better. We will continue to do that moving forward. I appreciate the advice that is what I plan on doing

4 coaches in the building out of 6... Plus 2 former coaches who volunteer but had to give up coaching due to young families.

We start on Monday, three weeks away from our first game. Our starting QB, fullback (Flexbone Triple) and our Mike Linebacker (4-3 Under) will not be at practice for the first week due to a circumstance that I nor they can control. They will be eligible to play and they did not do anything wrong. They will be away for a great experience. I am not happy about it but I can't control it. Usually we would have anyone who misses the first week sit the first 2 games but they have been issued a waiver and they are also our 3 best players
My question is, how much should we install offensively and defensively? They are going to miss a maximum of 8 practices...Do we go along as normal and expect them to catch up and jump right in or do we limit what we do so we aren't double teaching? We will have an additional 13 practices before our first game. I understand no one is above the program and all of that. I am looking about this long term for the season and not week 1. What would you do ?

The only thing that I see that kind of bugs me is the statement about "preparing the boys for Friday night but for life after high school as well." I truly think that what we do in our programs is a building block for the kids, but not the only one. I think that to many times teachers/coaches fall into the thought of "I am going to make a difference in this kids life and all will be well".
People say to me all the time that you can't fix 15-16-17 years of garbage in 1 football season. I understand that 100%.
I am not from this area but we are an inner city football program, we have three schools that vie for all the student/athletes attention. We were once a thriving city that is basically dead because our only major industry left. Our major industry now, Department of Social Services. I have 75 kids on my team out of those 75 kids 50 percent or more come from single mother households. The only men that these kids have in there life are there coaches and the police. We have had players go to Ivy league schools who bought in and had some real self motivation, and kids who had some with real self motivation who are now in jail. Everyone of us has kids like this in there program. We are not trying to be saviors. we yell, we swear we have fun with the kids, jokes etc.. Its isn't all business . BUT we are trying to be consistent. I think people get nit picky about, why can't they wear hats? Why do they have to all wear the same stuff in the weight room during the season? Not because we are trying to be we are trying to be harda$$es but because we want them to be responsible to themselves and each other. The same premise carries over to the field. When have a group of players that are responsible and care about themselves and others on our program we usually have some success on the field. When we don't we won't.
We are not doing anything different then probably 99% of you.

Great responses guys...I've read your posts and spoke with some other coaches whose opinion I value. I only know one way. I do show my players respect and I do care about each and everyone of them. We are trying to teach them to care about themselves too. I am not sure what the dynamics of your programs or schools are. I only know where I have been and where I am now. We are doing the right thing. We run a quality program and I will continue to run it and adjust with it each year. I do like the post about getting the kids involved in making the decisions on team rules etc... so we did it tonight. 12 seniors made the decisions and they came up with same "rules" that were in place last year and for the past 4 years that I have been HC of the program. I asked the kids why the same rules? They responded "that is the way its done here!"

Steelhawk,
We have a few standards that need to be met. I know its semantics but I am not sure we have any rules. Be at practice work your a$$ off, be in school work your a$$ off. The students are not supposed to wear hats in school. We enforce the rule, we have 6 coaches and 5 of them are in the building so we are all giving it to them all day. The swearing thing is really not a big issue. There is a quota on swear words and I will use the entire quota the first day practice. We will not let the kids take the easy way out. I am not going to appease at the cost of many. I am a prick about the uniform though.

I just had a conversation with someone involved in the youth football program that serves all three high schools in our city. The guy tells me that he understands why I run the program the way I do but he doesn't agree with it. It is a very different situation because we have 3 high schools all in the city limits competing for the same kids.
We are very disciplined, very team orientated. Practice is mandatory (miss practice make up that practice the next day after wards) we script every practice. We swear we do push ups, we don't wear hats in the building. Every player wears the same thing, Black shorts Grey Shirt, black socks when we lift or when we go uppers. We say Yes Coach No Coach, we check there grades and we do not tolerate them going to detention or getting ISS. Our uniform looks the same the coaches all dress a like etc...We have created Standards that we ask the players and coaches to live up to .
Our school is ran completely opposite, open campus lots of freedom. Kids basically can do whatever they want within reason. The football program isn't the military and we have fun but we are not only preparing the boys for Friday night but for life after high school as well. Isn't this our jobs?
Am I wrong with this philosophy? From what I understand the other programs are a bit looser, one of our sister schools in the city they call the HC by his first name. We have a team in our area from a much better economic situation then we have hasn't lost a game in 2 years and they are real loose like.
I am afraid that we are losing kids because they are afraid to work and have discipline or meet the standards that have been created for them. Any thoughts?

Several of our players just really don't care anymore. Instead of using sports as a way out they they look at it as a rite not a privilege. More and more of our players come from single parent homes, through DSS or really just do not have a care in the world. Our academic policy's make failing very difficult and aims to keep kids in school. Over the last 2 or 3 months we have over 10 of my players suspended form school and or arrested. We have numerous players involved in all out brawls after school or in community events. The gang issue has always been in the background but has become more and more prevalent in the last few years. I am the PE teacher in the building and the Head Football coach. My entire staff works in the building as well. When there was an issue the admin used to send them to me/us and we would "take care" of the situation. Our relationship with the players has always been good but more and more kids won't come to us with issues anymore. We have had team meetings, individual talks. I have brought people in who have gone through similar things. Our AD had Chris Herren come and speak to the entire school, we do Leadership council, we get all over the kids for not attending the weight room, grades etc...It has NO effect on them. I am worried about the future of these kids, the community as a whole and of course the football program. Through all the changes in the area we pledged as a staff that we would always remain consistent and I believe we have. If anyone else has gone through this or is going through this please let me know what you did or are doing. Our future is really hanging in the balance here.

As I prepare my pre-season practice plans I am considering taking out the old school conditioning stations where groups rotate form one grueling drill to another to instead running stations that are based purely on fundamentals. Has anyone done this? The kids have been working hard so they are already in pretty good condition. Just a thought.

We are a Flexbone triple Option team. We struggle with numbers ever year and our kids begin playing football when the get to HS. We have a terrible feeder system. If we do not cut in practice we will not cut in games, if we do cut in practice we risk the kids getting hurt. We try and use bags as often as possible and just work technique. It is a slippery slope. Defensively we run to the ball and thud. we go live during tackling circuits etc...etc...

I have a seen a similar thread on here but I can't find it anywhere. We are in the midst of a major change in focus in our school district and PE is being targeted like never before. We are needing to find more and more ways to substantiate our jobs and come up with data for everything.
I am a PE teacher, and the Head Coach of the Football program My co-worker is soon to be Head Coach of the baseball team and another is Head Coach of the track program. The admin is looking for us to make changes in our curriculum so that more (all) kids pass. We are looking to get out in-front of it so we are talking initiative but making it fall in line with the rest of the school.
Selfishly, this would be huge for us as kids would have to lift, and condition and it would most likely be an A so it would help keep them eligible.
For those of you that have an Athletic PE period or a Weights class, how did it go about about happening.

Wolverine55,
I agree. My issue when I heard this was that the HC is an employee of the school that is not open. He has not been there that long but both schools are in the same district and fall under the same umbrella. That was thing I never heard of.

There are two rival high school's in the same city, one Head Coaching position just opened up. The vacant school has much better facilities and a few better athletes but has been down for a few years. The thing is some people have made overtures to the rival's HC from the other school to come over and take the job. He is contemplating the move. What do people think of this type of thing happening? Does anyone know of this type of thing happening. I know assistants do it all the time but Headers?

We have them. I bought them last season. The Texas Tech style in our colors. The pants alone are worth it. The jersey is fine we did not go with the tackle twirl numbers because of the price but we went with the regular press on. We had some numbers fade because of use but UA agreed to replace them. Too bad for us it was only the numbers on the back of the jersey LOL! I agree with a previous post, the cleats are no good but they gave us gear etc and have been very accommodating. There are specials on prices if you order them by a certain date, it saved us a ton on 70 units.

In my area we have one Catholic school that just blatantly recruits. We lost 3 starters to them in the last 3 years. I have no respect for them or anything they do. It has always been speculated that they do this but it all came to fruition last year. They are our biggest rivals in Football and it goes back to the 20's. They are offering kids $7500 to $8000 a piece if they have any type of ability. Most kids will leave us because they have no academic standards, they do not have have to take the state test in Math or English. What makes it worse is that we have to share our game facilities with this program. The recruiting will never stop but we will stop losing kids to them when we start to beat them. The real problem is that Catholic churches are closing all over the area because of lack of funds and they can offer kids $8000. If it sounds like sour grapes it is.

This is really sad news and hits home with me. My wife is a Breast Cancer survivor of 3 years, she was diagnosed when she was 28. Now at 31, she is cancer free but it is a constant battle with living a healthy lifestyle and raising our two boys. It has been a long and difficult journey needless to say. Football season is particularly hard as I am not home nearly enough. As a head coach I preach family, togetherness, caring etc..I feel I am a hypocrite as I put my family on the back burner and take them for granted during the season. I have made a conscious effort this off season to be a better father and husband and let my family know how much they mean to me. My heart goes out to the Spielman family.

We are going through this right now. We began the season off very promising and just like everyone else's year we met adversity. There was a specific group that we relied on including our best and biggest player that quit one after the other. We have protected this kid (bad rumors) and nurtured this kid then he did not show up for a week. He came the Friday before the game and then did not show up Saturday for the bus. The following Monday he showed up for practice and I sent him home. Told him to come back tomorrow, he never came back!
All of the boys are still friends with these kids.... They eat lunch with one another still buddy it up. Unbelievable.

Superpower very well said I, Could not agree more, we have the same philosophy. I am returning our whole program minus 4 seniors. Last year was my first as HC, the first thing I did was install a lifting program. We are really seeing the difference, the way they walk, talk and carry themselves in the hallway and around town. They are finally proud of being a member of this program

5085-PERFECT!!!!!! Success is execution based.
We have a team in this area that runs Split back Belly. They start in Pee-Wee's go undefeated. They run it in Juniors and Seniors, go undefeated. There HS program is always undefeated or almost there. They run 3 plays! When other coaches try to replicate it they can't. It is a site to see.

My rep called me and left a message this past week after I received a letter of the Bankruptcy case in my mailbox at school. Anyone else get one of these?
He said on the machine that he and some other reps had just signed on with another company and that there product would not change that much.
I did the Cards and the Cookie Dough this year. The cards went well the cookie dough was an absolute disaster.
This kid who worked for them seemed to be a god guy. I feel for all of those who are out of work now.
