I used to have a box on my call sheet called "Plays for ______" and the best player's name was there.

Special teams matter. Seconds matter. Kicking the ball into the EZ for a touchback took nothing off the clock. NFL kickers must be good enough to put the ball where they want to (baring terrible conditions). Kick it so the clock runs.

I am done coaching for now. I just finished my 22nd season coaching. So maybe I will be back someday. The 2021 season was hell on me and we went 12-1 winning the state championship my son's senior year. I can't think of a better way to retire. I am looking forward finding out about this life outside of football thing people talk about. very happy for you brotha I will be up at some point to visit Thanks Tog. The timing was right. Time to go.

Look...we aren't working in a coal mine. This crap is ridiculous. Suck it up. Get your a$$ to work, and do your job: ibb.co/n8y2XDxwe get paid $40 to cover another class so bring it on I have subbed almost every prep hour for the past 2 1/2 or three weeks to a similar amount of money. It adds up and I am appreciative of that. I know other places where that is not in the contract.

I really don't know where to start. I tell people I will never blame COVID for all the problems, but it sure as hell didn't help one gosh darn thing.

I liked the Character Matters Curriculum when I was a head coach. www.coachcharacter.com/But I also picked and chose, then adapted different things from other coaches and added in or substracted. I will also say though the best teacher of character is the coaches and their behavior and what they tolerate. I second this curriculum. We were one of the first schools to start with Wade as he was living in our city at the time. It's top notch stuff and he will even tell you it's set up to be a quick blast not some intensive program that takes a ton of time. Wade comes from a big time football family with several D1 coaches in his family. It's very user friendly and our kids got a lot from it. It's not raising other peoples kid or trying to convert them or create some cult like atmosphere. Lots of kids have no idea what the words mean that we use with them everyday. This curriculum gives them an idea what those words mean and how they effect their everyday lives. It really is good stuff. I know Brad and Tim, his brothers. I have never met Wade but spoken to him on the phone. Like you said it is set up to a quick blast during a meeting. If I got back into a position where I could use it, I would.

...and as much as I do enjoy a good "character curriculum" I am also very skeptical of these products because it seems sometimes like every couple months somebody new joins the clinic/video circuit with character and culture products so they can make a buck.

Why do football coaches in particular among coaches feel like they need to raise other people's kids? I know, I know- no one else is doing it, you're uniquely qualified to do it, they need it to play a made up game, society, poverty, yada yada yada... Could get deep into psychology stuff here but a lot of teachers and coaches probably fall into the "rescuer" catagory on the drama triangle. (Rescuer, victim, persecutor). I have said it before, and I will say it again. The best thing you can doto teach character is to be a good man and walk the walk with them. Huddle them in on the green grass (or turf) and tell them a story. Do that. Then if you have time (or make time) in meetings do something else. This year as a position coach I used the first 2-5 minutes of my DB meetings to show a video. For example I showed the Ernie Johnson video when he was talking to Alabama Football.

Hudl playbook is "free" so to speak as part of the package. But if I wanted to branch out and use something else is it worth it? Just Play Solutions makes some nice drawings and has some nice features but at $20 month for a basic subscription that's $240+ a year depending on the features and what you use it for. Trying to decide if that is worth it. What are others opinions?

One of the things I think coaches have to learn is every bunch of players is different. Just because the guys last year were around a bunch of good leaders the year before doesn't mean jack. It really doesn't. Every year you have to be able to pick and choose what your team needs. I had a group of guys a decade ago who didn't need coaches to lead. I mean they handled everything. There were no issues. Everyone got a long....and they won. The following year after they left I figured "oh they showed next year's seniors how to...." NOPE. Then a couple years later with a totally different crew we went to state, and it was the hardest year ever. Theese guys did not get along. We tried everything. The best thing for them was they understood that if they could get along for a couple hours a day Monday - Friday they could win a lot of games. But there was nothing we could have done to fix that locker room. Winning kept those guys together. So there was nothing in the culture handbook that the first group needed to hear from us. There was nothing in the culture handbook the last group I mentioned would have listened to.
Now here is one thing I think did help once. Following that great W/L season which was a ***** to handle personality wise, I began assigning lockers. I didn't let the guys be cliquy in the locker room. I broke up the classes. I also put leaders by guys who needed leaders by them. I put two of our biggest pricks by the door to the locker room so they could monitor who was coming in late and remind guys to get their butts out to practice. Stuff like that. I do think that helped.
Ultimately you can't out culture police their parents. If their parents are on board then you have an easier time. If the parents have a bad culture (or if the wrong parents have a bad culture) than....well good luck.

One of the best culture resources out there is a book called "Make The Big Time Where You Are" by Frosty Westering. It's out of print but still available for about 50-60 bucks. There's a couple of youtube videos of Coach Westering giving a clinic on his ideas as well. That is a good book.

We don't need to bash guys on the board. I agree with the statement above, that you take what is useful and discard the rest.

Minnesota MSHSL is all public and private schools. No multiplier. Several private and public schools do opt up in football and hockey. In football we have 6 classes plus 9-man. This year one private school (smallest 11 man class) won a title. The rest were all public schools.

Earlier this season we played a team who consistently had 6 on the LOS the official would not throw a flag. He said there is no rule in football, and never was (those are his words) that say the offense has to have a certain number on the LOS. He threatened to throw a flag on me if I complained again. At halftime I talked to the white hat who said he would straiten out his crew.

I read a successful HS coach say that the real essence of coaching is finding talent and getting it on the field. Thoughts on that?

Do I have to bring in the team and staff on a Saturday after the Friday night game? Is it mandatory to be successful to bring everyone in after the game the next day? I think in large part it depends where you are. I have been a part of programs that did bring players in, and programs that did not. All that being said I would not bring players in anymore. With Hudl you can accomplish a lot without bringing everyone in extra. I also find coaching staff meeting most productive on Sunday after everyone has had a chance to watch films. There are some exceptions to not coming in on Saturday. In my state the first round of the playoffs if you don't have a bye is Tuesday (after a Wednesday game). We typically go Friday-Saturday when that is the case. Coaches will work Thursday though.

Can you use Zoom or Google Meet?
Can you use a larger space like a gym or auditorium and spread out?
Could you do some team building on the field?

My experience is if you want something with nubs go Boombah. They make a good tough shoe and it is cheap. If you need a better insole get some more expensive ones and throw those in.

Last I heard and read ND and SD are having fall sports seasons on time. An AD I have known over the years out there says there is no talk of shutting down or delaying. So.....everyone pack your bags for the Dakotas!
