This last year I made it a point for my OL guys to have pride in what they did. So we changed our name from the generic "hogs" to the "Oxen" our team was called the Lumberjacks, so we played off of that. I told my boys that the oxen were always in front of the wagon leading the charge. Made up little traditions for only the OL, Lead Oxen Award, Oxen Rules, etc. I didn't even get into half of what I wanted to, but last year was the first year and they needed to buy into it themselves before I overwhelmed them.
I found that little traditions that are soley for the OL help them feel special within the team.

When I was playing college ball we had a team down by 10 with about a minute left. All we had to do was get a first down and the game was over. So on 3rd and 2 we run a outside stretch. All I remember was getting the first down and then seeing the other team laughing. I couldn't believe it, we had just put the nail in the coffin and they think it's funny. Well turns out on the tackle, our RB's pants ripped on the back and all you could see was a big white ass. The best thing about it was the RB tried to leave the game and went to our header to explain the situation. Only problem was we were so depleted by injuries he was our last RB. Coach told him I don't have anybody else. So for what I can imagine the longest minute of the RB life he has to be on the field in front of the whole crowd bare assed. Just Classic, especially if you knew the kid.

Had a question for you guys. When you are installing plays in camp, do you put in an entire series first, or the base plays of the series you are going to run. We will run two series, belly and power/trap. Would it be better to put in Belly/Belly option and then Trap/power, or the belly sereis and then the power series?

Had a coach get popcorn from the concessions during a game and eat it on the sideline. Also had a center go down once and the back up fumbled the snap seven times. Lost them all.

Triton ran the flexbone last year. I don't recall seeing them run a lot of option ala Navy. But they did run a ton of counters out of it.

I heard through the grapevine that you guys would know something about the T formation offense. My question to you is do you know of a good book that I should get my hands on. Really like the offense and with everyone in the world going to spread, I'd sure like to throw a wrench at our opponents and get back to smashmouth football.
Thanks

Stalling, or "Clock Management" can be a huge advantage to a team. A couple of years back we played the #1 team in our section and eventual state qualifier. We were a 1st year wing T team that finished 3-6. We decided that we were going to sllloooowwww the game down and control the pace of the game. It seemed to work really well, we lost but it was only 21-12 against a team averaging in the 30's. We had a coach on the sideline with a stopwatch and he would keep track of the play clock and we would send the play in at the 10 second mark.
I don't see this as cheating because you are given this much time, we just decided to use it all.

Coach,
We used a relaxation script along with a visualization script from a book. I think it really helped our kids learn how to have the proper focus before a game. Kids loved it!! The book is a great resource and I reccommend it to any coach. It's called "Sport Slump Busting" by Alan Goldberg.

Just thougth of another one. During a JV game I was watching in the stands and I heard a player's dad say this: "It's {censored}, they run the same ten plays all year. They use the same formations too!" I wanted to go over there and say, "It's called an OFFENSE, this is the one we use."

We were playing a home game and I was in the booth with the DC. The team we were playing runs a real nice split back veer and has won a couple of state championships in the previous decade. Inside veer was killing us. All of a sudden a guy opens the door to the booth and walks in. I think I was in shock. He walked over to the DC and began to tell him that "You need to put a nose guard over the center, because that QB's stance is so low that if the nose hits the center hard enough, the QB will fall over." He then walked out. I asked the DC who the hell that guy was.
Who was it?
That's right you guessed it.
Our brand new Superintendent.
Three cheers for micromanaging!

Loch, We had a sophmore coach who would stand by me and as soon as the whistle blew to start the play clock he hit the stop watch. We either ran in the play or signaled it in right away. The quaterback would read the play and then look to the sidelines. We would give him a thumbs up with about 12 to 15 seconds left and he called it. We practiced that during the week. Main points that we had problems with was the quaterback not looking to the sidelines and us coaches screaming to get his attention to run the play. We didn't have any delay of games but I think I lost a year of my life due to all the screaming.

Coach,
My suggestion is to slow the pace of the game down. Use a stopwatch to time the play clock and try to snap the ball with 5 seconds left. We used this against the number one seed in the section and they were better than us and more physical. They beat a team 47-17 that we lost to 44-15. They scored with 3 minutes left to beat us 21-12.
I feel the longer a underdog team hangs around, the more confidence it gets and the more they start to think "hey we can beat these guys"
Good luck
