i know this is going to sound mean but I like to see a ground pound team pass. it usually pads our sack and int total. I mean you wever see a double wing team pass the ball. seriously, I should bring my remington model 870 and do duck hunting.
I like forcing running teams to pass. stack the box with 9 and play man to man.
we ran the wishbone in h.s. the wr were essentially no factors. they ran the plays in. our coach uses to put kids who were like the bankers son or some big wigs kid at wr. we never threw unless we had to.
Air, talk to Knighter, his kids pass the ball very well. I know that larry harrisons boys threw the ball very well the last couple of years too. I maintain that not having to and not WANTING TO doesnt mean YOU CANT throw the ball. Just like some teams that dont want to run, or dont have to run...still can run. Its FUN to take the ball and run for 500 yards in a game and throw 0 passes. I like it anyhow. Now, if all of my playmakers were recievers then Id probably think it was FUN and EFFECTIVE to throw the ball. one thing I really love about the dw is that the wings are not only the primary runners but also the primary recievers!.
Yknow, Wayne Ellington, the basketball player on UNC, ..he was in my PE classes and I REALLY THOUGHT for the first time that I had a kid coming out for football that I could just throw the ball up to over and over again and wed score 40 ppg. I havent had many of those kinds of kids over the years and with two coaches havent developed many either.
I wonder if many of the older coaches here are more "run oriented" while some of the younger guys tend to be more "lets heave it up " ...would be interesting.
i do not know how many times I have heard just what you have said as it relates to a kid. run coaches are always waiting for that great passer/skill player to come along before they even think of throwing the ball.
Passing coaches understand that throwing the ball is a skill and can be developed through reps. it is no different then drive blocking. catching the ball is a skill as well. skill players are developed. sure it is nice to have speed but it is not nessary.
another thing which I think in key to throwing the ball is your qb and wr have to play catch every day. you cannot develop a passing attack with 2 practice days a week. just not gonig to happen. you can develop a running game in that time.
I would not call myself young guy, I am fastly approaching 40, the months are counting down. I think you coach what you know and uaually that is what you did.
I know several guys I want to college with and all they do is run the wishbone. I could run the wishbone backwards and forwards. I know how to teach the qb how to ride and decide. I just vowed never to run it when in college we got down in the first half big in a playoff game and we were down cause we had no way to move the ball through the air.
you and I are alike but different. I do nto want to run the ball unless the numbers are so in my favor that I know we are going to come up big. you only want to throw if there is a chance of completing the pass for big yards.
similar though process just different methods.
