We had an exceptional running back and hybrid OLB/SS this last season. He finished up with all-state honors this season and last season and is certainly athletic enough to play NAIA, D2 or D3 ball. He had recruiters knocking on the doors last year but he told them he didn't have any interest in playing college ball. He had a change of heart after this season and is looking to play somewhere. However, he hasn't had anyone knocking on his door this year so we're laying the ground work his recruiting. I've never run into a situation like this and am wondering how much his lack of interest last year is going to impact him.

They are all on 2020's right now. They were on 2019's at this time last year. Not a single school at that level had a 2020 recruit board in their offices last year at any time. They'll start working on 2021's after and only after the 2020 class is signed sealed and delivered. The only people working ahead and who would be impacted by him saying nah no thanks last year would be FBS and some FCS's you said he's not at that level. His recruitment has not been impacted at all. Get out there get his tape out there and happy hunting!

He's good enough to pick up a full ride at an NAIA or D2 school but he has some specific schools in mind. I wish he and his folks had a little more forethought last year (this is my first year in the program) as he would've landed some good offers at those schools last year. I'm not so sure about this year; both programs had solid seasons and already scooped up some good in-state recruits.

I will respectfully disagree, in a state filled with D3 schools, I can tell you for a fact that most of them were talking to Juniors last year, and are still talking to them as seniors this year. They are talking to this years juniors as my kid is a Junior... They recruit just like the big boys do, at least the good ones do.

I just spent 6 days in early December at 6 different recruiting fairs pushing our guys to schools. To a man every D2, NAIA, D3 guy that I talked to and I said something about any 2021 said, "coach we are just on 2020's right now." This includes 5 teams that were in the D3 playoffs and 2 teams that won playoff games 1 of which is going to play for the whole damn thing. Additionally I spent 2 years coaching at a nationally competitive D3 and we were never ever working ahead. The class wouldn't get finished up till April of that year and then we'd finally start to move onto the new year of kids in the summer before their senior year. I'm just telling you from my experience we could have gotten onto a kid as late as Christmas and we'd still recruit the dog piss out of him.

Never too late to get the kid recruited.
What I would do is sit down with the kid and get a hierarchy of schools put together. You’re there for the realism, he’s their for the want. Make a list of top 5 or 10 schools and hit them up IMMEDIATELY. Forget the highlight tape, get his name to the coaches now! Explain the talent and the reason for not being recruited in the past.
From there, start working through the other schools he’d be interested in and contact them. This requires a lot of leg work on both of your parts, but it can be done. Teams are never finished recruiting if there’s players that can help.

there are plenty of schools that have no roster limits and take on all comers. Any D3 Mac school (I played in it) FDU, Alvernia, Del Val, etc., they're all no max rosters so if the kid can play and is willing to pay for school and be eligible, they'll add him on

A different perspective--Does he really want to play college ball, or does he just want to be recruited right now because it is "recruiting season" and he wants to be "blessed to be offered by...." I mention this not to disparage him, but to point out that potential for him to make a bad choice of schools based on the idea of football. That might be something the coaching staff could help counsel him.

He had high hopes of playing college basketball but he wasn't looked at by any schools last year (he's only 5'8''). He's a pretty good basketball player but he doesn't have the genetics for the college level. So, he decided he wanted to play football.

I hope your not telling him he’s gonna get a full ride because those just don’t exist outside of D1 ball for purely football. Also I echo that D2 and D3 are all about 2020 right now they make take a name of an underclassman now but they are focused on building their classes this year. Also per all the coaches I talked at during our recruiting night just a few weeks ago.

He -might- pick up a full ride if he went to one of the struggling NAIA programs in this and the surrounding states. But, you're correct, he's not going to get one at one of the middle tier or upper level programs.

Even the NAIA it would be extremely rare to get a full ride. NAIA football programs get 24 full scholarships for the whole team. It is split up between freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and red shirt seniors. D2 is 36 total scholarships for the whole team. The only way he is probably getting a full ride is if he is playing in the FCS or FBS as they both have and 85 per team scholarship limit.
I do know that some small schools will really work hard with kids to get them a bunch of academic scholarships to make up for some of it. But that is if the player is a good student.

I'm saying strictly football full rides do not exist outside of D1 football. After that there are limits on how many scholarships a school can have but those do not all need to be fully funded. I believe it's around 32 for D2, lots of D2 in our area and they have recruited our kids in the past, some schools have all 32 funded others may have 8 and those can be split just about any way the schools want. So if a D2 really wants you, might be looking at 1/4 scholarship or even nothing. Now need based, academic, finical aid and all that can be factored in but you aren't getting a full football money ride outside of D1.
