Following an abysmal run as Arkansas's head hog, Chad Morris is now headed to the Plains as Gus Malzahn's Offensive Coordinator, which was vacated by Kenny Dillingham who is now at Florida State. This is a smart move by Auburn because, with Morris, he knows the Hurry-Up No-Huddle offense just as well as Gus going back to their time in the high school coaching ranks. Given what Morris has done at Clemson and SMU, he has the knowledge to make the passing game a deadly threat in the upcoming years.
My only issue is will Gus allow Chad to call plays and add some spice to a less than stellar version of the Spread Shotgun Wing-T? Or will Chad be alright with game prepping and being a QB Coach who will help Bo Nix develop into an elite signal-caller? I'm sure both of these cases along with the recruitment of Chad's son Chandler are weighing factors into this hiring. My main concern is developing Kodi Burns into an eventual Offensive Coordinator because as long as he's not being considered for a promotion, he'll just be another young coach who's working for his alma mater with nowhere else to go. Any comments?

Gus let Rhett Lashlee call the O for a while only retaking the reigns when the offense started to flutter. I think Morris will at some point be the actual playcaller, idk if he will start there but at some point next year he's going to be the one calling the plays.

Any comments? Not to detract because I think this is a great question, but do we remember when Gus' offense was considered one of the best in college ball, and not just a less "than stellar version of the wing-t?" Did Gus offense devolve, or have defenses just figured it out?

A combination of both, and the reason I say that because while other coaches who have adopted his philosophies have also add their own concepts, Gus hasn't done much to show he's improved. Take Rhett Lashlee who is thriving at SMU because he hooked up with an Air Raid disciple completing the offense making it a well beyond solid attack.
Gus has never developed a Quarterback on his own since arriving at Auburn. Jeremy Johnson is the perfect example for this topic. For whatever reason a two Quarterback system is against his religion, otherwise Malik Willis, and Joey Hardwood would still be on the Plains. A two Quarterback system isn't a problem if you know how to use them right. Urban Meyer won with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow back in '06 so it can be accomplished.
If you have a young Quarterback, your running attack should have every form of misdirection and play-action outlets possible to keep pressure off of him. The RPO concepts should be updated and because it's not, the offense isn't evolving like Jeff Scott's version of the Spread Shotgun Wing-T.

Malzahn's offense is awesome when the qb can and does run. Otherwise, not so much.
