In Connecticut the Thanksgiving day high school football games is what the entire football season is played around. We have TWO bye weeks and started the season the second week in September so that the Thanksgiving Day games could still be played. It is a point of contention currently in the state as the traditionalists want to keep them, and the non-traditionalists want to get rid of them.

The last Thanksgiving game in Louisville was in 1980. It was a tradition for the two oldest schools in the city and state to play, Louisville Male vs DuPont Manual. For awhile Playoffs ended before thanksgiving, then when playoffs were extended the tradition stopped.

Not sure how long it can last against the forces who want to scrap it to make room for another week of playoffs, but we still have a Thanksgiving Day game, complete with all the trimmings: a Wednesday night parade down Main St. complete with a bonfire, the band, cheerleaders, floats, and fire trucks from every town in the sending district; pre-game breakfast at the firehouse; and a full-house, SRO crowd. And, yes ... coincidentally or not ... both teams have grass fields. Hope we can hang onto it a little longer.

In CT, we play a 10 game regular season, and the last one is on Thanksgiving morning (some teams play on Wednesday night), so there's a full slate of games on Turkey Day. The playoffs don't even start until the following week.

No surprise, I guess, that the folks who have never had any tradition want to stamp it out.

In Mass it is a huge Tradition. Both Boston Latin vs Boston English, and Wellesley vs Needham have been played for over 100 years.

Crazy to think Needham and Wellesley just played their 132nd turkey day game. The 1st one was played in 1882!
