What's the best way to go about setting up visits to learn about what different college staffs do? In the past I've emailed coaches directly and gotten no response. I've done the clinic circuit and that's nice, buy I'd really like to get a chance to get some in depth time to learn the details, even if only from GAs.
Is it simply a matter of working your network? Is there a better person to reach out to than a coach directly?

I've had many coaches respond at small colleges. We go to a D2 college for team camp in the summer so we get the opportunity to talk to them.

I've had success when reaching out to coordinators or position coaches instead of the Head Coach. (They are usually inundated with requests and previous commitments) Find out when they are doing their spring practices and attend those and see if you can be in their position meetings with the players too. I've learned a lot just sitting in the back of those rooms too.

The best and most preferred method is to contact the high school relations coach. If there is not a high school relations coach then contact the secretary at the desired University and they should get you in contact with the appropriate person to schedule for a visit. Contacting coaches will result in no response due to the fact that they do not make that decision.

If you're looking at a big time school and they aren't recruiting one of your players, actively stop at your school when recruiting, or know someone on staff chances are it's gonna be tough. You usually need an in to get time at the big schools.
With that being said I have found 1AA/D2/D3/ are almost ecstatic to host high school coaches and are usually easier to get in touch with.

We have had great luck visiting DII coaching staffs. DI seems to be a different animal and is much more difficult to gain real access. The video coordinator at Nebraska might eventually be a great coach but I don't want to spend 4 hours with that guy.

Last year I found a new way to get LOTS of info that you’re looking for. The coordinator might be too busy to share details and spend time with you. BUT HIS GA ISNT! Those guys often know more than the position coaches. And they’re young and hungry, so they’re excited to share with you the inside info and details you want. I was pleasantly surprised TWICE with dealing with GA’s...

After all, they want access to your better prospects, so they are more than willing to be helpful (trying to 'out-do" each other).

Fcs hasn't been an issue, fbs is more of a hassle.

Young gun here - Do guys reach out via email? Phone? What's the best approach in your guy's experience? Some schools close some farther out of my range but not sure if they'd be as able to share info unless you visit in person...Scheme important of course but I'd love to reach out to schools more on process like gameplannig, scout, etc.

I’ve just called local D2/3 coach’s directly and talked to them, like I’ve said those guys are usually pretty happy someone wants to come visit and are usually down. Now D1 Power 5 often you get a secretary or a generic voicemail or some low level staffer in the football office and it’s harder to get through those layers unless you have a contact or direct line. Also don’t be surprised if you do get through and visit to find multiple other staffs jammed in a room with yourself. Now I’ve had some great experiences at major programs but was also at a school that they were actively recruiting players from. And I know there are many stories of guys having great experiences with getting into places as well but it’s not always easy at all. Now all the D2/3s have been awesome experiences as well sitting there all day with multiple coaches and getting anything you want from them. Sometimes guys, not you necessarily, get stars in their eyes and think lower level programs aren’t worth visiting when they end up missing out on a ton from those places.

Some times you can catch a rising star in the profession as well. We went and sat down with Brent Dearmon 2 years ago a few times when he was the HC at Bethel a little NAIA school in Tenn. He's now the OC at Kansas. Don't think becasue guys are at small schools they aren't as good as the big guys. You will find sometimes they may be better
