Does anyone on on offense or defense mix up who is coaching individual?
Yesterday our D-line coach had to go to the ER because of staff infection so I had our head coach (offense guy) jump in with the DBs, who I normally coach, and I bumped down with the defensive line. It was really fun. I work with everyone during group periods, but being in the individual period with them was a little more focused and intimate.
I am thinking about next year maybe finding a rotation with coaches to get involved with all groups to get to know the kids better. We do a 5-10 minute everyday drill period where we work block destruction, takeaways, and tackling where all coaches could coach any kid and it is basically the same skills. I know all of our coaches couldn't coach specific position stuff, but I really like the idea conceptually.
Anyone doing anything like this on offense or defense?

For an emergency situation such as yours, yes. Intentionally, NO!
I have a hard enough time keeping position coaches in their own lane as is. Otherwise I get my DB coach trying to tell the QB what to do, and the DL coach talking to the RBs. I don't need multiple voices trying to coach kids getting them confused.
Too many position coaches think they should be telling everyone else out there what to do as is, this just gives them justification in doing so.

There is nothing so terrible as coaching another coach's players. I used to work with a guy that said "I would rather you mess with my wife than my players." I think he was joking but it is definitely a problem in some players. I just love to coach football so mixing it up with the defensive line when I am usually with the DBs was a ton of fun. I could see some benefit to it, but your post may have made me do a 180 on the whole thing.

I know a staff where basically everyone coaches everyone. I think its a cluster, but to each.

I'm the Oline coach as well as the DB coach and defensive coordinator. If there was someone that we could trust with the Oline I would have passed the torch 20 years ago just to lighten up my load, especially with film on the weekends!
Can't complain because I feel being and Oline coach has made me a better DC. It's just a ton of work, almost like having two coordinator positions.
I'm actually curious if other areas of the country struggle to find good Oline coaches too?

You are a saint for carrying that load.

Although I usually coach line, this season and last I've made it a point the last 2 weeks of the season to work with the backs group instead, so I get that experience as well. HC's fine with it.

I saw it mentioned before but it would be a no from me as well. No matter how good your staff is at speaking the same language, something will get miscommunicated and the kids will hear conflicting things. If you want to try and get to know the kids more maybe do conditioning in stations, the DB coach does agility work, the DL coach does updowns, the LB coach does sprints etc. That way the coaches can get some face time with the kids but no real coaching/technique needs to be done.
