My school is requiring all students to do a 10k (6.2 miles) walk on the Friday morning of game day.
The walk starts at 8:00 AM and game time is 7:30 PM
We have a varsity team of 30 players (soph-senior) with 8 two-way starters.
Does anyone have experience on how this could effect athletes?

Surely your admin can get those kids out of that. I would assume the purpose of that would to make sure the students are healthy. They are getting plenty of exercise with football. I would approach it as a safety issue. That is TOO much exercise and could be dangerous to walk a 10k and then play a football game in the same week much less the same day.

The PARENTS can complain that will make the players more susceptible to injury on GAME NIGHT, & refuse to let their sons do the walk on THOSE grounds!

We lift on gamedays. Idk how walking 6 miles compares to three sets of front squats and power cleans. But a little physical activity on game days is good. I just don’t know if that’s too much or not.

What if the admin say they have to walk and sit out the game? I would be leery on asking parents to complain they might get too good at it next time they are upset with football.

Let the damned admin cancel the game, break the contract with the opponent (here they would have to PAY opponent for that), & sacrifice our game revenues (big bucks around HERE)! Our State High School League would NOT permit that (it would result in a FORFEIT, & the school being placed on probation). Parents could also SUE because that MAY prevent them from getting a College Scholarship. If I had TURDS like that on my admin I wouldn't be there in the FIRST PLACE. This is INSANE Bull Sh*t, & I have more important things to do than waste more time discussing it.!

Is this a school-organized activity and how is it organized? What's it for? A colleague and I actually looked into having students do an organized 5K during the school day, but we came up with the idea too late last year to get anywhere with it.

Our girls golf coach (granted...not football) told me this morning his team has to cancel a league match because the head coach (on campus teacher) has to attend a district wide professional development day!!!
He was told by our Principal that he can "send another coach in his place".
I don't mean to thread jack, but that is RIDICULOUS.
If it were me I'd take a "personal day" and be with my kids. {censored} that. And now I'm hearing the other HS in the district doesn't mind if their coach has a match that day and the coach can go. I swear. Admin is a such a {censored} job. Fight important battles. Not the ones that aren't a big deal.

On average, people can walk a mile in about 12-15 minutes. I suspect high school kids being told to walk, it may take closer to 18 minutes a mile. The school is going to devote 2 hours of the instructional day to walking 6 miles? Where is this taking place, the track? What type of resources and staff are they putting into this? Seems like you will need several water stations, training/first aid staff, course monitors, etc. Is this an awareness walk of some type? If it is for health, wouldn't smaller more frequent outings be better than a 6 mile walk once a week? This seems very ill-thought out and not sure what benefit is gained from it for the school, much less the athletes.
game day lifts are designed to activate the cns, wake up the system, so to speak. these are high-intensity, low volume routines. while the walk may be low intensity, 6 miles isn't low volume. It may not harm the athletes but it definitely doesn't appear to help them, in my mind. i would seek other options for athletes on game day to "raise awareness" or whatever purpose this serves.

Oh man I was at a school that would have a big whole school relay the Friday of homecoming. Not as bad as a 10k in regards to stamina, but there were a bunch of 'wacky' events that took place.
We would usually lose one kid each homecoming from this (often to the milk gallon chug). Had our stud D1 WR/CB one year get a bad case of the squirts from his event only to later load up on imodium which dehydrated him and led to massive cramping and him missing most of the game.
For a lot of people football just aint that important.

It was 99 degrees at kickoff Friday night and we played 200 feet from a river. It was over 95 every single day at practice last week. If we added in a 10k walk at anytime during the week while it was over 95 degrees and humid as heck in Alabama, last Friday night would have been pretty tough. So let me clarify. Hard practice all week in humid 95 degree plus weather, game at 99 degrees next to a river (dude, it was hard to breathe), and a 10k sometime that week in that same weather, that is too much.

The event was organized by administration to celebrate the school's anniversary while also supporting a local charity. There will be no classes. Students will be walking the 10k along the lake front in Chicago.

You need to get some vans and have them park like a mile or two away. Have all the football players wander away at that point, get in vans and drive them about a half mile from the finish for drop off. Make sure to mist them with a spry bottle before they exit the van.

Umm, not sure that it will impact the game. Could possibly help. I don’t think they will be worn out.
But requiring kids to do it on Friday is garbage anyway. We get one game per week. It’s on Fridays. Schedule crap like this any other day.

Love this topic......... last Friday, we had a senior fun day outside from 8am to 230. From 11-2, it was hot as hell. If it were a practice, our athletic trainer would have kicked us off the field. BUT all those seniors, including 16 of my football players, sat out there all day. They were beat by the end of the day.
If those were band kids, and they had a competition, those band kids would have been excused 100%. BUT my kids could not get out of it.
I am tired of asking for anything, bc nobody cares. I asked to get out of school 30 mins early on a friday for 2 hour trip down in Lexington and was denied. That next week, our band was let out at noon on a Friday to travel away for a Saturday competition.
a better topic would be......... 10,000 reasons why we hate the band.

Is there a set pace? Can't the kids just walk slow? I have a hard time thinking that walking six miles is going to be too exhausting for a high school kid who will have a game several hours later.

Yes, this is a private school.
It ended up being determined that athletes competing that day did not have to complete the walk. Football players assisted with clean up at the starting/check point.
All that work & discussion and the game ended up being moved to Saturday due to weather...

We do a pre-game lift. Don't think walking will hurt the kids. If the admin wants to have a battle over it, I don't think I would waste any political bullets on that hill. But I would ask if the football players can participate in a different way, like water stations, set up, or tear down of the event.

Me- "Hey Dr. SoandSo, we made the state finals next weekend and I will have to be out Friday to travel to the event." Principal- "Coach, you were out last Friday to go coach, do you really need to be off 2 Friday's in a row?" Me- "Yes, I am the head coach and have to be there to coach the team. It isn't like I'm just taking back to back Friday's off for no reason, we are in the state finals." Principal- "Well, next year I may not allow you to coach since it is causing you to miss multiple Friday's in a row. I don't understand why you can't allow somebody else to take the team. I am going to have to think about if I am going to approve you to be off, and if not and you go anyway, I will be forced to write you up and place it in your file." Me- "No wonder the athletics in this district are a laughing stock. Somebody takes a team to the state finals in their first year and are asked if they can let somebody else coach the team. IF you don't approve me to be off, I will not come, and you can just write me up. This is insane, you have teachers showing up to work 2 hours late every day, leaving to go get lunch off campus and staying gone for hours, and I'm the problem?" My AD at the time called her and she finally approved the day off. She got promoted to a district office job the next year.

But in all seriousness, usually the worst administrators get promoted. Ha
