vicvinegar The program I took over had limited numbers (a little over twenty) over the last few years. They've played three JV games in two years and we're paying for that now. Our varsity starters are walking into games with extremely limited "live experience" and it has been detrimental to them. I get spooky running a full JV schedule with 14 kids on that roster but they need to play some games. They get playing time and experience that they just wouldn't that other wise. It's a gamble when it comes to injuries but we're rolling the dice.

However in my state a player is allowed to play 6 quarters (it may be different for you). That makes it tough for a team with less than 25 players to play a JV schedule. So if you have 25-30 kids, I would do everything in my power to play a JV schedule. However, I would not cancel my Varsity schedule in order to play a JV schedule.

Wow... I'm a certainly glad have 8 quarters of ball to work with every week and no policy regarding written permission.. At the beginning of the year, our JV team had 20+ kids on it and none of the varsity kids played, period. Numbers have thinned out significantly as I removed two kids from the team, three quit because they didn't like the discipline policies and we lost two others to injuries. We had our last JV game last week and I breathed a huge sigh of relief as we had a tiny roster and we were playing kids that get varsity reps. No injuries and we actually won.

Okay... Seeing that you have 8 quarters to work with, that makes a lot more sense. Like I said, I believe JV is very important. I just would not allow my Varsity to suffer in order to benefit JV.

vicvinegarThe varsity player we have on the JV squad don't really benefit from playing at that level. It spooked the hell out of me because an injury to one of them could be detrimental on Friday night. With that being said, I was told shortly after I took this position that kids weren't going out for football because they weren't getting a any playing time. They love basketball around here and they get enough kids to field two c-squads, a JV and a varsity so I'm hoping to get the same numbers out for football. It's certainly a gamble that I don't like but I think our numbers will dip significantly next year if we don't get those younger guys playing time.

We just had a team in the area forfeit a game preemptively because 6 of the 23 or so kids are hurt. I think generally 17-18 is that cutoff.

I'm sitting here right now with 18 bodies on varsity. 29 on JV. And I have tried to bring up JV to play but either the kid or parents refuse to come up, and I cannot force them to come up. I have 2 Sophs on varsity right now, both are likely to start both ways and special teams. Maybe someone else covered this, I'll be honest I haven't read all of the responses. You are not the first Coach to make statements like this, but I'm always so confused by this. EVERY program that I know of in the state I coach in, there is a Varsity team. Then whoever doesn't play on Friday night, plays in the JV game. This goes for every program as far as I know. The only exception is with the large schools who have 90-100 kids, and only a few of them practice completely separate. For most of those programs, the JV kids are used as scout players. If a program only has 20 players, they cancel their JV schedule. You don't have 18 Varsity and 29 JV... You have 47 players. I realize that a most Freshmen & a handful of Sophomores may not be physically ready to play, however every program I have been involved in (good & bad) we have started Sophomores and occasionally a freshmen or two have seen playing time. If they don't want to play, see ya! In MI & I’m sure a few other states JV plays on Thur before the Fri Var game. Players are also allowed to only participate in one of the games.

Everywhere is a little different. The conferences I've been involved in around Central/Northern Indiana, we play JV & Freshmen on Saturdays. While in Southern Indiana, JV was Monday and Freshmen were Thursday. They were playing the opponent the Varsity had played the previous week though, not the way you described it.
